IMAGINE
1st March 2014
US Mosconi Captain is named as Mark Wilson. The xx year old from,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, is a two time Mosconi veteran and is currently engaged in a ground breaking project at Linderwood University which has already produced the country’s #1 collegiate billiards team. His reward is a two year contract to turn the US teams fortunes around
By the end of March he and Matchroom Sport will have assembled a 7 man squad from which will come the ultimate five players who will line up against the cream of the Europeans.
The 2014 Mosconi Cup finds a new home in the UK’s vacation resort of Blackpool.
After the shockingly poor performance in Las Vegas last year only Shane Van Boening seems certain to hold his place. The rest of the team are likely to be high on ability but short in experience.
Corey Deuel could face a recall and could be joined by Brandon Shuff and Mike Dechaine. Both have played before but Dechaine will first have to prove himself a team player. All these players are young enough to accept the team building concept that proved so difficult with the Old Guard.
But with Wilson’s facilities at his University base the squad will get together regularly and the Maine cueman’s committment will be tested there. Matchroom have agreed to support these ‘boot camps’ with the players flying in to join this new regime. But with a firm set of rules all players will have to Shape Up or Ship Out.
The most exciting thing about the venture will be the Teledyne Mosconi Cup Roadshow. The Silicon Valley based Teledyne are sponsoring this innovative move.
A squad beefed up by a couple more players will go on the road visiting New York, Los Angeles, Florida and other hotspots. Players in contention would be Oscar Dominguez, Jeremy Sosseil and Hunter Lombardo. Building for the future then Linderwood student Landon Shuffet could get a call up to the squad if not the team.
The plan is to face hometown teams in a Mosconi Cup format. This should see the likes of Robles, Strickland and Hernandez (New York) or Hall, Kennedy, Crosby and Sigel (out of Florida). But these matches will not be streamed. If you want to see them you will have to go to the live performance.
Team Teledyne USA will arrive in town early for a photocall and press conference. They will be visiting schools, hospitals and retirement communities spreading the pool gospel. They will play a condensed version of the actual format possibly only featuring four player teams. But these exciting encounters have been designed to engender the much needed team spirit so sadly lacking in recent years
This way the USA versus Europe finale will be the icing on the cake and the team will have acquired a whole new set of fans. In addition an outstanding performance by any of the Homeboys could lead to an invitation to join Wilson’s Warriors for the 2015 campaign.
Matchroom Chairman Barry Hearn said: This is a chance for the US pool community to get behind their players and create a fan base that will lift the spirits of the US Mosconi Cup team.
The Roadshow will bring star players into their midst and hopefully create greater awareness of the skills of their future heroes. But they will need to raise their game to stay in touch with the growing power of Europe and Mark Wilson is the man to do that job. Uncle Sam needs you boys
