Albin was the best for Europe. Plain and simple. If you look at the losses Albin took, none of them were ugly, none of them were blow outs. Both were on the hill. Opponents had to play near-perfect to beat him whether singles or in doubles. I don't remember Albin ever looking like he was struggling, never looked weak, and I don't remember him really botching anything up badly. He made some errors, but they were reasonable and controlled. They weren't outlandish like the balls missed by Thorpe or Styer for example.[/QUOTE]
Grilled cheese,
You made a lot of substantive points in your longer post, of which the above is part.
I also agree that Albin surely seemed in command of the table at about every moment, and had no blowout in losses.
I would differ with your posts only in that he did have more than one flub-a-dub missed shot on a par with those of Thorpe (not quite as bad as Tyler). I was very, very pleased with the overall energy, commitment, focus and execution by both Tyler and Billy even with a miss or two (like Albin).
Not knocking Albin at all, he played magnificently. Just remembering.
Note: Albin's singles match against Skyler Woodward was magnificently played; his problem
was that Skyler's was even more so! Albin was the benchmark European player.
A great, great week by Team USA, one for which America can take justifiable pride. Well done!
Extremely well done, electrically charged, emotionally a piledriver!
