Pocket Billiards Terms

Wire - there's often a string w/ balls above the table used to keep score, but "the wire" typically refers to a handicap in which the stronger player gives games in a set aka "2 on the wire" in a race to 7 means that the player getting the spot only needs to win 5 games (because he's been given "2 on the wire")
Weight - handicap
Spot - handicap
Race - "race to x" means that the winner is the first who reaches x number of wins
Straight Up = even game, no handicaps

Thank You for an intelligent answer.

Yummy!

All of those terms are for gambling and have nothing to do with playing a real game of competitive pocket billiards.

Why has gambling become synonymous with Pool?

No wonder City Councils do not want a "Pool Hall" in their cities.

I have played in tournaments where the players that were masters and above spotted everyone else a game. Also I have played a handicap league where we spotted balls in a league that is added up by total points. What is so wrong with gambling? Casinos get all sorts of players. It isn't bad to get into as many different personalities as possibles. I will promise you this no matter what sport if you put money down you will get the other guys best game. I come from a place where we pretty much bet money on everything. We play paper/rock/scissors a few times a week at work for sodas. It just makes things a little more exciting and interesting when there is something at risk. Everyone sees things differently in the gambling world though so I see your point. I am just the wrong person to read this subject because I love it when things are a bit more exciting.

Skins is a term for gambling on golf.
?????

There is an organized, sanctioned, professional Skins Game played by the top golfers in the world.
Where?
There's No Official Gambling going on in this or any other golfing event.
Please show me where the Skins Golf Game has any gambling.
Also, There is No Offical Gambling going on in any Official Cue Sports Event.

I have nothing against gambling.
It just doesn't belong in the Public Eye.
It then gives Pool a Black Eye.
Keep it on the Down Low, Brother.

When machineturd responds to jizzBuckets, she is speaking to herself.

She has done this with her multiple accounts in the past and she seems to think she can sneak her stupidity in as fact, when 'somebody else'agrees with her.

And when did the conversation get pointed toward sanctioned 'official' gambling?

Red dick- if you have a point...gtfo!

mchnhed - You are a wealth of misinformation.
Many skins game players also made side bets.

The Skins Golf Game is a Money Game.
Not Gambling.
No one lost any money.
You earned money.
It wasn't taken from someone.

You all are getting gamble and compete mixed up.

And FINALLY you have come to your point. You think gambling gives pool a black eye. Great.

If you simply stated so in your initial post, I probably wouldn't be viewing your screen name as negatively as I do now. But I guess I would've eventually figured things out considering your forum reputation appears to be following you around from the posts in this thread.

Wire.
Weight.
Spot.
Race.
Straight Up.

I can't find references to these terms anywhere in any of the rule books from any of the associations.

Could someone help me understand what these terms have to do with playing competitive pocket billiards?
FYI, definitions of these and all other common gambling terms and phrases, along with every other billiards-related term or phrase I've ever seen or heard can be found in my online pool and billiards glossary. That's where I go anytime I want to look up something (or to add something new, when I see or hear something I never saw or heard before).

Enjoy,
Dave

Did see those Skins Game matches? Those guys did make bets.
The golfers won big money, but they also bet against each other.
Trevino had comments about them gambling at his home course.

I withdraw my question.
The Prosecution rests.

The question you withdrew wasn't a fair one...you had ulterior motives

But in case you think those things are kosher....maybe you can answer this one....
Do you walk to work, or take a lunch?

The question was fair.
Just misread by 99%.
What does gambling have to do with playing a real game of rules based pool?

Don't work.
Too poor to eat lunch.
You buying?

What does gambling have to do with playing a game of pool?

What does gambling have to do with... playing pool. Nothing
What does gambling have to do with... playing golf. Nothing
What does gambling have to do with... playing football. Nothing
What does gambling have to do with... horse racing. Nothing

We might as well take up checkers.... Oh wait a sec... Someone just made a bet on checkers.
Maybe I'll buy some lottery tickets.

Finally the correct answer.....Nothing.
Those terms are gambling terms used when betting on Pool,
but they are not terms used in playing a game of Pool.

And....... I'll bet a Dollar that someone will answer back instead of just letting this awful thread die from lack of,responses.
