I was watching the Mezz West State tour, and the commentators announced that the Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament will be a Mosconi Cup points event starting in 2016. First, is this true?

Second, if it is, is it right to have a regional event as a points event? I know the Swannee is a very popular event, but at its core it is a fun event for locals to that area.

It is not a "professional" event by most definitions. It is played in a local room, over two days, and there are many stories of players simply quitting because the heat in the room was overbearing.

The money added is more in line with a regional event than a larger professional event.

Thoughts?

Whatever the formula for next year, it can't possibly worse than that of this year.

Outside of the Derby and the US Open the Steinway Classic was the toughest field of the year (tougher than Turning Stone and Super Billiards Expo) and it didn't even carry points. The Texas Tornado Open had a killer field, too, and it didn't carry points. The Gotham Open had a killer field and it didn't carry points.

There's no reason that any bar table event should carry points, and that includes the US Bar Table Championships.

Let's see if we screw this up again this year.

I can't comment on the rest of it (aside from that I was also listening to the stream), but it has previously been hosted by Hard Times in Bellflower, California. Next year it will be hosted at On Cue Billiards in La Mesa, near San Diego. The conditions should be improved.

I'm a BB player for the last 40 years and I don't think ANY world tournament should played on bar boxes or ANY points given for MC played on the BB. No other country even has bar boxes. Johnnyt

Bergman, Woodward and SVB all did well in barbox events. Dechaine is a big table player and he hasn't done so well. Cory has won the Open and has also done well in barbox events. Didn't those first three also cut their teeth on the barbox? Other countries do have them, just not as common as here.

Yes, here's the announcement.

The more the better, I'd say. Every 9-ball tournament on 9' tables ought to be on the Mosconi points list, within reason. Regional is fine, low added money is fine (expecting tons of added money is self-destructive, IMO).

If we could get 10 or so, it could outline as close to a pro tour as we have.

Dechaine was 2nd in the US Open 10-ball, a pro bar table event at the BCAPL National Championships, losing to Dennis Orcullo in a very close final.

I think you understand my point, though it's doubtful that you or most others would agree. I just keep seeing many of the same names at the top of the barbox events when dealing with the pros.

Does Allen Hopkins get to play without registering?

Only if they come up with a new excuse, like the dog ate his entry form.

The Tornado tournament was on bar tables. The Texas Open i think was 9 footers. Im fine w the Swanee getting points. It gets 95% of the west coast pros, 9 footers and has a biiiig strong field of 192 Players as i recall.

I agree with you, Nostroke.
There is one rub to the "Swanee" getting points for 2016, though.
The venue is not in Bellflower, it's near San Diego.

That by itself will change the "personality" of the event.
I don't think there will be as many pros there as in (recent) past years.

It will take a few years to get the event back to where it was in its heyday (2000s).
Then maybe can the "Swanee" be considered for points.

Just my opinion, folks. Don't hurt me. :)

Flyer also states it is going to be capped at a 128 entry field. Them pros better get their entries in quick :sorry:

Ok so 128 players x $80 entry fee is $10,240. Flyer says $10,000 prize fund. I don't care if the tournament is or is not added money. I guess if you can fill out 128 players without adding any money, why would you. But how can they expect players travel across the country for Mosconi Cup points and basically be playing just for points? Am I missing something?

at least swanee is on 9 foot tables..... bar table events for mosconi points is ridiculously stupid.

that's the tough part, travelling players will have to come 2nd to break even....lol

Someone give me Luke Richie's and Barry Hearn or whoever I need to talk to phone number. I'll do a non added money event here in St Louis for MC points too. And I'll do it better than most of the pool events out there.
