First of all I am both friend and fan of Johnny's . The basis of my post is that he still has fire in the tank . Last week going straight through on the winners side winning against the likes of Robb Saez , Jeremy Jones and Jason Klatt. As stated before there is great similarity between the Ryder Cup in Golf and the Mosconi Cup in Pool. How you may ask ? The chemistry and make up of the team. Tiger Woods was a great Golfer but the last two USA Ryder Cup Victories did. not have him playing on the team. Certain personalities and character can and does frequently cause problems and often times it is behind the scenes , covered up and is not totally made public. A team needs a mix of youthful exuberant talent but just as important is experience , success and years of great play. I believe Johnny's record speaks for itself . Johnny's choice of family as opposed to playing in all the qualifiers this year in no way reflects his longstanding passion for the Mosconi Cup. In my personal conversations at the last two US Opens with very prominate members of European Mosconi Cup teams I don't think you will find any American player more respected for his passion , ability and who brings to the table more concern from his European opponents than Johnny . Not to mention the infectious positive impact he brings to the team..Inquire for yourself

The interesting thing is that even when Tiger was God of Golf, he had a losing record in the Ryder Cup. He was never a great player for Team USA, for whatever reason.

Individual greats do not always make the best team players in these kinds of events. Shane has had his share of Mosconi difficulties, despite being the best American player. Whereas guys like Rodney Morris have a great Mosconi record. For whatever reason, people often play differently in these kinds of events than they do as individuals. Which is why captains having optional picks is so important to building a good team.

I would personally love to see Johnny on the team again this year.

Johnny has had his opportunities in the Mosconi Cup. They have been unsuccessful. And it's nice he chose family over trying to qualify but that doesn't give him a free pass.

Watchez perhaps you should do your due diligence research prior to posting his record 18 appearances have not resulted in failure as well his last visit to Europe had him fanning the flame coming from 3 games down to Broyles or one of the other Euros to leave victory in the hands of two Americans who failed to deliver. With all due respect do your research please!!!

I think the chance of Mark picking a player that didn't put the time, money, travel and effort in to playing in the qualifying events is close to zero.

I would be very surprised if he just doesn't pick the top 5 points leaders just like he did last year.

Who do you suggest should be staying home to put Archer in the team?
Don't argue solely why he deserves to be on the team, argue why he should be pick over others. Others deserve to be on the team, too.
And the team player stuff is a myth. He did well one year leading the team and bad the year after when he was captain-player. So there's no warranty for it to work next time.

Perhaps Johnny should stay home with his family then

How does Johnny stand with Matchroom?

Aside from playing, how about future non-playing team captain?

Johnny A's time has come and gone. If he was 5th or 6th in MC points I could see picking him, but he didn't even try. Johnnyt

... guys like Rodney Morris have a great Mosconi record. ....

Morris used to have a great Mosconi record, but not any more. His record is bifurcated:

First 4 appearances: 7-0 singles, 7-3 doubles, 2-0 trebles, 2-0 teams, 18-3 total (winning percentage of 86%)

Last 5 appearances: 2-8 singles, 4-12 doubles, 1-4 teams, 7-24 total (23%)

All 9 appearances: 9-8 singles, 11-15 doubles, 2-0 trebles, 3-4 teams, 25-27 total (48%)

I already answered your question if you would read the post any of them except Rodney who has the most experience and success of all the rest

Johnny's game is perfectly suited for the pressure cooker that is the Mosconi Cup. The reason the U.S. has struggled for years is exactly because we don't have more players that play like Archer.

How does he play? He's a grinder. He's meticulous, and sometimes maybe even a bit boring to watch because he's so mechanical. But his game holds up under pressure and that's what you need in the Mosconi Cup.

Less is more in this environment -- think Darren Appleton. Save the long loopy strokes for the action room (Van Boening). If you're not rock solid in your stance it will bite you before it's over (Dechaine). Fast and loose looks good in a race to 21 but not at the Mosconi. (Strickland).

Of course Archer doesn't deserve to be on the team this year but maybe this year's team could learn a thing or two about how to win by paying attention to his game.

When in comes to the Mosconi Cup -- it's not about how good your A game is, it's about how bad can your B game be. Archer's B game is pretty solid.

Johnny has been on the Mosconi Cup team 17 times (1997-2013).

His record is 18-13 singles, 26-23 doubles, 0-2 trebles, 5-4 teams, 49-42 total ( winning percentage of 54%)

In his 2012 appearance, he was 6-0. In his 2013 appearance (his most recent), he was 0-4.

I would have to agree that even though I love watching Johnny play and he is one that I still follow at times, Needs to only be there for support.

The Tiger woods comparison is the right one. Like why I am a better cash player than I am a tournament player. I hope that he can help give the team advice and knowledge so that they bring it home.

If Johnny Archer committed himself to the game and professional pool and was still winning and proving himself to be a top player in the USA he would still be making the team.

How old is Johnny? Staying at home and hanging out with the family is not something most working professionals can expect to do in any walk of life. If Johnny retired young to hang out with his family so be it but you cannot have your cake and eat it too. You are either a professional pool player still committing yourself to pool as a job, or you are retired. Retired pool players should not be considered for the Mosconi Cup at all.

First off, fat Albert, it's good to hear you are friends with JA.
I've heard he's a great guy.

At the beginning of the year, I remember JA calling out some
fellow pro players for not having the passion to enter tournaments
en route to getting on the MC team.

It takes more than passion to play good pool.

I believe the takeaway there was he was really trying to get on the team.
Obviously, despite his efforts, he didn't quite get there.
Let's face it, he's still a great guy I'm sure, but his pool game is no longer where it was.

JA on the U.S. MC team? No way.

I would rather see JA handle his pool business for the benefit of the industry and
take care of his family and help to ensure he raises good citizens.

Everybody has bad years but I think his overall winning percentage and no lose year speaks of his excellence in this venue
