Gold Crown IV Cushions/Replacements

I think it's really hard to tell whether a cushion is junk until it's been on the table for 10 years.

About 20 years ago four pool halls opened in this area all with GC IIIs. Within about 5 years the cushions started to go bad, beginning with deadish and going all the way to hard as a rock. Really, like pottery.

One room that had 24 tables gradually had to replace 40 to 60 cushion sections. I suppose they should have replaced all of the cushions on each table together but they only did what they had to do.

The cushions were not covered by any kind of warranty.

One of the rooms is phasing in European rubber now on their GC IIIs because they don't want any more surprises.

Keep this in mind when making your decisions.

Bob;

just to keep the context straight I think when quoting me you should not have snipped the part where I said: "according to Mark Gregory and Glen". ;)

And for the record, since I got bit twice by brunswick superspeeds, I personally, will not be in any hurry to ever get another set, especially if they are still produced in China.

My Artemis IC's are working great and, hopefully, just like the old time brunswick quality rubber could, these will outlast me. :)

I just got off the phone with my mechanic. He is from the Indy area, used to work at Orner Billiards. He is a recognized expert according to various sources.

His response was that the Brunswick SuperSpeed cushions were okay but he would shy away from them due to so much inconsistency over the last several years. He said he would recommend Artemis. Plus he said Mueller's has been making a pretty decent cushion that is more economical and yet still of high quality.

He is working me up an estimate.

If done right, these will be the last cushions you will buy for decades. With that in mind, spend the money a get the Artemis. It will only give you quality and years. Mueller may have a more economical cushion, but you might have inconsistencies and/or replacement factors later on.

UPDATE.......8 March 2016

This work is being done tomorrow, 9 March. My mechanic said he checked into this issue further and he is quite confident the Brunswick SuperSpeed cushions are fine now. Plus Nick Varner told me the other day to absolutely go with the SuperSpeeds. So, that's the road where we are headed.

Looking forward to having this done. Curious to see if the table will play a little different. Plus it will be a good thing to have 4.5 inch pockets as compared to 5 inch pockets. With the 5 inch buckets to a certain extent you are almost fooling yourself.

New English Green Simonis 860 is going to be installed as well. Nothing like new cloth!

Does your mechanics first name start with Jack?

Negatori on that, good buddy, 10-4.

Ok, I understand now, you're not really getting the rails rebuilt, just having new cushions installed and pockets tightened up....just make sure the pocket miter angles in the corner pockets are the same on both sides because the factory angles don't match on both sides.

Work is done, new cloth, new SuperSpeed cushions, and tighter pockets. I've gone from 5" buckets to 4.25 pockets. Played about an hour, ran out a couple of times. Missed a couple of shots due to the tighter pockets also. My speed was off on a couple of shots as I was short of the target. Guess I assumed the table would be a little faster with brand new 860.

Overall, its all good.

Now see if you can bank the cue ball 9 rails around the table and 5 times down and back the length of it.

Brunswick rails have a lifetime warranty. However Brunswick does everything possible to unacommodate the process and discourage the transition.

So, are they some kinda trickshots I haven't seen yet? Or are they a dig on Brunswick because its not a Diamond OR a dig at the mechanic since it isn't you? If I had to guess id say both????

I took his comment more to mean that this is what you can expect with new simonis 860 and good rails. In fact, Glen did that exact test on my GC1 after completing it a couple of years ago..

Apparently he's done so many of these that he knows how many rails the cue ball can travel both up and back and around the table.

Yeah I'm mean no doubt he knows his stuff. Possibly I jumped the gun, but I based my comment only on countless previous threads. Truthfully I have no experience / problem with Glen but I don't like seeing Brunswicks bashed as I believe they can play equal or better than any table out there that's all.

My table is a GC1.

I don't think Glen is a GC basher at all.

He's posted an awful lot about GC's he's worked on. He made mine fantastic.

Would I be correct in my thinking here?

I went from 5 inch pockets to 4.25 inch pockets. While the Simonis 860 cloth is fairly new the balls will have a tendency to "slide" into the pockets. After the cloth gets a little wear to it the table is going to play a little tougher since the balls wont be sliding into the pockets.

I assume the above is true to a small extent. Am I right or wrong?

Correct, pocketing will become harder...though the position will become easier when the slide goes away.

I have noticed that I am struggling big time with cut shots down the rails. Both the side rails and end rails. There are times when I look away because I know I made the shot only to finally realize it didn't go in.

I guess this is something I need to practice on. Its 7:15 in the morning and I might as well head that way as I probably wont get much chance to play later in the day today.

Freeze and finish the shot without looking away.

I do my best practice @ 4:00 am. It is about the only time I have to myself.

IMO: This is because of the slide in the cloth as well. When the cue ball contacts the edge of the object ball it pushes it towards the rail. Normally, on broken in cloth, the object ball is moving fairly slow and the friction makes the ball roll almost immediately. On new cloth, the object ball will slide (towards the rail) and friction takes over later. I will guess when you miss these shots it appears that you are under cutting them. Is that the case? Just play through it until the cloth is broken in. It will be fine soon.
