beta blockers/Propranolol & pool

ACtually CCB's may be better in this role...

CCB's or Calcium channel blockers help to prevent contraction of smooth muscle cells and help reduce heart rate.

In anxious situations like would be found playing high pressure pool, it could be the induced contraction of smooth muscle cells that prevents normal play from occurring.

So it is conceivable that CCB's like Amlodipine besylate, may be better suited to preventing poorer play in anxiety ridden performance conditions than beta blockers would.

I have COPD for 10 years or more. I've taken Lopressor 50 mg BID for about 7 years. I might have to take a half or 1/4 of one about twice a week on average since I lost 45 lbs. I have never had any trouble breathing as a side effect to this drug with my COPD, nor have I ever heard of any other patient with COPD have a reaction because of it. I'm sure you had problems breathing, but think you were told something wrong. All this being said, Lopressor is a very nasty drug with a lot of other side effects. You have to monitor yourself carefully when on it. JT

Bisoprolol

Diltiazem

Crestor

Plavix

Zetia

2 asprin

Not to mention Nexium, and a few others like Flaxseed, Iron, and whatever else my wife mixes in there.

Been on these things for 14 years, felt like shit 14 years ago and still feel like shit. How much does feeling like shit help our game?

Are you suppose to take asprin with Plavix? JT

Psychologist here.

I would not recommend taking anti-anxiety meds for something like pool tourneys. Better, cheaper, and longer-lasting is to get over anxiety by playing in competition a lot and getting used to it.

Yeah, cardiologist prescribed so ... I have a 100% blockage in my RCA, he said if it was 99% I'd be going for a bypass ( already have 2 stents in my LCA) but he said, since it's 100% and you're still breathing ... the small tributary capillaries are supplying enough blood around the blockage. I'm in there all the time for stress mibis, echos, and all kinds of money sucking tests.

I further thin out my blood with scotch whiskey:thumbup:

I can tell you from experience, if you have even have mild COPD, beware. My cardiologist mistakenly prescripted a beta blocker for me, I started them on a Sat. and spend all day Sun in the ER, couldn't breath had to have Oxygen until the beta blockers wore off.

My mother was given a single shot of sotalol (another beta blocker) during a pacemaker procedure and her breathing stopped completely. Thankfully, she was on the operating table at the time, so they did an emergency intubation and got her on a respirator. If she was at home she would have died. The doc said he never heard of that happening, but he said no more sotalol for her... ever.

you just need a colonic....or 8 of them.

The gut brain connection is strong. It is easy to see the connection when you are extremely upset to the point that it makes you sick to your stomach but people don't realize that the junk they eat that effects their digestive system has an connected effect on their brain.

The gut brain connection. A few colonics will start thee healing if one prefers and then a
Vegan diet for the cure. I dont need the drugs the diet is all I need.

Years ago there was a thread called poppin pills and playin pool. Was a really good read. Think it may have been deleted or locked

I have tried low dose (10 mg) of propranolol for playing under pressure. It is effective at taking the edge off as your body and heart will not react as much to adrenaline. The effect is probably half placebo and half real. I consulted with a pharmacist I know and he said low dosage is perfectly safe for a healthy person.

I was on a beta blocker for about a month a decade or so ago while waiting for a heart proceedure. I found the drug calmed me down to play my steadiest pool. My steadiest pool was not impressive at the time.

If you need a beta blocker to stay alive then what choice is there? If you're looking for an edge in pool then I think practice will be more effective than any gimmick.

I think caffeine is much more powerful that low dose beta blocker (I'm not talking about larger doses used by heart patients, which I would not advise). Many people drink coffee when tired. Sometimes I use beta blocker when I feel more jittery that normal. Some people's brains and genetics are more wired to respond to adrenaline. Those people can go to a doctor and get beta blockers for performance issues. Some people use alcohol in the same way.

Beta blockers do not have to be used as a long term solution. You can use them temporarily to help you build confidence. Kind of like antidepressants to get yourself back on track.

Wait a second. Caffeine is a stimulant. Beta blockers reduce heart rate. They have opposite effects. What do you mean caffeine is more powerful than beta blockers?

And anti-depressants are definitely not useful as temporary confidence boosters.

I take a beta blocker (timolol) for my glaucoma, three times a day in each eye. Although the dosage is low, it goes directly into the bloodstream instead of going through the gut, so the my eye doc was concerned that my heart rate might drop dangerously low (bradycardia) because my natural heart rate was low to begin with (60 bpm). No problems so far.

My total daily dose is only about 3 mg equivalent, but there is a half-life to drugs, so the total amount in my blood at any given time may be higher than a single 10 mg dose. So far I haven't noticed any calming effect, but I'm already a pretty laid back dude. Kinda late to have a placebo effect on me since I've been on the same dosage for years, but it might be possible that adrenaline is not having the same effect on my heart rate as it used to before the drops began. I haven't had to speak in public since I started taking them, but the last time I gave a speech I broke out in hives so bad I looked deformed.

It's an analogy. They are all drugs.

My point is that people use drugs all the time for useful things in life. Just because its prescription doesn't mean its more or less powerful that legal options such as alcohol or caffeine. I suspect most of the people hating on drugs have used some sort of drug in their life. Coffee and alcohol being the most legal and socially acceptable.

This is true physically, mentally and even emotionally.

The best way to improve your game, your life and your mental attitude is to CLEANSE.....it's not about "adding to," it's about "being willing to give some things up". This is true physically, mentally and even emotionally.

Liver/Gall Bladder cleanses are essential for good health and a sense of well being. Drugs may help temporarily with "things," but one thing's for sure, they will let you down when you need them the most......good health will not let anyone down, on the contrary, it will build you up at the right time, in the best place, in the ideal way.
