Shane and Earl up at World Cup of Pool

The best match of the day was England B vs. India. Both teams played well and it went down to the wire. Amar looks like he is back in stroke. He played flawlessly! He was a great player 10-15 years ago before he quit pool for about five years.

Agreed Jay that was a real good match!! Raj and Amar made one out that blew my mind when Amar went for that 2 ball in the side. No shame in that loss but a tough loss!!

Didn't get to watch any of it but congrats to Shane and Earl on their win.

... Earl made a couple safety errors but I don't remember any missed balls that set. ...

Correct; no missed open shots by Earl or Shane. Their errors were: Shane scratched after jumping in the 1-ball in Game 3 (Russia ran out), Earl made a poor safety on the 2-ball in Game 9 (Russia ran out), Earl made a poor safety on the 4-ball in Game 10 (Russia missed the 6-9 combo to lose the game), and Shane made a poor safety (double kiss) on the 1-ball in Game 11 (Russia scratched making the 1-ball and the US ran out).

In terms of US breaking performance, Shane broke 4 times -- once dry and 3 times wet, and 2 of the wet breaks led to B&R games. Earl broke 3 times -- once dry and twice illegal (1 dry and 1 wet).

I have to applaud Earl for keeping his composure (relatively). He did show a lot of displeasure with some of Shane's and his own CB positioning, but for the most part he was able to control his emotions. I think his biggest "outburst" today was when he hit his cue on the table after playing a bad safety in game 9.

Earl didn't like the Russian player using the towel to dry his hands while he was at the table and facing the Russian player on a tough shot that he needed to play as a safety.

I'm sorry but your opponent should be still and silent when you are at the table. That's the respect that this game deserves.

Earl should never complain about being sharked from another player. That in it self is a joke. Johnnyt

Thanks for stats
Game 10 and 11 errors by USA were not punished by Russia. Instead Russia self destructed missing combo and scratching thereby losing those 2 racks. If they had won those 2 racks taking advantage of USA errors, the result would have been different. Russia would have won 7-5

Johnnyt,
Prior to this incident, Earl was the perfect gentleman at the table.

I have seen this before, where Earl was doing nothing and the other player or the audience, sticks him with a needle. He is entitled to respond imo. Unfortunately, the satisfaction of responding is often his downfall.

Every time I read these threads I can feel the hate for Earl in some posters or envy that they didn't get their choice of a partner for Shane. The only "better" partner for Shane would be his double. I've seen all the mentioned players dog their brains out when sh1t got deep in England. If your an American then act like one if not then it's understandable

Yup, USA was fortunate in both Games 10 and 11. But we can't say Russia therefore would have won 7-5. If Russia had won Game 10 with that 6-9 combo, it would have been 6-4 their favor and their break in Game 11. So the same Game 11 situation would not have occurred. Russia might have won 7-4.:) Or, any of several other outcomes were possible.

You are completely wrong on that one and simply show your ignorance on that subject with that post.

Earl in his prime was actually "that good". He won many of those events back in his prime when guys like Efren, Busty, Fong Pang Chao, Chin Shun Yang, Ralf, Ortmann, Parica, and Mika were already on the stage. Earl won his "last" world championship AFTER Mika won his, so to pretend that the game was not already international when Earl was at his peak and winning is simply BS. You clearly don't like the guy, that is fine, you don't have to, but spouting off complete BS is not needed.

Earl "was" actually that good when he had his head on a little more straight and was able to channel his intensity and focus into attacking the "game" and the "table" instead of attacking his opponent and the fans. He has mostly lost his ability to focus his emotions into the game and attack the balls like he used to. Once upon a time I don't even think Earl knew who he was playing when he was at the table shooting, he was obliterating the game itself and whoever was sitting in the chair off to the side was fairly irrelevant to Earl. Now he worries more about that person he is playing then what he himself is doing at the table, and that is sad.

Great post.

Russia wouldn't have got a shot the entire set if Shane & Earl broke and ran 7 and out, so then there's that. A lot of things would be different if this or that happened in every existing match in the history of matching up in every sport..

Earl doesn't have the right attitude, composure, and patience for a world-class tournament.
The only reason he appeared to have "all that" back in the day is because the talent was mainly in the U.S. and he was "one of our best."

If I were SVB I would be going nuts. In fact, just wait for the day when SVB "goes off" on Earl and tells him exactly "where to go."
Just wait and see because it will happen.

Again I ask, why the hell is Earl representing the U.S.?

Do you realize how clueless you are? What you need to do is find out how strong earl wasin the 80's-2000's!

One for you, how many players play at his level, at his age??? Nobody!!! Say what you want, it's a free country(for now), but earl can still dominate! I don't care what anyone says

I'll add one more:) if you took the rules and said push after the break every rack,,,, I honestly think earl is probably the favorite!! On the planet;)

You sir, need a history lesson about Earl Strickland!! :)

I'm wondering if winning the world championship in 2002 is considered back in the day?

I'm wondering if winning the world championship in 2002 is considered back in the day?

Not for me;) I started playing 05;)

And for what it's worth, due to the fact I couldn't see the great mosconi in his prime, or Harold Worst, I'll go out on a limb here and say the 2 greatest players ever are Earl and Efren! Nobody could pocket a ball better than Earl and nobody could play position like Efren! Hands down, imho, the 2 best ever!

That being said, I think in a few yrs, if Joe Tuckers American Rotation could take off, we will see a lot better rotation players! I've been playing that for a few months now and its taken my 10-ball game about 10 points better(Joe's 10-ball drill) I went from solid 50's to solid 60's:) thanks Joe:)
