How strong is the Ohio pool scene?

I left Cleveland 28 years ago.

There was Danny Vegh's ...gone
Velvet Rail........................gone
LeCue.................?
Westgate Lanes
Lakewood lanes.............antique tables..........Still there?

This tournament is legendary, I used to go play in it sometimes and in no particular order Steve Cook , Gary Spaeth , Jason Miller, Frank Ruby, Joe Brown, Stanley Morycz {sp} the " Chief" {the coney island kid }, and another handful of really good players played every week , you had to be a really good player to get to 10th place or above.
The new guys you mentioned were all just kids when I was going there , but they all play great.
There is nothing better for a pool players growth than to be surrounded by excellent players , the learning curve is much sharper and higher quality.

Just another comment on how strong that tourney is (or at least used to be - haven't been there in 20 years or so). Was the hardest $5 tournament to win due to the field and the short race to 3 in 9 ball. I did get lucky and win it one night. Faced Jason Miller in the semi finals and then beat downtown Joe Brown in the finals...good times and always action.

Pool is dead in Cincinnati.

We don't have the infamous Beechmont Billiards anymore  but I would also like to mention Michaels as someone did earlier. Great room ran by a stand up guy. There is always action to be had (if not there already, they are just phone calls away).

There is supposed to be another big one pocket tournament coming up soon that is ran by Dee Adkins that may or may not be handicapped again but for sure wil have a calcutta.

Ohio indeed has/had some top notch players over the years, that's for sure.

What's it like out in Youngstown? I am going out there in the spring for a golf trip (some nice affordable couses around there) and maybe I'll bring my cue.

Western PA /Ohio runoff

I went to a small Western PA college (Slippery Rock University) and a stone cold killer used to come to our 8 table student rec area from Youngstown, OH to try to hustle. His name was SHAWN PUTNAM. (Mid 1990s)

I'm from Akron, Ohio. Went to Hoban HS and used to play at Starchers on Arlington.

Miss that pool hall.

I can remember going into Starcher's during the week at midnight and there being meaningful action on practically every table, and players of all skill levels.

There were close to 100 guys in that area that played right around Hennessee's speed, and a couple hundred more a ball or 2 under that, just unbelievably deep. Tommy D.

The good ole days...

I remember walking into Beechmont Billiards on a Friday or Saturday night and every table was in use. All of the 9 foot tables were money matches, whether it be $5 a game 9 ball or $200 a game one pocket, there was always action of all skill levels you could get into or sweat.

You play mighty good if you won that tournament.

Good pool hall....although they had one table too many in that first row....
...had to sit on the next table if you were froze on the side rail.

I miss Joe Kerr big time...and the game misses him even more.

I remember Middletown Whitey....stuck a lot of games at one-pocket...his opponent
messed up a take-out....left the ball in the jaws and the cue ball one foot away...
...Whitey starts laughing....he says..."Well, I might lose all my money...
...but I WILL make THIS ball."

Starchers may have been Earl's favorite room
