$2000 Bank Bend Challenge

No I can't provide any evidence. Just my impression. I've lurked here for a while before I joined and developed some general perceptions of people. If that's not true, then fine.

Personally, I agree with you that if your setup forces more bending than required then not paying up is really just nitpicking, but more than one person has questioned the legitimacy of your video, and you've removed it so that no one can scrutinize it. People are saying the ball practically did a masse off the cushion, you don't know how you did it, and you basically just did it by accident after just shooting randomly for a bit. I've been playing for 30 years and I've never done or seen anything even remotely similar to that, but for you it just happened, apparently because you willed it. By your own admission you don't know how, so how is this any different than any other shot you and everyone else takes every day? If it's as easy as just "trying" randomly, then it should happen in games randomly too, but it never happens as described.

So I'm just telling you it looks a little fishy and will probably look that way to a lot of folks. If it's legitimate, it's a shame that you wouldn't share it so we can figure out just how the heck it happened.

I'm ok if you think it's fake. It's not fake but to make everyone feel better, I'll just say it was fake. Does that make everyone happy? I'm not sure what to do, I know I cannot win from here... and I'm ok with being an asshole or being disliked. So, it is what it is. It's fake. Spielberg helped me.

Aside from your whole post being hogwash, this is seriously making me laugh out loud. I'm not sure how many times I have to tell you. I've been direct, I've been sarcastic, I'm not sure what else you want from me.. sperm samples? lol I really could care less what you think of me. It's just funny. The funny part is, I don't care what you think. If you want to think I'm a liar, go for it. I really don't care.

Hogwash it may be. However, can you please direct me to a single post in which you have directly said the video was not edited?

If someone scams money from me and donates it to charity, or even scams me into donating to charity when I was not intending to, is that not "ripping me off"? I agree its not ripping me off for the person's own personal gain, but I'm not sure it is not ripping them off.

Having gone through this thread at some length, here is my theory about this whole deal:

1. Cleary has a beef with Dr. Dave.
2. Cleary believes that the science guys (or at least these science guys) won't accept things that are not in accordance with their own views and demand proof that is impossible.
3. Accordingly, he believes that the whole challenge was bogus because even if done properly they would not believe it and therefore would not pay.
4. To prove his theory, he created a video that he thought complied with the rules (except that he did something, like maybe edited it to combine a bank shot and a masse on the 9, as I suggested days ago).
5. He refuses to directly answer the question about editing the video because he draws some line in this own mind about creating the video and actually lying about editing (as opposed to answering a ton of questions in a way that might make you think he has denied editing, which he has not).
6. Cleary figured he could trap Dave into paying (or better yet into reneging on the proposition), because Dave said he would pay if you complied with the rules.
7. Because Cleary wants to prove his point and stick it to them, and not personally profit, he really would have donated the money to charity.
8. Cleary made a mistake in not complying with the details of the proposition. If you are going to use a very technical argument to say the other guy should pay even if it might be a fake, you'd better make sure you get it right.

Of course, all of this is just a theory.

I have another theory, that does not really contradict yours:

1. Dr. Dave made some statements about bending banks, that were wrong.
2. This was rather embarrasing.
3. To divert attention from this, he created a bank challenge that he allready knew would be impossible to beat. This would vindicate his earlier view. Now he had proof that nobody could bend the ball a significant (ridiculous) amount. Of course nobody had claimed these kinds of extreme results, so the whole thing was a giant strawman.
4. The boring and meticulous setup, may or may not have been designed to discourage people (or could be just their scientific background showing itself), but in the end that didn't matter, because they allready knew it was impossible.
5. I don't think it's possible to to beat this challenge without a cheat (they allready experimented and knew that), so they are understandably sceptical of Clearys video.
6. When you looked at Clearys video, it became obvious how ludicrous the challenge was. Maybe that was his intention. In that case I salute him. I have NEVER, EVER seen an object ball act like that, in 15 years of intense daily play and a month in on-and-off experimentation with these kinds of shots. When even Clearys bend wasn't enough...Well..

Maybe this place has made me too cynical for my own good.:frown:

Good summary. But you've got to admit, it's a righteous cause. Who better to attack than Bob Jewett and Dr. Dave, coupla losers who've never done anything for pool. Not to mention that "science," I mean what good has that ever done for anyone.

It's possible you have some sort of learning disability and rather than keep going back and forth with you, i'll just stop responding.

cleary,
Are you talented enough to edit a video like the one in question -- well enough that a layman would not be able to identify the editing?

It's obvious you're a talented video guy so what's with all the feux outrage? You should take it as a compliment that you are being held to a higher standard than the rest of us.

The thing is, nothing ever really goes away on the interwebz. That's why we should all be careful in what we say and do here. The web remembers.

When I run for president, please reference this thread as to why I'm a bad choice.

It is a compliment and I've started to embrace it. I've said many times that it's fake. I've also said it's real and I've said I'm a liar. Who the hell knows?

You previously said that if you were to create a fake video that you would lie about it being fake. Couple that with your removal of the video to prevent further studying of it creates one thing. A conspiracy that you faked it. And you've done nothing to quell the doubt surrounding the statements you've made.

It is possible that you don't know how to answer a direct question with a yes or no, and truly think that all of the dancing around you did amounts to an answer of "no, I did not edit it". If that's the case, then I would understand your frustration. And you could clarify (you know, for those like me with learning disabilities) by actually saying the words.

Another possibility is that I actually missed a post in which you did just that, which I why I asked you to point it out to me.

It is also possible that you know exactly what you are saying and not saying, and for whatever reason refuse to directly answer the question.

I prefer the fake video to beat a fake challenge theory.

Truth be told, I'm just not an honest person. I'm not the world champion that I've claimed either.
