Is the Object Ball just a "Mirrored Reflection" of the Cue Ball

aiming is done visually

Aiming = Alignment, CJ is just trying to sound like he knows what he's talking about.

Alignment is done with the feet and body (relative to the line of the shot), while aiming is done visually.

It's like "popping" a towel, or a whip, the timing must be very precise

I agree. Most of the times when I screw up it is because I "babied" the shot and let up on it.

Aloha.

Yes, most shots missed are because of a consistent cue speed.....this is not as effective as one that accelerates precisely at the moment of impact. It's like "popping" a towel, or a whip, the timing must be very precise indeed. The advantages are difficult to overcome!

An important part of alignment that doesn't get enough attention IMO is the stance itself without regard to any shot. We tend to emphasize aligning with the shot, and give less attention to aligning our body parts with each other for optimal performance - to "finding our stance".

I think it's useful to do this without any shot in mind, in fact without any balls on the table - just finding the most stable and comfortable arrangement of body parts that puts the stick naturally under the vision center and the stroke naturally straight and in line with it.

When you find that stance, look down at the stick and your feet and remember that picture.

You go do this then setup some of those shots I posted and see if you can put your feet where you pictured them......especially the first three.

This type of generalized statement about the stance without considering the shot is just bad advice.

Guess no one has ever had a shot where you had to put one butt cheek on the table, keeping one foot on the floor to do the shot.

Set up a shot close to the rail, and do a behind the back shot. You think your feet will be in the same place using the advice above.

I started wondering if people just set up easy shots and think that's all there is when it comes to shot making.

if you think there is any form of alignment that happens in pool.......will that's just being short sighted and wanting to be part of the good ole boys club.

Can you show the shot line in those pics? Every time I look for it on the floor to use, I can't find it. Anyone else able to find it on the floor? Or anywhere for that matter?

it feels pretty good to play the game as well as it can be played.

Finding the most comfortable place to put your body parts is not prudent. The human body was not designed to play pool, so "if it feels right, it's probably wrong".

This is probably why so many players are stuck at a 5-7 level and can't improve.

Being comfortable playing pool is not something I've condoned, although when you train your body correctly it feels pretty good to play the game as well as it can be played. 'The GAME is the teacher'

This comment makes zero sense. The human body wasn't "designed" to do most of the things that modern day humans do unless it involves basic survival skills and reproducing. So making a claim as such is nothing more than double talk.

Putting words in quotes, such as "if it feels right, it's probably wrong", is also meaningless without citing who you are quoting. Is that something Mosconi used to say? Something you got out of a self help book? Something you just "improv-eyes-ed"? I think that it would help people make an informed opinion about the information you are providing.

if you are the exception to this rule, congratulations, you are exceptional

It's a rule of thumb....if it feels right, it's probably wrong applies to my experience in the game of pool. If this doesn't make sense to you, then you'll just have to accept that at face value. Playing the game in a "comfortable" way is probably not the most effective way, if you are the exception to this rule, congratulations, you are exceptional.

Nope, I consider myself normal, maybe you are the exception. If you feel the need to contort yourself into unnatural or uncomfortable positions because you somehow feel it makes you play your top game, go ahead. That type of information just flies in the face of every coach or instructor that Ive ever seen in any physical activity.
Most pool instructors teaching stance teach comfort alignment and stroking clearance. Why do you feel your way is better?

I agree with this 100%. Find the proper stance for YOU and stay with that. The proper stance for somebody else may not be the proper stance for YOU.

Aloha.

What I'm about to write is heresy to all instructors, including C J, but foot positioning is not a big deal in my game.. Don't get me wrong. I put them in the right position and it feels better to have them in the right position than the wrong position..
I look at it like brooming, raking, or snow shoveling. It feels better to have my right hand on the top of the
stick and my left hand on the bottom, but if I reversed the hands I'd have no problem still picking up all the dirt, leaves, or snow.
It feels the best having my feet in the correct position, but if I get lazy and put the feet in the wrong place, I still make the same percentage of shots. I know I'm certainly in the minority here.

As for your knock on CJ. You and many others in this forum should really learn how to read him. Much of what he says, resonates with me immediately, sometimes he analyzes too much for my taste, but if you read everything, little "gems" tend to pop out which will get me thinking and lead me to my own tinkering, which might be a tad different from his "way, " but his ideas turn out to be the catalyst which leads me to discovering "my way."

It's just no fun debating with you anymore. It's your way or nothing at all.
I don't see him saying anything about "my way or no way".
I just see him saying "my way gives a better percentage in the long run over yours".
If you still play draw poker, do you continue to draw 2 cards to a flush?
CJ simply teaches a tighter way to gamble on pool which will stand up to the long, boring, miserable, drag of busting someone. (to try and avoid the inevitable fight that will break out).
Just my opinion. No offense meant.

Then I want proof that CJ's way is better and so far, CJ has never shown proof of anything.

Man, have you been freeze dried or just doing some hard time?

I'd prefer to not get into the argument. Banks and CJ already had this argument a few weeks ago. It ended up with no proof and no answers.

And don't even say I'm going off topic. This OP topic was answered a while ago and this thread has already gone off the tracks multiple times.
