Mark Wilson as Mosconi Cup Captain - Announced

Congratulations to Mark! Fine choice indeed.

Now the question in my mind is, who will be the European coach?? Whoever it will be, has some canoes for shoes to fill. I mean would you like to be the act to follow the one that never lost a cup?

Can we start building a short-list? Alex Lely again perhaps on the list?

cheers,
Kimmo

Pretty sure that Darren Appleton said that they talked their same winning coach to stay one more year.

I just wonder if Team Euro's coach will be picking all five players just as Mark will be ?

Jerry...I'm willing to bet that very few of this year's USA team members will be returning. Shane, of course, will be a lock, both because of talent and attitude. The rest...we'll have to wait and see. I don't think you can pressure Mark at all. He is a total professional, and will approach the team selection from a professional viewpoint...not favoritism. Personally, I hope to see some of the younger players getting a chance to show their stuff...at least the ones that know how to behave on a world stage.

I would not want to be in Mark's shoes with every American pro knowing he can choose the team. I can give you a list of at least ten Americans who are personally convinced they belong on the team. I fear the pressure on him will be unrelenting.

But I agree he is a great choice.

I wonder if a hand picked team can be called a National team/Team USA. Standard procedure to pick a team or Athlete/gymnast/swimmer etc to represent USA is by holding the trials and whoever excells in those trials will have the honor of representing USA. Such procedures reflect fairness.

In the absence of such procedures in selecting a team, a law suit can be filed successfully and prevent the hand picked team playing in Mosconi cup under the name of Team USA.

Just curious if you made this exact same post last year when the team was hand-picked (by Matchroom)?

I'd say when the USA starts treating pool like a real sport, then they can hold pool to such standards. Until then, I'll be happy with whomever Mark picks to be on the team this year.

Last year I did not participate much in the forum and I was not much interested. However, I do remember posting on Facebook about the descrimination against Oscar Dominguez.
I am contemplating to bring a Law suit in the Federal court if a hand picked team is called Team USA.

Very well said, Scott. To be honest, with Mark's influence and tutelage, anybody will be able to learn how to behave on the world stage.

I agree that he'll be able to keep the politics out of the selection process and focus on setting the stage for future American teams. Speaking for myself, the more twenty-something players on the team next year, the merrier.

I am not against Mark. I have brotherly love towards Mark since we both are of the same Zodiac sign. I know Mark for 23 years but we did not have much contacts/communications. I even went to his place outside St.Louis once . what I am trying to do is good for pool and I believe it will raise the status of pool.

Just when I think I've heard it all...... just what are you attempting to do? Totally eliminate any chances of the USA ever being in the Mosconi Cup again? Do you realize that this is quite possibly our last chance to redeem ourselves, and here you are...threatening a lawsuit because you feel the team won't be picked fairly for an entertainment show. WOW!!!

Congratulations to Mark Wilson on his appointment as the US Teams team captain. He is a fine man and I'm sure he'll do a great job!

If nothing else, win or lose, I'm sure he'll pick players that will treat the other team with the dignity and respect they deserve.

I think he must be drunk...

There's no lawsuit here, unless Matchroom sports has some sort of rules or guidelines in place that states specifically how the teams must be chosen for a set number of years.

Not to mention, as far as I know, the event isn't sanctioned by any governing body, so there are no separate rules they have to abide by.
This is where some sports have gotten themselves into legal trouble. Not abiding by governing body rules.

And throw in the mix, that Matchroom is a foreign owned company. So even if you could find American legal precedence for suing over this, it would still have to pass European legal muster to amount to anything.

The amount of money that would take just to pursue, compared to what you would get out of it (zero), would be idiotic beyond belief.

Well said.

This would get laughed out of court so fast, and that's IF it even got to court (which it never would).

wow this thread went to stupidville pretty quick

For real. One poster, who I won't name (rhymes with Lagabond) just drifted onto my dummy radar,
so I know I can skim over their posts pretty reliably. It's actually a pretty short list.

Threatening a lawsuit over mosconi cup selection process,
that's more american than a bald eagle eating an apple pie.

This is not international competition via IOC gameplay... this is a private company, funding a private exhibition, and the guy paying for it makes the rules and calls the teams whatever he likes. In private events, anything goes, nobody has to qualify and if a team is to be called TEAM USA, TEAM AMERICA or TEAM FINGERBANGERS.... it's within the rights of the promoter. If you were to file a lawsuit, you'd not only have your suit thrown out, it be embarrassing for you and basically everyone.

keep an eye on DeChaine

I certainly hope that Mike will be on the team. Top 10 in each of the Ultimate 10-ball, Derby City 9-ball, US Open 9-ball and US Open 10 ball, as well as the number one player on the Joss tour. Mike is In his mid twenties and Has shown more consistent excellence than any America not named Shane. Mark Wilson would be a really good influence on Mike, who wil likely be counted among the most elite American pool players for another decade or longer.

.... And from a fan's standpoint, a Dechaine vs Shaw match Inthe Mosconi Cup would be almost too good to be true. I really believe that this is pool's greatest rivalry right now.
