Genuine Concern Over AzB

Jennie;

You should hang here more often. :)

I like the idea of a virtual pool room where we have lots of different kinds of characters, just like at the real halls.

You and Lou aren't seeing eye to eye at the moment but you both have the ability to express your opposite viewpoints without devolving into low end mean-spirited dialogue.

It's possible to disagree without being hateful.

Trolls, take note.

I don't need to change, Lou. I like me just the way I am. :grin-square:

And I'm not changing the group. I don't really want to. It has evolved into something that is just not my cup of tea anymore, truth be told.

I'm not you. I don't like being physically threatened or attacked. Maybe it's because I am a female and can't defend myself against a mentally or emotionally unstable person. Maybe I don't want to feel like I need to carry a concealed weapon if I ever go to a pool event again. I don't care to fear for my life because I post on a pool forum. That's the difference between you and me.

People get tired of you writing incessantly about your opinions of pro players, but me, I just read it and know that's how you are. I'm not threatened by it. I don't feel like confronting you to let you know what my opinion is about your opinion. It is what it is. This is your favorite pastime on a pool forum, it would seem, to condemn pro players. I have never been threatened by you, FWIW, and I hope you have never felt threatened by me, either. :p

I wrote my opinion on this thread. I don't need to change. I just quit hanging out here. This forum will never be the same for me, and that's okay. I have moved on. I felt compelled to share my thoughts in this thread, since I have invested about 12 or 13 years of my life to this place.

I hope you continue to enjoy your AzBilliards experience.

OK, JAM, so don't change and things will go on, same ol' same ol.

And no, I don't like being threaten nor do I carry a concealed weapon when I travel to pool events. (That, BTW is an example of you not seeing things as they are and then twisting the logic behind the issue.)

About the pro players: you take your shots at me from afar, often following something I've written about a pro player and then ragging to no one in particular about how awful it is that pro players are abused here. You never see that some of them behave poorly here, often with a chip on their shoulder, and say silly stuff. And when someone speaks up against their boorish behavior you twist things into, "This is your favorite pastime on a pool forum, it would seem, to condemn pro players." In your book, pro players can do no wrong and when someone points out their failings, whether about being a dick, giving bad advice, or someone perhaps brings up their past criminal activity, you turn a blind eye and wring your hands about how terrible pros are treated here.

By-and-large, those in the pro pool player community ain't members of Royal Family.

Thank you. You're right. Okay.
I'm actually procrastinating doing my job today about international law. Yuck!
It's more fun to hang out on AzBilliards, but the clock is ticking, and my deadline is looming, so off I go into the land of Nuremberg Trials.

I saw what you did, a minute ago, with the guy about the pictures. Very Nice. See you tomorrow. :)

JAM and I go way back. We're cool.

I think :-o

Most people have slowed their buying waaaaaaay down.
If no one is buying , the sellers give up , the sellers give up , not as much to look at.
With those parts missing , there is less conversation about new purchases , which one is best , what should I do , look what I bought.
There are about 4 or 5 people on onepocket.org that account for 80% of the new posts and keeping the old ones alive.
Invite them over here and azb will be bigger than ever!

I certainly migrate more towards FB. My big turn off, outside of a one certain poster, is AZB is stagnant. Its usually the same posts, from the same people. Heck even the same trolls, trolling in the same way. I can interact on FB, and be fairly sure of who I'm talking with, and if there info is even worth my time.

all the best,

Forums no matter the content all have similar issues after you have been a member for awhile. The subject gets covered. I belong to several guitar forums & similar comments get posted there that you can only talk so much about strings, picks, pickups , amps etc so much before you've covered it all. It's the same here with tips, shafts, cues etc.

It seems no matter the subject that all forums hit the wall so to speak for members after awhile. Some generally choose to leave at that point they reach saturation level on certain subjects. Some stay and filter through content for things they find interesting. Some proclaim dismay that the forum "they" joined is now somehow changed & reminisce about how great it used to be, many times this is due to members they grew to know drift away, sometimes it's because the forum has degenerated in content of subject matter or new members.

I like the forum, many warned me off & I heard a lot of negative about it before I joined, "it's just bangers that don't appreciate help offered by elite players", etc, etc. Sometimes I see that, sometimes I see what the person that talked me into joining spoke of, people that love the game & care about it. I've interacted with some great people here & as I have 0 interest in Facebook or other forms of social media I enjoy it here.

So I thought I would like to share some of my thoughts as a relatively new member of the forums. I have noticed for a while that most posts that are from beginners asking for advise are usually met with ridicule and sideways remarks. Of course there are people who want to help and give an honest reply but more often than not you get "this has been covered before" insert crappy remark here. I read one in the cue maker forum about live centers and most replies were of how this person should not be working with a lathe and that he was going to hurt themselves. The poster just had a simple question and was met with junk. Why would people post here if all they read is asshole remarks instead of honest help they came here for. This is the largest billiards site in the world and the forums are full of bitter people that don't want to help. Maybe this is why posts are down. We are pushing away new posters with constant negativity.

There's no excuse for rudeness, that's for certain. When it happens, get right back into their face with it. Tell them that everything has been covered before, and we're damn sure likely to cover it again. If they get huffy, call Mr. Wilson, and tell him about it. I'll vouch for you. He's is a personal friend of mine.

At a time when pool halls are closing, pro events are fewer and fewer, and America has fallen off the map in WPA competition, pool players and fans are fewer in number and, to some extent, demoralized. Even some of our most dedicated and insightful posters have given up on AZB, and that's a shame. The quality of the threads has gone way down, and the number of main forum threads that ought to be in NPR has made finding the valuable content harder than ever. This forum still offers some great threads, but finding them has never been more difficult.

Too much bs from people that think they should be immune from being called on it. This isn't a pro forum, this isn't an elitist forum.. it's a pool forum. But, hey, it's like a sport for these people to make fun of lesser players. Good for you. Clap. Clap. Clap.

Two distinct entities:

No one should confuse good drama with trolling and pot stirring.

The kinds of drama threads we used to get were like fuel that drove az.

I'm talking about threads like when Dippy Dave air barrelled Frost and Billy and the tush hogs and stolen car and all the other crazy shit that surrounded this event.

Or when "Dildo Hair" climbed out the bathroom window in the middle of her match that wasn't going well with OMGWFT. It was amazing - "dildo hair" became google-able, part of the vernacular.

The DYD cue, the excitement during the contest, then when it became Bill Stroud firing his air barrel...

John vs Lou starring in "The Hassle at The Castle" - yes, I just made that up. :)

These, along with thoughful, informative, helpful and resourceful posts were the life-blood of Az.

When we have great posters like JoeW (a few posts above), who choose not to frequent this site because of a mean and antagonistic atmosphere, then something is wrong.

Drama can be a great thing; often a reason to look forward to returning. Good entertainment.

On the other hand, the antagonistic, mean-spirited activity only seems to be enjoyed by those who are regularly slinging it. To most everyone else, it's not even remotely entertaining.

For what seems to be a growing number, that sort of nonsense appears to be a reason to move on.

best,
brian kc

Don't forget the episodes between Schmidt and Harriman. And members of this forum staking pros to enter events.

Agree that there has been some tapering off in the activity on the forum. I've had my share of issues with some of the developments in the "tone" of the forum lately, to the point where I decided to leave and never come back. I've had a change of heart, because I feel this is still the go to place for info and discussions. It takes a lot to ignore cheap shots from people, and it's hard to let it go sometimes, but that's what I've decided to do.

It is an open forum which means that people are free to post whatever they like. This is what I value the most, since there is a chance that someone might post something that will make a huge difference to you. It also means that we will have 10000000 threads about which cue and tip to chose, but it's up to the individual to ignore those. I've tried to make suggestions on how to minimize these problems, but in the end, it's better just to read what interests you and ignore everything else.

I think the "salvation" of this forum and the sport of billiards in general lies in how beginners are treated, so I will always be an advocate of being polite and helpful to them. The forum has a huge amount of knowledge stored and it will always be sought out by those who seek it. People wanting to interact with pros (sucking up) will migrate to FB for the latest gossip etc, that is pretty much unavoidable.

I like this post....the 'open forum' concept is why I'm here.
We're gonna have some bad days, just like any good pool hall I
ever hung around.

But we're gonna have some good ones too.

This is somewhat how I try to view my existence on the board. Doesn't work all the time.

Maybe Buddha was a member of an earlier message board.

You know, Terry...it just struck me why I like my AZ presence instead
of going on FB and introducing myself.

Zen Buddhists ask "What is the sound of your true voice?"

On here, we have the chance to drop our everyday persona ( which
means mask ) and maybe express what we really think.

Very true Paul. You should visit Regina. We have our own Speakers Corner in the Park.

The lamps that adorn it are from Jolly Old England.

Unfortunate that many people these days don't even know that place is called Speakers Corner and it seldom gets used.

I think kids may skate board on it more than anything else.

And in doing so, may be cause for nice debate or a Flame War, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for blowing off steam that we accumulate from our everyday lives.
I am sure that there were a few Rotten Tomatoes thrown at speakers in London also.

As I mentioned, I used to Hate the idea of Face Book. I was able to tailor my page with some interesting people that link many good sites to read.
So, not as bad as I or others had originally thought it was. Your page can be whatever you want it to be.

I was at Speakers Corner once...the man was ranting about the evils of alcohol.
A guy at the back says " I'll have a sin and tonic."

Yep, just like AZ.....

All this talk about Speakers Corner and London, I have a sudden urge for Fish and Chips for supper.

Better bring up some frozen Wall Eye from the dungeon.

Paul, we have a place in town that serves it on Sunday evenings as a Special. OMG, 2 people can eat one order.
