US Mosconi Captain is named as Mark Wilson. The xx year old from,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, is a two time Mosconi veteran and is currently engaged in a ground breaking project at Linderwood University which has already produced the country’s #1 collegiate billiards team. His reward is a two year contract to turn the US teams fortunes around

By the end of March he and Matchroom Sport will have assembled a 7 man squad from which will come the ultimate five players who will line up against the cream of the Europeans.

The 2014 Mosconi Cup finds a new home in the UK’s vacation resort of Blackpool.

After the shockingly poor performance in Las Vegas last year only Shane Van Boening seems certain to hold his place. The rest of the team are likely to be high on ability but short in experience.

Corey Deuel could face a recall and could be joined by Brandon Shuff and Mike Dechaine. Both have played before but Dechaine will first have to prove himself a team player. All these players are young enough to accept the team building concept that proved so difficult with the Old Guard.

But with Wilson’s facilities at his University base the squad will get together regularly and the Maine cueman’s committment will be tested there. Matchroom have agreed to support these ‘boot camps’ with the players flying in to join this new regime. But with a firm set of rules all players will have to Shape Up or Ship Out.

The most exciting thing about the venture will be the Teledyne Mosconi Cup Roadshow. The Silicon Valley based Teledyne are sponsoring this innovative move.

A squad beefed up by a couple more players will go on the road visiting New York, Los Angeles, Florida and other hotspots. Players in contention would be Oscar Dominguez, Jeremy Sosseil and Hunter Lombardo. Building for the future then Linderwood student Landon Shuffet could get a call up to the squad if not the team.

The plan is to face hometown teams in a Mosconi Cup format. This should see the likes of Robles, Strickland and Hernandez (New York) or Hall, Kennedy, Crosby and Sigel (out of Florida). But these matches will not be streamed. If you want to see them you will have to go to the live performance.

Team Teledyne USA will arrive in town early for a photocall and press conference. They will be visiting schools, hospitals and retirement communities spreading the pool gospel. They will play a condensed version of the actual format possibly only featuring four player teams. But these exciting encounters have been designed to engender the much needed team spirit so sadly lacking in recent years

This way the USA versus Europe finale will be the icing on the cake and the team will have acquired a whole new set of fans. In addition an outstanding performance by any of the Homeboys could lead to an invitation to join Wilson’s Warriors for the 2015 campaign.

Matchroom Chairman Barry Hearn said: This is a chance for the US pool community to get behind their players and create a fan base that will lift the spirits of the US Mosconi Cup team.

The Roadshow will bring star players into their midst and hopefully create greater awareness of the skills of their future heroes. But they will need to raise their game to stay in touch with the growing power of Europe and Mark Wilson is the man to do that job. Uncle Sam needs you boys

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A FICTICIOUS PRESS RELEASE AND HAS NO CONNECTION OR HAS NOT BEEN AUTHORISED BY MATCHROOM. ALL NAMES AND OTHER INFORMATION ARE PURELY FOR ILLUSTRATIVE PURPOSES AND ARE THE IMAGINARY VISION OF THE AUTHOR.

Good selection. It is always good to dream. Sometimes they come true!

Pro9dg apparently got a fresh batch of cookies. ;)

Actually, you have some darn good ideas. If such a "tour" could be funded, it truly could make a difference in cementing a team atmosphere. Maybe us AZers could do a fund raiser for it and perhaps label it "The Cup Cement Fund". ;)

Whatever Barry and crew think tank and put out for the 2014 Cup, it's surely going to be interesting and innovative.

Please excuse me for asking, I'm sure it's been asked and answered before:
What is the actual process for picking the American team? Who actually decides?
Are the rules about who is eligible to participate, or is the general Mosconi Cup book available on line anywhere?

What's that Outback restaurant slogan?

"No rules, just right"?

This year Matchroom selected our 5 players based on god knows what (viewership, $ and sensationalism). Previous years, when BCA points meant something, they used them to automatically qualify 3 to 4 of our players. 3 years ago IIRC we got to vote (MVP Hatch) in with a voting system.

With the BCA points system meaning less and less, Matchroom had to go a different direction IMO.

Methinks you're on to something there (with the bolded part). According to Wikipedia:

"Concrete is a composite material composed of coarse granular material (the aggregate or filler) embedded in a hard matrix of material (the cement or binder) that fills the space among the aggregate particles and glues them together."

In this case, the "coarse granular material / aggregate particles" are the US players, and Mark Wilson is the "cement or binder."

And that's the problem with the US players -- they are indeed coarse, granular particles. Not a team at all. They need a binder to glue them together, someone like Mark.

Doug (pro9dg) is definitely on to something...

That would be a great choice ,, with a coach who would fly under the radar allowing him to concentrate solely on the teams devolopment

Thanks Mr PL glad you liked it. AZ people could help by selling the shows at a venue that is close to them and could help set up the PR machine. This would include identifying suitable schools, hospitals, radio and TV outlets, malls, clubs, old folks homes. Ticket sales would help fund the venture.
Or maybe Matchroom would give you a chance to become a team owner by offering shares in Team USA

Well, this is just a thought, but is at least part of the problem maybe a Euro picking the American team? In every other world sporting event a country selects a team based on their own criteria and sends that team. Just imagine if the host country got to select Team USA for the Olympics. I mean I'd love to play center on the Basketball team, but a 5'7" 240 lb starting center in the Olympics, I dunno....

Mr PL??!! Puhhlease! Red rep coming! ;)

Anyway, raising funds by having "a gate" at different venues seems to me to be worthy of consideration. Interesting idea, especially coming from a Brit!

I hope Matchroom selects and announces a US captain sooner than later which might allow opportunities like this to be enacted. Kool thinking ole chap!

Is pro9dg stealing your ideas, again?

Originality is only undetected plagarism

So maybe I should let an American take the credit. After all how could a Brit think of something that is beneficial to America and this is just a conspiracy to keep Europe on top

To be fair I just read Watchez's recent posts and he was pushing Mark's name big time.
Which just goes to show that great minds think alike. Happy New Year Watchez
and to Mrs KK9 and Mr PL

they cant be much worse, but it would be close

Great idea Doug. Send this to Matchroom Sports. :)

Mark Wilson could be a great asset to the USA Mosconi Cup Team.

Providing that the team had a complete reversal of thinking as to what the team needs to succeed. A grudging or reluctant acceptance of Mark's presence as a non-playing team captain won't be the best thing for the team.

The entire Mosconi Cup Team must realize the need and input of a coach that specializes in the mental game. This is where the USA team lags behind the European team and even then success is not determined by the end result. No one can guarantee results if winning is the result they are measuring.

I have previously proferred Landon Shuffett's name to the management of the Mosconi Cup as a team member but they feel that all "youth" would crumple under the pressure of the Mosconi Cup. That is an opinion that I respectfully disagree with but I am not part of that management team. The Mosconi Cup will continue to be spectacular event and hopefully we will see changes such as the ones you mentioned in the future.

One influential person ( who could influence Barry) from UK suggested that I should be the Captain of the Team USA. I am giggling while I am posting this since I don`t have the qualification.
