Is Southwest the best?

there is also a diff b/t a great cuemaker/s that can make a well educated and experienced player who all know exactly what they want in a cue looking for gernerally withing the confines of how said cue maker executes said work.....

and people who trade items online who are still not even sure where or what there game is going or even is and their stroke is changing every year and a half......saying they dont like something.

thats the rub on some of the "subjectivity"

i'm sure they can tailor a cue as opposed to just trying till ya find one ya like from dealers :) you may wait a minute...or 5 lol

just dont want people to confuse somethings, to mean the other.

at the end of the day....i can not honestly tell someone TO NOT BUY ONE....if someone asks if its a bad idea to buy one....i would say IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT....ITS A GREAT IDEA......but dont go pissing away money you really need for a luxury item ladies and gents. Luxuries are meant for those that can afford them.

I've never owned one but have tried out quite a few and never thought they were anything special. They all were well made, but I never would have bought any of the ones I've tried, even if the price was significantly lower.

Everybody has their own tastes and preferences and I'm not knocking them. I'm just saying I haven't found one that beats what I prefer in a playing cue that suits me.

My two cents, agree with many here that there is not a "Best" cue etc and everyone has an opinion, custom, production cues etc. I've had lots of production cues and lots of custom cues. I owned a SW, it was a 1997 I purchased on the 2nd hand market and one of the cues I regret selling. I did put my name on their list back in Sept of 2004, Laurie has been great about staying in touch and I'll be putting my order in anytime now. There is no upfront cost for putting your name on their list so nothing loss in waiting it out. Between the one I had, hitting some of my friends SW I would say they played great, had a nice hit and nice feel. If nothing else with a SW it is one cue that you probably won't loose money on if you end up selling it. Not a ton of cues out there you can pick up and re-coop your cost out of these days.

Until you own one you will have to trust some one else's personal opinion.

They don't have 13 year waiting list for no reason at all.

I like their hit but dislike the butt section design on 99% of them. That being said I would never wait 10-13 years on a custom cue builder even if Jesus were building the cue.

I have never found their designs appealing. To me, they all look too similar. There is nothing wrong with them, they just aren't my cup of tea.

I feel the same.

It is very low on my priority list to own one.

Great cue, great maker, no doubt.

But they don't turn my crank. That's all.

Most of the top pro's out there are playing with production cues like Predator, OB, Lucasi, Mezz, Meucci.

It says a lot that South West has more pro players using (and winning with) their cues than any other small shop/custom maker.

Any other custom maker may have one or two pro players using and representing their cues (if they're lucky).

How many top pro's are playing with a boar, a szamboti, a tascarella, a hercek, a lambros, etc? 1 or 2 maybe? How many top pro's are using South Wests? 15-20? When many of the best in the world are reaching for one particular brand, there may be something behind it.

I believe those numbers to be highly inaccurate in a room filled with 64, 128 or > players. I remember hearing about how Dennis Orcullo acquired his sponsorship with Tiger. He was playing with a Southwest that he absolutely loved and low and behold, the nose warped when he brought it to the US. He struggled for a while with his game and to find something that felt conformable to him. At some point he ran into the guys at the Tiger booth, picked up a cue and loved it... he also went on to win that tournament and a sponsorship package.

In any case, a player will adjust to whatever he's holding but the Southwest cues do have some very good attributes. It's a big pin cue which I happen to believe is the only way a pool cue should be made (3/8x10, 3/8x11, radial).

I've hit with one and did like it but I'm not waiting a decade for a cue.

It may be for some, but for me, no it is not.

Well - I have an old JF Southwest and I have got a couple new ones that I flipped immediately.

I will say that I have never heard of Southwest NOT delivering on their promise of a cue. THAT alone makes them one of the best. While the delivery seems, and is a long time, they don't take a deposit. Because they don't take a deposit is my opinion of why so many are flipped and the wait is so long.

All too often, cue makers do not.

Best of rolls to all,

Ken
