When you play a road player......

If big money guys are in the pool room but no one is playing the visiting player and you step up to play for $50 a game with a road player, and you win 4 games of one pocket in a row getting a spot. When he quits after four games and thanks you for the action, do you wonder if he is spreading a little corn around for $50 a game?

If he quits after losing 4 games in a row, how do you know if he wasn't laying down just a bit to bring the big larcenists in a little closer?

Would you adjust the spot the next time you play? I was wondering more about whether he was laying out a little corn, more so than adjusting the spot but anyway, chime in. Saw, you're invited too.

Maybe, maybe not. Time (and money) will tell. But your suspicions are well founded, and it sounds like finely honed survival instinct at work.
:D

Did you here any BEEP...BEEP...BEEP as if he was backing up?:D

Do you think he plays better then he did?

I have seen some "roadplayers" that can't hang with "shortstops".

I wouldn't think there are too many good players who are unknown to your area.

This happened to me a few years ago. A huge guy comes into the pool room and I am playing on the front "gambling" table. He asks if anyone would play a game of 8 ball for $20. There are several better players than me there but none of them step up. Nobody knows this guy from Adam, and I go, "Okay". He plays okay, but really not very good, and I beat him easily.

He goes lets play for $40. Im thinking whatever, sure, Ill play you for $40. Now all my friends, who mostly play better than me are there, watching. I think any time now this guy is going to come off stall and go.

He loses again, and you guessed it I think we play the next one for $50, loses again, and then plays for $100, and loses again.

He pays the final $100 with no issue, finishes the only beer he has ordered and walks out of the room to his car and leaves.

I guess folks like me are always waiting for the other shoe to drop and it just never dropped.

I never heard or seen they guy ever again. One of the strangest deals I had ever seen.

If someone steered the road player and he knows for sure that there are other players that bet high, may be he is laying down. On the other hand in times like today spending $200 just to test waters is a tough call.
If i happen to beat a road player 4 games in a row playing $50, next time i will be willing to adjust the spot if the bet remains the same.

Did he come back?

If yes; Then Yes to your question.
If no; Then No to your question.

Adjust the spot next time, if he asks. If he wins 4 straight, quit.

One of three possibilities...

1. He was chumming the waters playing you for $50 with a spot and dumping.
2. Setting the hook for an adjustment in wager with/without the spot (also dumping).
3. Was just playing straight up (no dump) and didn't like it.

Why did he pull up? He may have misjudged your speed (judging from a couple of streams I've seen, you play pretty sporty to be getting much of a spot) and decided he wasn't going to out run the nuts. He may have set the hook on someone else and will be back (having publicly lost to you giving a spot). He may have set the hook on you in the end, but is patient enough to come back at you on another day. You'll have to wait and see what happens next...does he take another run at you for the same money/spot? Does he suggest an adjustment? Or does he walk right past you and go to someone with more speed/deeper pockets? If you never see him again, I'd say he simply mis-judged you and saved himself some heartache.

Thing is, if you think you know, you can bet you really don't know. Like the old adage goes, if you can't spot the mark in the room, then you can be sure the mark is you!

I've seen this happen! Some guys just have more gamble than play. They think they have the nuts, can't believe their losing and start betting up thinking they'll get out; then they don't. I'll bet this guy lost some serious sleep over his session with you!

You can learn a lot from his motive by answering one question...Who's break was it when he quit?

I'm probably the mark, but I can live with it. :D

That's the tricky thing with pool players LOL. If you are backing a guy for $1,000 how do you know he did not call up the opponent and asked to split it before the match ;)

Well I had never have it happen to me before or since.

I really got nervous, not about the money or anything like that but this guy was big, very big. I thought he either wouldnt pay or go nuts.

This happened in my hometown and there was a friend of mine about my size but I knew I could count on if this guy went nuts, he nodded at me and I knew he was going to stick around to make sure.

Just really strange.

IMO , thee is far to much empahsis placed n hustling stalling, etc. NOt very often do these things even work out or really even worth the time.

Not a $50 player

It may be he's not a $50 player. Many times a better player loses for lower bets simply because its friendly action and they are not pumped with adrenaline. Contrast that to a local playing an unknown at the high end of their betting range. Often the top player has a higher gear but can't bring it for $50 so just shrugs off the loss. Later if he plays better people think he dumped. Not the case.

If he can't wake up for $50 1p, he's only clipping his own wings, IMO.

I know quite a few guys whose money runs deep and they got fast feet when the bet goes north of there against some unknown player

I was playing a outlaw biker once many years ago for $10 a rack 8 ball on a bar box in their club bar...got up about $150 and was REAL nervous. The guy just wouldn't quit and I didn't want to pull up winner that far ahead on his home turf with all his club buddies watching. Finally, he said "I just can't beat you, what are you drinking?" and bought me a beer. I bought a couple of rounds and breathed a big sigh of relief. I played there frequently, and one guy I played got knifed to death the next night for slapping another member's old lady in an arguement. I had way more balls than judgement back then...:o

You're correct. Most of the time it's not worth the effort unless you have a specific target in mind that is known to go off. If there's somebody in the room like that then it might me worth it.

Losing two hundred and not being sure to get it back these days with the nut of being on the road like it is, one has to be pretty sure of a score.

Joey, I think you just beat the guy, or one pocket is not his game ,and he's looking for a different game.

There was a friend of yours, about your size, you knew you could count on if this guy went nuts. He nodded at me, and I knew he was going to stick around to make sure.

Plenty of games have 10k, 20k, or more in the middle, with lots on the rail, and not a worry in the house. In addition, no friends with Goodfella like nods are around. (If you haven't seen Goodfella's, watch Henry's wedding scene again and look at all the nodding going on around the tables.

Now if Ken posts, you know there is going to be drama over a stranger and a $20 game. Ken's gotta have his $20 8-ball Tushhog around, cause that's how he rolls. Yall better recognize.

Were you able to escape with the cash without anyone getting hurt or any thumbs being broken? If so, that's good.

Well I had never have it happen to me before or since.

I would presume the guy is stalling.
