You need to work on your math skills. This would make it over 300% more popular.
And it probably has a lot to do when (dates) the tournaments take place along with the popularity of the game.

We were both wrong
To calculate the percentage increase: First: work out the difference (increase) between the two numbers you are comparing. Then: divide the increase by the original number and multiply the answer by 100. If your answer is a negative number then this is a percentage decrease.
Men's 8 ball singles vs. Men's 9 ball singles
1070-311= 759
1070/759= 1.409749670619236
1.41*100= 141%
I did the division wrong the first time.
Close but you have to divide the difference by the 9-ball total
(759 / 311) * 100 = 244% increase
Is increase and 'more popular' (from Masseyman original post) the same thing?
So annoyed just got off the phone with CSI BCAPL apparently I missed the late deadline. I'm an idiot - forgot to register. Argh. Might still drive down there for the mini-tourneys and the vibes ( 4 hr drive for me from LA ). Sorry don't mean to steal the thread.
Here's an update as of July 11.

It will be interesting to see how some of the players react to the changes in division entries. An increase in the gold / advanced player division. 2015 had 111 entries. This year it's 352. Last year, the platinum / masters had 28 players. This year 152. The silver / open drops from 884 down to 352. The bronze / leisure goes from 188 down to 152. It will be interesting to see the prize fund distribution.
Will also find it interesting to see how many of the super seniors who played last year are returning this year. I'm sure it's not broken down. It will be sad if some of them are driven off by the new division and / or Fargo Rate. I sure thought about it!

I'm one of the super seniors that is not going. They expect that I should play like I did 30 years ago. Not happening. See how it goes and maybe next year if they make some adjustments.
I called their office a few times. Nobody down there seems to know anything about the minis. They are like "show up, someone will know something".Don't be so sure you can play in the mini's

In my opinion unless changes are made I think you will see a serious decrease in singles participation in coming years. I don't think increasing the amount of dead money in the gold and platinum divisions is a recipe for growth.
There needs to be an incentive to achieve a fargo rating which will place you in a higher division, in the current state this is not the case. A possible solution for this might be to split the divisions 15/30/40 (Platinum/Gold/Silver) but divide the prize fund equally between the three divisions. This would create a situation where by the higher level you achieve the less competitors there are for an equal prize. Definitely not an easy problem to solve for sure.
I will be there competing in my first and very likely my last BCA nationals representing the dead money in Platinum division lol.

Why should the prize money be equal if the field size is not equal? So there is no incentive for getting better? To be blunt, that is just dumb
I dont understand all of the people bickering and complaining about Fargo rated/matched tournaments before you even play in the tournament. We had the same thing going on up here before our BCAPL state tournament. At the end of the day when it was over things went well, people had a good time, and there were very few legitimate complaints. Its possible that there are going to be a handful of underrated players sneaking by under the radar but its going to be far less than years previous. Just go play, shoot tough and have a good time then see where the chips fall.
I think you misinterpreted this, the idea is to add to the higher divisions by taking from the lower. This suggestion comes from what I have seen work at golf tournaments. Prizes are equal or in some cases better in the more skilled flights even though the field is normally smaller. The goal is to promote people improving and help eliminate sandbagging.
There is a big difference between a 527 player and a 611 player, for example.
