Is Max Eberle as big as a goof as I now think?

Actually...

I sure hope you realize there's a difference between not believing everything you read/hear in the news vs not believing the earth is round.

Only one of them makes you an idiot.

Everyone keeps saying that Max is an idiot for not believing the Earth is round. But Max actually thinks the Earth is round he thinks it's not spherical so using the wrong terminology actually makes you guys look stupid too

So Max thinks the earth is spheroidal rather than spherical?
The earth does bulge at the equator....if that's what he means...
...then why didn't he say so?

Max, you're a member here....speak up.

Well, hey, if you want to get technical the earth is an oblate spheroid.

Well, I just watched Max on a UTube interview....he says the earth is flat....
....he says people are running 'around' trying to prove him wrong.

He feels we never went to the moon, and the photos of the earth taken from space are fake.

Don't understand why some people feel Max is nuts when there are a large group of very intelligent people who believe the moon landing was faked, Elvis is still alive and the Earth and the universe we live in are only six thousand years old. Perhaps there are more crazy people than we'd care to admit!

Lyn

It is called bias. It negatively affects everyone's intelligence, some people far more than others. In the real world you are working with your effective intelligence, which is what you net after you take your potential intelligence (your IQ) minus however much of your IQ you "lose" because of your biases. And we all have biases, but some people are affected to a very minor degree by their biases and also don't have very many of them, and others are very greatly affected by their biases and have tons and tons of them. A person with a very high IQ and a lot of bias has no more effective intelligence than someone with a very low IQ and very little bias. They are effectively equally dumb.

You ever notice that the guys that have a really way out there belief (like a flat earth) very rarely have just that one nutty belief? They usually have several or many nutty beliefs. The reason is because of bias--a very particular bias. They have a core fundamental belief that there are mass movements of people who are conspiring to hide information so as to better control people. This core belief leads to a blindly bias that no longer allows them them to see reality in many things.

This core belief is a coping mechanism for feeling like you lack control in your life, that you should have and would have accomplished more if only you didn't have all these people conspiring to control you and/or mislead you and/or withhold information. It isn't really a logical belief, but most coping beliefs aren't. It is the mind's way of absolving you of any responsibility for your own destiny instead of having to accept and deal with the fact that we do have a lot of control of our destiny and are therefore largely responsible for our own successes and failures.

..................
Huh?

I will rephrase what he wrote a different way. It is one thing to not just blindly accept things without evidence or proof. It is quite another to refuse to believe something that has been proven to be true or that 99% of the evidence supports, or even worse than that, to believe something that is obviously untrue, has been proven to be untrue, or that 99% of the evidence opposes. The first is called being an independent thinker, and having a critical mind. That is a good thing. The second is called being a dumb a$$ with no sense, no logic, no intelligence, and a lot of blinding bias. That is a bad thing.

Thanks. Said it much better.

I got curious and read up a bit on Flat-Earther`s and it`s kinda neat.

I wouldn`t mind taking a stab at defending the point.

What the defense of the claim that the earth is flat amounts to in the end is the systematic discounting of all evidence to the contrary, which means that you'll accept no evidence that could show the claim to be wrong. The problem is that if you'll accept no evidence that could show an empirical claim to be wrong, then there is no reason for you to believe the claim.

Thanks for more laughs guys. I guess it makes sense that flat earth would have to be debated in this day and age on a pool forum, lol. In the pool room, facts and evidence are optional.

Poolplaya9 - great armchair psychology re coping mechanisms. I have no idea if you are right, but it sure sounds good.

BTW, the earth isn't just flat, it is surrounded by a huge ice wall to keep the water in, goes the theory.

The ice wall is my favorite part! :grin-square:

lol I know. Never mind the fact that you can 1. take a flight across the antarctic. 2. If you have enough money, you can literally go into space.

My favorite is this argument:

The earth is 24,901 miles in circumference and this guy wants to see a visible curve in 16 miles... lol wow

The arc of 16 miles is about 10'. So he's trying to see the distance of 10' in a photo taken so far away that you can barely see sky scrapers. Just amazing.

We May Soon Find Out...

For those of you who can't think straight because you are spinning around at ~1000 miles per hour on a ball, we may find out soon enough how much curvature, if any, the earth really has.

This project should be interesting and should put a nail in the coffin of this matter.

There are people out there that are conducting "tests" to attempt to figure out if what they've always been taught really jives with what they can test for themselves.

The video below was a recent test to demonstrate that things that we are not supposed to be able to see, because they should be below the horizon due to the curvature, can indeed be seen and they are not a mirage.

As for the exact shape of the earth, I am not sure. But I do know that it is NOT what has been described to us in school, by NASA, etc.

Check out the map of the United Nations (attached). Curious how Australia is on the opposite "side" of South America and if you look on Flightradar24, you NEVER see any direct flights between these two locations. Yes, I check very often and I have never seen a plane traveling this route, ever.

If anyone wants to actually start investigating the arguments for themselves, check out the book titled: The Greatest Lie on Earth: Proof That Our World Is Not a Moving Globe

Here some math for you.

The distance between Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town is 3768 miles, and the distance from New York to London is 3470 miles.

If the disc theory was correct, it would be something like 5x as far between the Southern Hemisphere cities, since you'd have to traverse the two points further from the center of the disc (ie the North Pole).

Don't let this romanticized fantasy of being the "rare intellectual" who is fighting the "powers that be", cloud your common sense.

I have made no conclusions. The UN map/flag is real. I don't see any flights that go direct between those two points. I will wait until the Force The Line project is complete.

EDIT: I should point out that the UN map/flag and the Flightradar24 flights are just something I noticed. I haven't heard anyone make a solid conclusion on those two things.
