butt construction

Kool I was just wondering about it if I ever come across a dazzling piece of bocote bubinga or any other im fond of that I could make a butt from it
actually kind of intend to have several sticks made in each of those woods should I find a good enough specimen
im a cnc programmer and could reverse engineer a butt if needed

Coring is when a gun drill ( various sizes) is used to bore a hole through a workpiece. Then either a laminated or sold wood dowl is glued ( various glues can be used) into the cored wood. This is done for stability and or for weight control.

Each cue maker will have there own method of coring. As in what size hole they bore through the workpiece and what wood they use to core that particular workpiece with. Thats it in basic terms.

Sorry, I meant what is the max. drill length that can be achieved, from one side.
Thanks again,
Petros

The answer is still the same. That depends on the length of the lathe and the length of the gun drill. A 20" overall drill length that has a 16" max drill depth is fairly typical for cue guys.

Sorry for coming back to this, so the max. length you can drill a forearm from one side through the other is 16"?
Thanks,
Petros

How long is the forearm ? Most are 12-13" .
You can gun drill the length of a rifle barrel.
If you have a 30" piece of wood and you want it drilled, it can be done.

Depends on the drill you have
Yes it may be 20 inchs long but may only have 16 inch length of cut
the rest is straight shank,

flute length and overall length are different
flutes cut, shank dont,

Thanks for the replies, I was wondering if it would be possible having a cored forearm of 20" length, I'm interested in knowing that for a possible future project.

A gun drill can be any length. It just matters that the person doing the work is comfortable with that length. Remember gun drills get their name for a reason. And barrels aren't all short.

When do we start producing internally fluted low deflection shafts ?
I'm in for $1K and half of the business.
