Pool - Reality TV - Starts Now

Assuming that drama seems to be the big seller these days, pool drama may be a hit. League pool seems to have plenty of drama queens all more concerned about handicaps and sandbaggers than anything else. I am going to give this show a chance.. Maybe they could squeeze Rhea in somewhere... LOL!

I was at Pool Sharks last night when the Ladies were there.
It was a little to silly for me, the only match that was played was a scotch doubles match.
Al Lawrence (SW cues) & Joe Cannella (Co-Owner of Pool Sharks)

VS.

Rebecca Wagner & Katie Moore (getting the wild 8, the breaks & 9/5 on the cash)

Just before the match started the Lady producer informed Al & Joe that the Girl players are going to win!!!! So a couple scratches/rattled 8 balls and the girls win
Joe goes to the corner of the table and give the camera the "Money" shot (throwing down about $3K in 100 bills) and Viloa we have a show.

I don't know Katie but have seen Rebecca play, she's got serious talent. Do you have the names of all the players currently associated with this project?

If anyone's in the Vegas area stop by and sweat the filming from 11:00-9:00 today and tomorrow. They will be at Best Billiards, Pool Sharks, and Rum Runners. They would probably like pool enthusiasts around.

The Players:
Rachael Abbink
Ming Ng
Jessica Barnes
Rebecca Wagner
Allison Fischer - NYC
And one other I forgot from Cali. I think

is Melinda/OMGWTF part of this?
&
are yáll going to be filming in late JUL when everyone's there?

When will producers learn that failure can be as big of a draw in ratings as success. Having a phoney victory will be transparent, but to watch people who want to be the best but fail is genuine and addictive. Watching the drama unfold as they run out of gas money is natural and real.

Absolutely correct.

I'll try and offer an answer to your question: the good ones already know.

When pool attracts the most talented "producers" it will also attract the type of financial backing required to get to the "big stage". Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen until pool itself, both participants and audience, attract a more mainstream and middle-class following, which hasn't/isn't happening. IMO.

I was never a huge fan of reality shows, and I do realize that they all have to have some sort of push or scheduling to get events rolling (log counts in ax men, or season crab money in deadliest catch) but those shows made their ratings by showing the falls and broken legs, or when the captain died of lung cancer (I even watched a few shows around that time). And the ratings were huge and they've each had multiple seasons, so it wasn't just me who was fascinated by the downfalls of real life.

The worst reality tv is when it is entirely event scripted, and just because the dialogue isn't, they can still call it reality tv. Those are so transparent, they rarely last, unless you have some train wreck like the kardashians or paris hilton. But everyone knows how they got their fame, it was a different kind of reality video. :p

Don't watch any reality TV but I will give this one a chance. Heard if u DVR a show they still get credits in the ratings. All of Az should DVR this even if u just delete it.

Yes you are right. I have my dvr set to record anything billiards related. Definitely record the show when it's on. I'm pretty sure this will be more accurate (the more widespread dvr gets) than the Nielsen ratings in judging whether or not tv shows get picked up or not. But they do look at the numbers already, that's for sure.

Barely a mention of this project on the internet. They are hoping to sell this to some cable network?

Ming is stealing...

I agree Kid. There was a time a few years back that I would have watched this without question, but now. eeehh whatever...

Sure it's all scripted to a point, but as to what extent is how genuine it will be. They can line up a guy to bring in a civil war era hand gun to pawn stars, and make sure the cameras are rolling, they will even tell the pawn stars shop this guy is coming. But they won't say "the producer wants you to turn this guy down". So the reality is will they won't they buy the gun.

Or having the cameras roll on a crab fishing boat, and if the crane cable breaks and a steel trap crushes a deck hands leg. It's the unpredictable that gets the ratings. The producer would be a nut to try to edit that outcome out.

Having two female pool sharks get into a money game and then announce they will win, and the two guys they play throw the game and ham it up for the camera will just be transparent. That's entirely scripted, and won't last long. I personally would love to see an unknown come in and wipe the table with them, and see how they react. would they practice harder? Make excuses?

Isn't that why we go watch pool tournaments? It's the unknown outcome that's fascinating.

I agree total unscriptedness is always better. However, Pawn Stars is a lot more scripted than you think. With Storage Wars, Dave Hester got kicked off the show because he couldn't hack how they were staging lockers and setting up the bids.

In today's time... if it's on TV, there's a format/script. Even those cop shows.. they don't stage the crime but when they catch them -- they're chirping what the producer wants.

If everyone here has come to love the other leading reality shows, give this a good chance. Look at it this way: ANY television exposure to pool while it's in this lower-than-low / absolute ZERO state is a very, very good thing - no exceptions. Even if the players bodyslam each other off the top turnbuckle, the fact that ANYTHING pool-related is on TV is excellent, since nobody even knows pool exists anymore.

Kudos to Blair for grinding this out and pulling things together to get to this point.
Dave
