Imagine that.

So Mark Griffin has decided on a new meaning of team. Good to know. Maybe he should tell his view of what a team is to the NFL, NBA, NHL, and the MLB. They're all wrong on their concept of a team. And it was Mark Wilson who decided to name 8 potential players, not Matchroom.
I'm glad that the whole problem in this situation now lies on the definition of Team.
If you made Oscar 9k, Sossel 17k, and Shuff 8k all year on your job and had a shot at 20k, 2 or 3 times what you made all year, human nature says your going to say "I'll go". You can say you would have gone in the same position, but I don't believe any of you. I said basicly the same thing on one of the first few pages of this thread. Johnnyt
I'm sorry you weren't chosen to be Captain this year, but maybe after reading this thread Matchroom will reach out to you next year.
Pool's simply not a very good "team" sport, that's apparent. The Mosconi Cup is an amazing production and for what it's intended to be it does superbly. Pool is a great solo game more like chess, or checkers. They are great individual games, but awkward in a team format (do they even have team chess?).
With that being said, the MC format doesn't intend on bringing out the best of the game itself. The game is much more complicated than just running the table and "high fiving" everyone....you won't see much strategic battling, it's "run and gun" in the Mosconi Cup format, and that's what it's meant to be.....vibrantly entertaining.
Watching a Pro run the table is like watching golfers make 2' and 3' putts, it's interesting for a few minutes, then you want to see difficult situations that force the players to make challenging shots......pool doesn't have this format......yet.

What I do find interesting CJ, is the doubles matches where players get their heads together and discuss strategy etc. There are very few tournaments like this in pool. IMO this is very much a Team event, with the other four players being supportive of the guy at the table, offering advice between games along with the Captain.

For instance, let's assume they gave their word to go along even if they weren't picked.
MAYBE. Juuuust maybe.
There is a specific reason they decided to break their word.
Something that when combined with financial reasons, was just a no brainer.
I'm sure there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff that not everybody is privy to.

97% of the United States population couldn't afford to take a week off, pay their own expenses and travel to make not be compensated - even when the patriotic situation is real it's impossible without funding, I'm sure a lot of parents would love to fly to Afghanistan to visit sons and daughters......but they simply can't afford it, no shame in that.
Pro pool players aren't the only ones that are struggling, they are actually in a HUGE majority. Even in rough, challenging times it's important to to keep one's spirits up.
Anyone that says they would do something different in the player shoes are either delusional, or lying.....it's easy to say we'd always do the "honorable" thing, but life doesn't usually pan out that way......there's always unforeseen variables.
So why is it there's so many pool leagues if it's not a good team sport ,, as a spectator sport , depends who's playing at what level ,, from what I was reading during the CSI US Open and some of the World matches , is people were impressed with the quality, certaily much more enjoyable than a battle of safes ,, only the true hard core fan appreciates a chess game in pool ,

What's really sad, is that a persons word is so far from your mindset that you can't even conceive of someone being honorable. They must be delusional or lying in your mind. Says a lot about your outlook on life.
Not talking about "someone", we're taking about 3 pro pool players that between the 3 of them have made less that 35k for the year. Then you can add the rack boy crap to it. Johnnyt
Ten months, $80 a week from exhibitions, gambling, sponsors. That's $3200 extra they could have had. But, go ahead with the excuses. It's all they have at this point.
