What Do You Hate To See In A Cue?

Floating Points
Tulip Wood
Reconstituted "Precious" stones
In facts any type of gems
flat faced joints with smaller pins
rear balanced cues

(I am only talking about custom cues, I don't know any proper custom cue maker who uses decals, or coats wraps ;))

Brown phenolic ringwork or joint. I hate when you can see the mesh in the material and all of the brown or tan phenolic is like this.

Rounded points or points with inlays at the end of the point to hide the fact that they don't all run out to the same length.

Rounded points
Floating points
Turquoise inlays
Malachite inlays
White lizard wraps
Reverse points in butt sleeve

These are the things that
make me throw up in my
mouth a little.

rounded points, and copies/ "tributes" to other peoples designs.

and any cue owned by ddadams except his keith and tibbitts.

Really dull cue designs.......any veneers or points that aren't razor sharp.......rattlesnake wraps on a great custom cue.......sloppy cue-maker signatures on custom cues but some cursive signatures are cool like Tascarella, Richard Black, Paul Mottey, etc.

Oh yeah, things I hate in a pool cue............cue-maker names/logos on cue butts which are too large.........sloppy inlays & ring work............ floating points regardless of the cue-maker..............shafts larger than 13mm or smaller than 12.4 mm..........pool cues weighing more than 20 ounces (like my custom Runde Schon weighs).............any cue that isn't straight........and every seller that bullshits you that their cue is straight but actually wasn't.

How about a reality check?

Poolstick
What do not like to see?
Balls missed.
And I love White Delrin Caps. The word is unbreakable lets add that too.
I hate broken Caps and missed shots and bumperles battered butts.
Sticks that play beat Cues that look great but are duds.
Total Utilitarian.
That is what I hate.
No playing broke Cues.
And love sticks that play.
Example? Earls stick.
As for Cues that play lights out and are hard to break?
I buy those!

What I really like in cues

Szamboti Designs
Bushka designs
Notched mother of pearl diamonds
Box cues with veneer

Hoppe style butts
Southwest cues, but not tributes or copies

I have several of each of these on order
I have 3 Box cues from Bob Owen on order
I am usually leery of new designs but I give Bob free reign

I love the 360 Brunswick designs and the ones Jerry Rauenzahm does
I love the mother of pearl cue he made for me

At 71 years I must confess to liking things that I could not afford when I was younger

What might surprise you is that I love theme cues,Gambling mice and traps
Wylie Coyote and Roadrunner

Of course only Drexler can do them with inlays
He is far out and I like his work

I play with a Larry Vigus solid maple butt cue
I like the simplicity and quality finish

I also like some of the Jake Hulcy stuff, this guy is like Picasso and I am more like
Kodak he goes far out and away but I love his simpler stuff that is so unique

Here is a guy that will be super remembered

In cases and boots I love Ostrich

I saw earlier that all of the things i like are hated by a lot of you guys

I also like Ken Kerner, something about a guy who stands up for
his friends and isn't afraid to stand against tasteless morons who
criticize Barry Szamboti even if it makes him look narrow,I like him

The only thing I don;t like to see in my box from Barry is the bill
(I am an itsy bit tight),but when I get a call offering me a profit
it is amazing how quickly sticker shock goes away

I like Barry too,and apparently so do all of the real lovers of classic cues,
I love his cues and if one of them happens to have a glue line that some
pool detective can spot on a highly magnified picture, well I
will buy that cue for what you gave Barry for it,Of course guys that really buy
Barry cues are so happy with his cues they don't care if they are only 98% perfect

This doesn't really address things I don't like
So forgive me if I strayed from the subject

I find this one a bit surprising coming from you, given your affinity for 'tribute' cues that have been done a thousand times over.

Design

Any overall design that does not flow has no appeal to me.

The best example of this are designs which are a collision of exotic woods that are seemingly thrown together just for the sake of using rare woods. Examples would be Cocobolo into ebony, three different species of woods on a wrapless cue (forearm/handle/butt sleeve).
