U.S. Chances in the Mosconi Cup

With this "new" lineup on both sides, it sure is going to be interesting. The first day will show the signs of mental toughness. There are always some players who break under pressure, especially among the freshmen, but even as a solid Europe supporter, I feel there are going to be breakdowns on both sides. It all boils down how the American newcomers can handle the pressure and if Shane can keep his level of play. Because he is the man to beat from the European side and every man is going to play his heart out against Shane. It won't be an easy ride in the park for him. What goes with the Europeans, I agree we could have had a stronger team, especially with Mika and Thorsten.
Go Europe! (With those odds I'd be betting on USA though :D )

play an all star team against the USA Team

Maybe they should have "Team Germany," "Team Finland," "Team England.
"Team Greece," and "Team Sweden" play an all star team against the USA Team.......that would be a fair challenge. ;)

Maybe Europe should play the "B" team instead

Mika
Thorsten

Do you mean one person from each country? That could be fun actually.

I like a British team's chances against a US team. I'm not sure about this European team, though. I think the US has a pretty good chance this year, dependent on how certain Europeans perform.

Due or Die, it's"Team Asia," or "Team Universe" in 2015

The producers desperately need Team USA to win this year, that's certainly a plus. If the match went like last year I'd expect to see "Team Asia," or "Team Universe" in 2015.

I don't think team eur is that strong .
They could put together a stronger team for sure .

One player from each country would be overwhelming to contend with

That would be brutally unfair!!! How could Team USA possibly compete with players from 5 different countries? Maybe we could take on two countries, but FIVE.....seems impossible.;)

The odds online are USA is slightly more than a 5-2 underdog. I will bet 200 against your 500, but you will have to post. :)

What I see online is Europe 2/5 and USA 7/4 (or 1.4 and 2.75 for new fangled peeps)

Seems like quite a big arbitrage for the bookies!!

The odds are 5:2 and 7:4 (See picture below)

I'll meet you in the middle and go 2:1. I'll bet 500 to win 250. I'll post with you no problem. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1416923308.383758.jpg

I'm starting this thread partly in protest of the nonsensical thread that has been raging on here about three players who are not on the team. I prefer to support the five guys who ARE on the team and the coach who put them there. I feel that is a much better use of our time and energy.

Jay:

You just don't get it. Don't you realize it's much more sexy and en vogue to spread sensationalism than it is to give props and support to the guys that are actually playing? ;)

It's like that "$100 bill on your windshield / carjacking" myth you see being spread around on Facebook at the moment. (It's going around like wildfire.) Instead of looking on Snopes or other myth-busting site, seeing that this is a well-documented myth, and sending the link to Snopes to the person that is spreading the "$100 bill on your windshield / carjacking" myth to squash it, no, people instead want to believe that crap and spread it even further!

It's just an extension of the "I Sounded the First Alarm!"(TM) fifteen seconds of fame thing.

I agree in that instead of spending the inordinate amount of time discussing something that, in the end, makes no difference to the outcome (as far as how many people are going to be on the team, even as compared to past years, which is 5), we should be supporting the 5 players that will be playing.

Great post,

Mosconi Cup

I like the young bloods on our team along with with Corey. Shane Helming the ship should seal the deal. Go USA!

"European Team" is actually an ALL STAR TEAM from several different countries.

I was actually joking. :groucho:

The fact is it's not "country vs country," so we're not exactly playing on an even playing field. To put the USA against England, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Greece, etc is a bit lopsided. It wasn't the first 10+ years because the other countries were still behind the USA (experience/skill wise), except for a couple of players.

The downturn in pool's popularity in the USA (due to no TV coverage) has really widened the gap because it's gaining popularity in European countries. The USA trying to compete against 5 countries is almost like Michael Jordan trying to match up against 5 NBA players......it's physically and mathematically doubtful. This analogy is certainly not literal, just pointing out that the "European Team" is actually an ALL STAR TEAM from several different countries.

I believe the USA team will pull off a HUGE UPSET this year because "the momentum" is behind them to make this event competitive. This gives them a substantial advantage (momentum wise), and all that's left is contacting those big, big, pockets.;)

My prediction is the USA team winning by 2 on the last day.

If the U.S needs to play thier best to keep the cup going, maybe Europe could play their worst. If the U.S wins or it is very close Europe probably gets a payday next year too.. Johnnyt

I like this USA Mosconi group more so than most from the recent past as they seem more likely to behave like a team- leaving the egos and showcasing at home. They will need that added focus as well as a "team-net" of communications and support to prevail over the "current keepers of the Cup." I don't mind losing but 2013 was an ugly loss. The 2014 Team looks to be all good (influential) apples.

Bring it on home.

Shane is having a banner year, winning the U.S. Open for the third straight time, overcoming a world class field of players. This alone is an unprecedented feat and one of the most amazing accomplishments I've seen in all my years in pool. He followed that up by winning the World Pool Masters (in England by the way!), and has won just about everything he's played in this year. He is the 'Player Of The Year' hands down this year! That's for starters.

I really like what Justin Bergman has done this year to earn his spot on the team as well. He has basically been on the road all year going from tournament to tournament, playing on big tables and small, and grinding out win after win. Granted these are not considered "major" tournaments, but every one has been a high profile event with strong fields of players and hefty entry fees to boot. He's won this year playing 9-Ball, Ten Ball and One Pocket. And he's handled himself well in the process, showing maturity under fire. I see him as being very well prepared for the Mosconi, thanks to his work regimen this year.

Justin Hall has stayed closer to home in Florida, only occasionally traveling to out of state events, but when he did he was right up there every time. He has been lighting it up since his big win at Tunica last year, and has become a threat to beat anyone at any game, much like Bergman. He currently has a challenge in place for anybody to come to Florida and play him! Justin is no shrinking violet, he is ready willing and able to take on all comers. This is the kind of guy you want in a situation like the Mosconi Cup. I don't expect to see him awed or cowed by the occasion.

Corey and John are the vets, both with previous Mosconi Cup experience. I see them in a mentoring capacity for the young guys, helping to prepare them for what's ahead. Both of these guys are proven champions with the track record to go with it. Both have major titles under their belt, so they know how to rise to the occasion. I look for them to be leaders this year and set the example that the other guys will follow.

And Mark Wilson is the glue that binds them all together. He is a well respected leader with the credentials to do what it takes to create a winning team. He has already done an exemplary job in putting this team together and is our first coach to be so hands-on all year in team building.

Look I may be wrong about all this, and there is no question that Europe has a powerful squad again. But somehow in my gut I like our chances. I think it's going to be a dogfight this year. I don't see Team USA wilting like we've seen in recent years. I fully expect these five guys to hang tough and make life hard on the heavily favored Euro squad.

Since you described our team in such a clear and accurate manner, I believe Europe is the Underdog/Chartier dis year.
