Mark Wilson as Mosconi Cup Captain - Announced

I agree with both your observations. :)

Having the coach pick the team is a new strategy for the Mosconi Cup process. I wonder if the next Team USA will be representative of the so-called "professional pool player" in America.

I am sure some of the good old guys will be ditched, but at least it will be a team consisting of "professional behaving pool players".

And thats a huge improvement.

I haven't discarded anyone. I just don't like the way some of them have acted and I refuse to support that attitude. I would love to see the same 5 guys play again if everyone...including the audience....has a better attitude.

Just because I support the new change doesn't mean I don't care about or respect the past Mosconi cup players.

I never singled you out, but there is a general attitude by the majority on this forum that feels American pro players are scum of the Earth. And that's okay. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, likes and dislikes.

I also never said I did not support a new change, either.

I'm sure most of them will be hand-picked by the teacher.

Hey, Watchez is the Teacher and although I would love to pick the team, I have nothing to do with selection of players.

I never singled you out,

I know, that's why I asked who was calling them bums. It seemed to me that you were referring to someone in particular. I just wanted to clarify how I felt about the past players. Anyone that has dedicated that much effort to reaching the elite level of play has my respect.

I can respect someone and not agree with them at the same time.

time for the USA TEAM to "get lucky" - it's only a matter of time

'The Game is the Teacher' - I'm excited to see how the teams will be picked, several of us are looking for an excuse to start dedicating some time if there's an "upside".

Tell Keith to "get in stroke"......it's time for the USA TEAM to "get lucky". ;)

It could be something as simple as coordinating groups around pre-scheduled events.

I look forward to seeing what Mark Wilson's got planned. They could set up Mosconi cup trials and training just before big pool events. Train during the day and at night promote pool at the local rooms with Exhibitions & cheap challenge matches. Might generate a following for the Mosconi cup team hopefuls and more spectator interest in the tournaments as well. WIN-WIN

I know it was one of the Big Las Vegas Secrets but I can't keep it in any longer.

I am going to be Stick Boy 2014.

I will have to see if someone will do a Donation Thread for me for traveling expenses.

When I play pool, I am usually the designated Rack Boy so this shouldn't be much harder.

The fact that the new captain will pick his team will be most interesting, and probably most welcome. When the players are announced, it should make for at least one or two good threads.

I bet that the new Cap will start the training season off a little early. I think that things will be a tad different from other years.

they have that TradeMarked and could sue anyone for using that phrase

Everyone knows lawyers are "the scum of the earth". ;) I think they have that TradeMarked and could sue anyone for using that phrase to describe any other profession.

People are always just people...there's "good and bad" in any profession, this includes doctors, lawyers, teachers, firemen, policemen, carpenters, proprietors, etc.

It's all about their intention, this creates their character, which conforms their identity.

Congrats to Mark! ...and now waiting for the Canucks announcement?

I'm not sure that there is a more qualified person to transition the US team from individual players to TEAM Players. Mark has had time to develop his "coaching" tools for building a team. He also is a former player when everything was an individual sport.

Now, when will the announcement come about adding Canucks and maybe Mexican players as North American Team. BTW, if this does happen, how do we us the flag symbols that are always present for this challenge? Maybe the NAFTA flag…

Hopefully there will be some transparency to the process along the way. Such as here is a set of certain tournaments all prospective candidates need to play in order for their results to be compared side by side.

I believe Matchroom made the right call choosing Mark Wilson. I hope he sticks to his guns. I don't want to see many of the players that were on the team for the last dozen years. The cup needs new American blood. I could care less if we win the first year or second. I just want to see players that are proud to be there to play for their country. Johnnyt

Things are looking up for the US team with Mark as the Captain. I can't think of anyone who would be a better selection for the team.

In case you aren't Facebook friends with Mark ---

Mark Wilson I have been busy this morning and driving to Lindenwood University when my phone exploded. I could not be more excited and enthusiastic. Plans are underway to reclaim the Mosconi Cup. Thank you everyone for all of the support as it means so much to me. This appointment is not about me but rather a chance for me to give something back to the American pool world. I anticipate being without a lot of sleep for the next 10 months and I am completely great with that... Much like John F. Kennedy said, I think, "ask not what pool can do for you, ask what you can do for pool" and here we go, see you at the Derby.

Mark Wilson This morning during an hour drive to work my phone went crazy making noises, because it was so odd and I was driving in heavy traffic I did not pay it any attention, preferring to fix it when I arrived. Unbeknownst to me my friends and family were sending congratulations. When I discovered that my dream had come true, becoming the U.S. Mosconi Cup captain, I was then hit with excitement, enthusiasm, and nerves.

I am deeply touched by all of the praise, sincerely, and I will give my very best effort for all of us. I will not be getting a great deal of sleep for the next 10 months, and I am ready for that, because we are going to have the finest U.S. Team ever. The players that represent you, the billiards community, will also feel just as ambitious, and you will be proud of them.

Anything really worth doing is difficult and I welcome this opportunity.

No doubt I will have critics and second guessers which comes with the territory, but this is not about me, it is about winning and we are playing for keeps.

I also will try and keep everyone in the loop regarding the preparations and training, plus this stands to be great fun for everyone.

Thank you everybody I will not let you down.
Mark Wilson
