Stolen league money

Sounds like somebody may like playing the ponies or betting other peoples money in poker home games.

We had a room owner steal $8,000 cash from our 10 ball break and run pot and blamed it on mysterious theives. We all called bullshit but what can you do? Soon after the guy skipped town.

There's many people in this game who are not worthy of respect and have no problem using their positions to steal.

An LO losing that much cash in his house from robbery is like a pro pool player losing a cue he was paid to use.
Kinda suspicious .

I'd wonder if there is an applicable insurance policy, held either by the operator, owner or sanctioning body.

Shit... I'd even want to know if it was reported to the police or the top sanctioning body. Those two actions would give credibility to the allegation a crime took place.

I would expect franchises of actual corporations (APA, probably TAP, etc.) to be required to maintain insurance policies as part of their franchise agreement.

If it's just a random local league, then you may be out of luck. I'm not even sure a homeowners policy that covers personal losses would cover a business loss.

Hope it works out ok!

Since it was so close to payout time, there is a good chance that the LO had withdrawn the money from the bank to issue payouts. I know that I have to give my bank at least a week's notice to withdraw a large chunk of money with a certain denomination breakdown. If this is not the case, and over the course of the season the LO held the money at his home instead of the bank, then that is a serious problem that must be addressed.

The bank would issue bank checks made out to the winners or use travellers checks to prevent the theft issue.

Just don't understand why so careless?

No scenario makes sense.

I think it’s BCAPL

So quick to judge, cmon people.....

In the league I played on, the league operator did put the funds in the bank each week. Even had how much was in the account on the league website, very transparent.
Like somebody already stated, you don't just walk up to the teller and say I want to take out 20K in $20 bills please. You have to give them a little notice, usually a week is sufficient.
There are multiple payouts in a league. You have the 1st place team, 2nd place and however far you want to pay. Usually there are payouts for top player or players. Maybe even a payout or two for best improved or something along those lines.
These payout come in odd amounts at times and put in separate envelopes, prepared ahead of time.
This is why the league operator would have the large amount in his/her house one day before payouts. He/she would need time to separate money into many envelopes.
So.....for those who think their league payouts just automatically jump from the bank and into the lil payout envelope you receive at the end of year......think again.
More to it than you would think.

Of course I'm assuming the LO is honest. It could very well be that the LO set it all up and took the money. Either way, in this case I'm not sure how the money would be "made right" if it was indeed stolen. Good luck........

I would call the local law enforcement myself to see if a report has been filed. If one hasn't been then you could file one then.

For that kind of money, many people would try to find a way to walk off with it, police report or not. If the money was not as least locked in a safe, preferably a hidden safe, the LO was negligent IMO. Whether it was stolen or not, he is 100% responsible and the league or the players should be filing civil suits against him to get their money.

According to him, he keeps the money in his large home safe during the season. Recently moved it to his small safe to start sorting the payouts. The small safe was stolen in the burglary.

We had kinda same thing happen years ago here come to find out operator came up on hard times and stole the money. We never did get our money and they never had another leauge. It sucks but a part of life. ( not saying that's what's going on here )

That would only be the case if the $19,000 were given to just a few people/teams. But most leagues pay out small amounts of money to many dozens of people. For example, my last seasonal payout total was for over $15,000, it went to well over 5 dozen people, and the individual payouts ranged from $10 to over $500. For safety sake I sometimes pay a portion of the larger payouts by check, but I am not going to write 50 checks whose amounts are under $50 each (and no bank is going to either...for free that is).

Cash payouts at a league banquet are standard operating procedure. Until we know more, this LO still deserves a substantial amount of reasonable doubt as to his guilt.

Having said that, I also want to say to all LOs that it doesn't take a genius to know where and when a large concentration of league cash will be, either on a weekly basis or a seasonal basis. Be safe, be secure, and try to always have trustworthy people help you when you are distributing large sums of money like this.

This is too simple!!!

American Express gift cards made out in $50 denominations is what they do at work for employee Christmas gifts...

No charge and simple for small amounts. My experience was vegas travel money totaling $800 is what I won several times and used for the trip to Vegas nationals and vacation...

The league gave traveler's checks or bank checks and never cash, that is why I am surprised that any league operator would encounter this situation...

You’re right. This league pays out every team a percentage. Top 3 shooters or so, top 3 runout leaders, and a couple of “most improved awards”.

Not smart to keep that kind of cash around. As for safes most are junk. And if they are not secure(bolted) forget about it. Anyway sorry to hear this happened.

One would think appropriate cash handling instructions are shared with collectors, along with the expectation of adherence and the consequences of any lack thereof...and that there would be some protections in place for the organization as a whole.

But perhaps the overall strategy from the top is hope I'd doesn't happen and pay up, if it does. That isn't a 'best practice', but many small businesses use it.

Sorry, but like all other gift cards, American Express gift cards ARE NOT FREE!!!
If you buy them online from American Express, the charge PER CARD is $3.95. Doesn't matter if the card is for $50 or $500. That charge goes up significantly if you buy them at a store. Doing some quick math, that would mean that almost 8% of our league's entire payout would go down the gift card toilet.

Here is another reason why I always hand out cash (vs checks) to everyone except those who won really big. Our end-of-season banquets are almost always held at local bars/restaurants/lodges, and when people have cash in hand that means more business for the bar/restaurant and more tips for the bartender. I even go so far as to give out a minimum number of small bills so that people have them to pay tabs and leave a tip. Nothing is more frustrating to a bartender that to have 50 people all show up at the same time with $100 bills wanting to buy a beer.

How convenient. The entire small safe was just walked off with. When I said safe, I meant a secure one, preferably one bolted into concrete, whether small or not. There are also ways to hide a safe where it would be VERY hard to find, and then if they do find it by chance, if it's bolted down, it becomes rather hard to run off with.

I'd definately be asking some questions. First, like has been mentioned, was a police report filed? Who else knew he kept the money at his home? What else if anything was taken?

The part where he said he moved the money from the large safe to the small safe doesn't make sense, seems to me it would be easier to separate the payout money in a larger safe.

Maybe I'm a bit cynical but it's been my experience that the first person you suspect is usually guilty.

I truley hope things work out, it's a messed up situation that could have been easily prevented.
