World Cup of Pool 2018 Thread

Yeah, he got an income from the government when he medaled in European championships. So it was not a guarantee, though he managed to do this several years in a row in various disciplines. He is now working at the biggest casino in Amsterdam. I don't know if he will come back, but he seemed pretty decided that he'd had enough.

I believe Nicks medal streak at EC was something like 12 years. But in 2017 he finished "only" 5th which meant that he lost his Olympic A-Status (worth 25k in money+tournament expenses covered). He made the decision to retire from pro pool for the sake of his family. You can read about it here: https://www.parool.nl/amsterdam/van-de-pooltafel-naar-de-blackjacktafel~a4565009/?hash=c656894c766eeba480ca49e66fa7e1e87b3e826b

Poland vs Kuwait at the 22min mark...Kuwait have broken their what!?! Lol. I have no idea what he said but I know what it sounds like to me. :yikes:

I can’t, or don’t know how to, link the time in the vid from my phone, but it’s at the 22min mark.

Phil Yates says the Kuwaitis have broken their dick. Must be a British slang expression. Thanks Phil!

Broken their duck. Means they’ve scored to get off zero. Yep, BritIsh slang expression that originates from cricket where if a batsman is bowled out on zero he is “out for a duck”. Why a duck? No idea.

Duck egg is a zero?

Unbelievable! Both Spanish players took a good look at this rack so they knew what was going on. I guess they were hoping to make the nine on the break. How is it possible that no one else saw this glaring error? The whole arena must have been sleep walking into this first match of the day!

Pretty sure the Spanish team didn’t notice, Jay, or they would’ve broke from the other side.
....nerves, under the bright lights.

pt...racked the nine on the wing once.

I am watching it with a Roku. It is on fubo tv which offers a 30 day free trial period if anyone's interested.

I have seen it one time previously in a televised event where the nine was placed in the back. IIRC, it was noticed after the break but not before by anyone. No one who spoke up that is.

Amazing, it appears even the announcers didn't pick up on it. When the two Spaniards examine the rack, they didn't even appear to make any eye contact or whisper to each other to confirm that they even realized it. I'm curious if they are playing it a win or spot the 9 if you happen to make the 9 on the break?

Being a matchroom even, I'm pretty sure it's a win.

Love the event, but there's always a lot of "dead money" at the World Cup of Pool. There just aren't 32 countries that can put together a competitive team of two.

By the next round, the matches will be far more competitive.

I would say Greece's match. Some mistakes, yes, but then they clicked and produced the best performance of the tournament so far IMO.

Yeah I agree with this, plus the interview after the match was pretty good. One nervous player, one with confidence pus!

Just watched my saved match of Netherlands vs. Thailand. Late in the match Thailand plays a safety on the 4 ball and Beisterboch has to jump. I see the 8 ball move before he hits the 4. Ref apparently doesn't see it move, but I do. Basically costs them that game, although the Thai player has a shot he probably should have made. I was really impressed with their play against a tough team.

Looking forward to tomorrow's matches.

Charlie

I think Thailand got screwed. Both Thai players looked like they were waiting for Holland to call the foul but never did. The 8B definitely moved on that jump shot. I think they would have won the match if they had ball in hand in that situation. If the Dutch saw the foul but didn't call it, I hope they get drilled in their next match. Where was the ref? It was obvious!

Don't necessarily get your hopes up here. I put in my provider and zip code and it told me "we have you covered-channel 1159 in your area. I punch it in on the TV and i get ????-Then i look on the guide and there is no 1159 there either.

I did the same thing (Optimum customer by any chance?) & the channel 1159 does not exist. I looked it up & realized the parent company took the channel away last year when the network wanted to renegotiate the contract which is laughable considering how little it gets in ratings.

Why can't all the teams have as much fun as the Japanese guys?
Sweden looks like they are going through a tax audit when tied 3-3....while Naoyuki and Kuribayashi are laughing and telling jokes.

I understand composure and game face, but you gotta laugh and have fun.

Well, Sweden played pretty darn sporty....the tax audit game face worked, winning 7-5 with a clutch shot to free up that 8 ball in the end.

Their safety play was fantastic.
