I have not seen a laminated Snooker "shaft" yet.

But there are cue builders that do specially crafted Snooker "shafts" to even have less deflection. They go as low as 8mm (9mm is the "standard").

BTW, it's not really the taper per se but that they have much less mass (no huge hunk of plastic, very small ferrule, very small tip with slim as in low height leather tip) and due to the smaller diameter are more flexible.

Essentially what the Pool guys have just recently figured out ;)



Again, LD is not about the lamination.

I should be receiving my new shaft that Scot Sherbine is making for me sometime within the next week, or so.

It is a solid maple shaft that is 14mm at the tip and has a 12" pro taper and 1' ferrule.

Anybody want to guess how much it is going to deflect?

It is not. Lamination has nothing to do with ld or hd. It's a quality control technique nothing more

Quite a lot, I would imagine. I think the ferrule material has some impact as well. I have two 13mm shafts with equally long ferrules/tapers and their deflection characteristics are quite different, mainly because one has denser wood and a heavier ferrule (I think). I really haven't spent a lot of time trying to figure it out. One shaft I can use, the other I struggle to adapt to. It stays in the case.

At least your ferrule isn't 1 1/2 inches, like a Meucci used to have.

After shooting tens and tens of shots the solid maple pool shafts had lower deflection.
This is of course anecdotal, just tried to be as consistent as I could.
It would be interesting to see what a mechanical arm says about this.
 
My snooker cue deflects quite a bit. But snooker is so different when it comes to how spin is used etc, that it doesn't come up a whole lot, anyway. The cloth is so heavy that swerve effects come in quite a bit, and the nap just makes sidespin a lot more complicated. Not sure if I would ever want an ld snooker cue. I'd imagine it would feel quite a bit different. I don't like my Predator Z2 as a snooker cue, although it is (barely) possible to play a decent game with. Subjectively I feel like it deflects less than my snooker cue, but I haven't actually measured. I do have a somewhat more front heavy snooker cue than maybe most players? It's close to 10mm and the ferrule looks to be about 1-2 mm longer than most.
 
Snooker cues have wide variety of deflection. I play normally my falcon butt with z2 shaft, but all others here(Oulu,Finland) play Parrish or similar snooker cue. I tested them all and more than half is LDish. Some have more squirt than my Z2 but not too many.

I like how Z2 deflects it have less squirt than my solid maple shaft on poolballs but not too much. I ordered It maybe two years ago and made hundred point break second time I played with it and made many afterwards. Never learned snooker cue so fast. :eek:

edit: Just my opinion that snooker should always play with Elkmaster. I think(my experience) all other tips make inconsistent deflection.

Many of the greats did and if the on gong hard maple only versus LD shaft debate was not discussed constantly on this forum there would be far fewer posts. Nothing seems to heat folks up as much as this topic.

Any way I think Efren, Bustamanti, Alcano and many others use regular maple shafts.
Is one shaft really that much better then another, ya got me. Do many other top tier players use LD shafts, they sure do. Heck, we can't even agree on the definition of low deflection shafts. I find that that funny!

No money in pro pool leaves the pros grabbing for sponsorship money, I don't blame them, they got bills and have to live. So they use what ever shaft their sponsor wants them to use.

Cues, shafts and tips do not make great pool players, but we all benefit from good quality. It is and never has been a thing where who ever has the best equipment wins and we can't even agree or define the best pool equipment. It is and always has been who plays the best.

Part of the appeal of solid shafts for the players in Asia is the relative humidity, resulting in more force necessary to get the cue ball going long distances. This is part of the insistence for stiff, solid shafts, especially in the case of Ko Pin Yi.

I know Shane uses a cuetec now but didnt he use a regular shaft during his rise to fame from 2007 - 2010 with his Joss or his mom's Schon?
