Johnny Archer: can make impact on Mosconi Cup Team

Everybody has bad years but I think his overall winning percentage and no lose year speaks of his excellence in this venue

His unwillingness to participate in the required tournaments speaks of his true desire to be on MC.

Do the work!
Jason

sorry, but he got run over the last time he was in the MC (as did the rest of HIS team). not sure how you gather that he does such a great job of motivating the guys when he's at the MC. i know that's just looking at one year, but that's also the most recent time he's been in the MC. so it's showing what his current game does when subjected to the MC pressure. i'm not saying our other guys have a better chance, but it's definitely time to see what our younger talent can do when they are on the big stage.

Watchez perhaps you should do your due diligence research prior to posting his record 18 appearances have not resulted in failure as well his last visit to Europe had him fanning the flame coming from 3 games down to Broyles or one of the other Euros to leave victory in the hands of two Americans who failed to deliver. With all due respect do your research please!!!

How did he do in the last Mosconi Cup he played in Las Vegas?

Do your research please!!!

Love JA and will always be a fan--he's on the pantheon of the pool gods...that said, he's had his chances and is not in the top 5 this year. His experience and knowledge (and the respect his team mates always have for him) is valuable, but we need firepower more than player/coaches. IMHO, he tends to over coach a tad; I've seen him talk SVB into shooting a shot differently, and even though it was sound advice, it can rattle a AAA player to have a HOFer looking over his shoulder on every shot. There are a couple on the top 5 who've been challenged nerve-wise in previous outings, and that concerns me...that said what's fair is fair. I'll give Mark Wilson benefit of the doubt that he'll crack the code on that this year, if anyone can he will.

Azb... where people believe Johnny Archer can't play good and Chezka plays great. It's comical!

That's like determining how good Shane is based only on his last match with Dechaine.

How did any of Team USA do that year? If you hold that year against Johnny then hold it against all of them.

How did Johnny do the year before that?

It's like Basement Dweller said, Johnny won't be there this year but he would be an asset if he were.

Shane is a AAA player and Johnny is a hof'er LMAO. Shane could give a shit about Johnny's play.

No comment about who should or shouldn't be on Mosconi team...

but let's put some things in perspective

SVB played 227 games of 9-Ball to win the US Open. That's one tournament.

A player in MC plays maybe 16 games of singles and maybe 24 games of scotch doubles (each player shooting the equivalent of 12 games worth)

That's 227 games SVB in US Open <===> 28 games in one year of MC

Assessing a top players performance by a year's MC results is like:

-- determining whether a city is WINDY or RAINY from a weekend visit
-- determining whether a football team has a better passing or running game by a single 40-yard drive
-- determining a player's batting average from a 3-game series

Be careful. You may decide hitting on 19 or splitting your 10s is great blackjack strategy...

If Johnny Archer committed himself to the game and professional pool and was still winning and proving himself to be a top player in the USA he would still be making the team.

How old is Johnny? Staying at home and hanging out with the family is not something most working professionals can expect to do in any walk of life. If Johnny retired young to hang out with his family so be it but you cannot have your cake and eat it too. You are either a professional pool player still committing yourself to pool as a job, or you are retired. Retired pool players should not be considered for the Mosconi Cup at all.

Again you did not respond to the post Jack Nickalaus missed many tournaments to watch kids and grandkids . If you play played in every qualifier you basically could not make money with the cost of travel and expenses . The only ones that did had sponsors they did not make money

So.....the more tournaments you play the more $$$ you lose? Why would you play ANY? Or do you already know ahead of time if you'll win or lose?

Come back to earth please

Johnny Archer leading the USA against a Europe team led by Daz... would be great!

To answer your question as to why would people play any tournaments when they know the more you play the more you lose... just look at the casino floor and you will see that there are plenty of people who play in spite of knowing they will lose money in the long run. The entertainment and the hope to beat the odds keep them coming back for more.

Unlike the casino junkies Johnny and Jack can and have made money playing tournaments though. But with travel expenses vs payouts, many are still not worth going to.

And like I said, if he deserved to be on the team he would win enough $

Johnny did not even do well in the qualifiers he "did" play in. There are many people on the points list that played a small number of events and ended up with more points than Archer.

Archer quit playing professional pool, that was his choice and he made it.

But with travel expenses vs payouts, many are still not worth going to.

There is money in most of the major events for the top players. Johnny does not go because Johnny knows he is an underdog against world class fields today. He is not good enough to compete at a level that makes the events profitable. You can see that even in this years US Open, Archer is in over his head in a field like that. There are 30+ guys that flat out play better than Archer in an event like that these days, when he runs into one of those guys he is a "clear" underdog and he loses.

I think most of us would love to see Johnny make another Mosconi Cup appearance. That being said in fairness it shouldn't just be gifted to him either. According to Matchroom Johnny is currently in 32nd with 29 points, Oscar is sitting in 5th with 190 points. That is a pretty big gap.

It looks like Johnny just played east coast tourneys and if he would have strung together some high finishes I think he may have gotten Mark Wilson's attention. It looks like his highest Mosconi Cup ranking points event was Turning Stone where he finished 13th. That just isn't anywhere close enough to warrant an invite.
