Washing the CB

So... Dennis posts this 225 ball run by Lee Van Corteza from the 2016 DCC 14.1 Challenge. A tremendous feat and thanks to Dennis and crew for their efforts.

But, if you watch the vid you'll see that before too long, LVC starts asking for the CB to be cleaned every rack. (Maybe even more than that.) A bit unusual.

So, what do you think? Right, wrong, excessive, OK, no biggie? (What happens when every player at every 14.1, 9ball, 10ball, 8ball, 1pocket event start asking for the CB to be cleaned every other shot, even without a huge, dyed, curly Miley Cyrus hair on the ball or a big honkin' smooch of Kamui on it?)

Personally, I think that unless there's the aforementioned Hanna Montana hair or a blood clot on the ball you should proceed. It's pool.

I was watching Mika's last minute 155 ball run the other day. He cleaned the cue ball a handful of times. It took less than 30 seconds per cleaning. Personally, when I am watching someone in the middle of a run consisting of a couple hundred balls over the course of an hour or more, I don't see a problem with adding 3-5 minutes to the duration of the attempt to clean the cue ball. I've never run near that many, but I might use the time cleaning the cue ball to calm down and gather myself for a minute, killing two birds with one stone.

I believe the cue ball should be cleaned more often to help get rid of that dreaded skid. I know sometimes a skid can be caused by a bad stroke but still...

You've complained about this before.

Do you think you could beat your high run if you cleaned the CB every rack?

Yes? Then do it.

No? Then don't whine if someone else does it.

Yeah, that's pretty excessive. Like you say, it's pool. Play.

High level players probably notice more than us Normie's
Don't bother me at all
In 3c and straight rail the cue ball will get cleaned atleast once a game

Just watched the first rack. LVC is a chalk on every shot man. Lotta chalk. Surprised he got through the rack. Out of position after his first shot. Power stroking ball 13 rather than roll up ball 12 to play for the side.
I'm here every Wednesday. Thank you.

Why is there even a discussion or outrage? Skids are very real, they depend upon your chalk(ing style). Even as bloody amateurs we clean the CB before EVERY single rack (also in 14.1). OBs before every night.
It's simply no fun having strange contacts.

Some Snooker guy though had the CB cleaned after every stroke or so. He was being warned off eventually. That's excessive.

Cheers.

If you watch a few Snooker videos of top players, they often request the CB be cleaned.
Even tho the refs already wear white Dowton Abbey Footman gloves.
They even have a little gizmo to ensure the CB is returned to exactly the same spot
from whence it came, so to speak.

Nonsense.

Precisely what direction and amount of spin in relation to the balls forward motion causes (or increases the risk of) a "skid", since you know? And, since you know, why is that amount of spin more likely to cause a "skid" that when the same spin is applied with a proper stroke?

Any true anglophile knows how to spell Downton Abbey. Agree on everything else.

I was just thinking of all the 1pocket I've played and watched -- guys go for hours, days without cleaning the CB.

Never heard the bad stroke causes skid, Lenny. What do you mean?

What I have complained about is the whole set of balls being run through the polisher every few racks so that they open up like a bag of spilt popcorn on break shots.

So keep up and stop whining about my whining.

I'm also thinking about what happens when every Tom, Dick, and Harry starts asking for the CB to be cleaned every few shots at league, money games, APA tournaments, CSI events, US Opens, state level events, and so on and so forth. Maybe all 500 guys in the DCC Bank Pool event can start doing that too.

I think it's excessive and would hate to see it become the new normal. That is all.

Sometimes, no doubt, the CB or even an OB needs to be cleaned. But if you watch the whole video -- all 225 balls of it -- what happen that run is highly unusual. I also watched the Hohmann video and he runs 155 without a single wash.

I see both sides of the argument. But the same thing happens it tennis, golf, bowling, baseball, basketball, football, etc. The ball gets cleaned or replaced often.

I see nothing wrong if someone wants cueball cleaned. Once in a rack is okay. I would not do it so often but sometimes if weather is humid I clean it almost as often. Normally one or two times per 100 points.
