Matchroom - Don't Mess Up - Make Sure You Keep Mark Wilson As The Captain

It is about the players, not the captain. My opinion.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

Team USA needs a captain and TBH it might as well be Mark Wilson as he seems to be OK and puts some actual effort in.

But

It is the players themselves that are the key reason for the better showing and for much of the improved chemistry.

Bergman and Sky both had great a great year leading up to this event, both of them improved tremendously due to being more active on the pro scene and putting in solid efforts throughout the year. They are both also very good friends with great chemistry due to their doubles matches their success this year is theirs, they are the ones that worked hard for it and it is them to look to for the achievements they had in the MC.

The other 3 guys? TBH SVB was his normal self, he was fairly emotional, not hugely supporting of his team mates when in doubles action, average at best in singles. Corey came out of a strong US Open performance and shot like poo. Dechaine was a barrel of nerves the whole time but he "did" try to be a part of the team which was nice to see, except in the SVB doubles grouping when Dechaine was ignored by his team mate as much as a person can be in a scotch doubles match.

Not sure I saw the huge Mark Wilson effect. I saw the Sky/Bergman effect, but those two players get the credit for that, they both spent the entire year working towards the success they had in this MC.

Marcus was actually more active and personable with his team than Mark during the whole event. Marcus cheered and supported his team, Mark sat in the stands with a stern look on his face like a teacher that has a wooden ruler across their lap ready to smack a kid across the knuckles if they spell a word wrong. Not sure that is what Team USA needed, the last thing Mike and Corey needed was more pressure.

You mean Mark was like the hoodie you know him the coach of the Patriots , never says much or does much in the limelight but his players know " do your job " is what's preached and all that matteres and guess what works pretty dam well for them , skirts and Pom Poms don't bring victories
What does bring victories is a winning attitudes some people who have never won anything can't possibly understand what that entails or what it means never mind how you accomplish it with a lesser skilled team
Fact is he milked this team for just about all they had and with a couple of breaks could have been been staring victory in the face
Marcus had a horse that took no more than letting out the reins I could have coached that team

I hope everyone saw the progression and what Mark is creating. Yes the USA lost but they played with tremendous heart and emotion, fought til the end. It was great to see. Mark continues to take 5 unique personalities that battle against each other for 11 1/2 months and turn them into a team in just 2 weeks. He has expectations for the players. I have watched matches with SVB in them for 10 years now and have never seen him with such emotion. That should tell you all you need to know.

He has withstood a lot of social media criticism - many times it being bluntly rude - for some of his selections, for his expectations and still stood tall. I have nothing but respect for the man.

And while Mark is doing what he does for Team USA, he is promoting pool like no other. Go back and look in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 -- there wasn't even 1/4 of the interest in the Mosconi Cup on threads on AZ that there is now.

Congrats to all team USA. You all wore the jersey well.

I was impressed at the professionalism the team displayed at the table. I was especially impressed with Justin and Skylar - they both conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism. You would never know they were rookies on the team.

My favorites players to watch were Justin Bergman and Albin Ouschan. So refreshing to see such amazing young talent.

You may recall I complained about Justin's jumpiness and slow play against Oscar - he sure turned that boat around.

Both have their merits and both work differently for different people. Coaching is not a "black and white" thing and neither are the personality types of the players. What might work for a cocky A-type personality with a large amount of self confidence might not work for a quiet B-type personality who requires different types of playing environments and support to excel.

A coach needs to be able to read people and adapt to what each person needs for each of those people to be able to compete at their peak ability.

One size does not fit all much of the time and while the USA has tremendous pool talents on the team we had this year it absolutely did NOT have similar personality types and each player was very unique in how they need to approach the game to be successful.

A coach can not attempt to have a "one style fits all" type of approach unless the players are all similar in form. Marcus actually had an easier jib by far, 4 of his 5 players are very much similar styles of players and compete well with each other and know how to boost up each other. Albin stood out like a sore thumb as the odd man out on the team and approaches these things very differently from the other guys and needs to be handled differently to bring out his best.
