Derby City Straight Pool Challenge 2019

Frank was a very strong player at any game in his day. His best 2 games being 1-pocket and banks, although he played a mean game of 9-ball, as famously documented in Jay's first book. Now in his 70s, to say he could hang with those guys running 130's+ on a Diamond table, is simply not realistic, in my opinion. Even now, I'd still pick Cool Cat Ray to take down Frank in 14.1, and Ray is 10+ years older.

Thx, I needed that. If I remember correctly....I think he got in a bad car accident and quit playing in his young prime. He had a Balabuska and sold it to Steve Cook, I'm thinkin' late 60's or very early 70's. I saw the Cookie shoot quite a few times at Janscos and at Jr. Golfs room Tampa, 1968, and Congress.

Actually, it is $21,000 added this year because there is a special prize for breaking the record of an additional $1000. Melling is in line to collect it unless someone else has a very good Wednesday.

I don't have all the scores, but SVB and Filler had overlapping runs of 198, so their places in the finals are fairly secure.;)

I think it's going to take 165+ to qualify this year.

Niels Feijen made one of the hardest long runs I've ever seen, with shots like an 80 degree cut along the head rail to break the rack on a secondary break shot.

This is just magnificent and the way the players warm up to straight pool at this event is something to behold.

The qualifying rounds bring both competition and camaraderie among the players, and they often sweat each others runs in both a friendly and supportive manner.

The atmosphere in the straight pool challenge is priceless.

Pocket Size

What size pockets are on the two Straight Pool Challenge tables. Thanks.

Edit: just read the entire thread. RKC says 4.5”.

Agree with this 100%. It's also the most intimate environment for watching any of the events at the DCC. You are practically sitting right on top of them as they make the runs. Sometimes it's a bit too close to be honest, but the insights you get to glean from watching how they address and cue the ball and the fact that some players do a version of their own commentary is fascinating.

Speaking of the camaraderie you're talking about I was watching Niels make a long run yesterday and after the run he called John Schmidt over who was also watching the run and they discussed at length how to shoot different break shots and under what conditions one can avoid the scratch. It was fascinating.

No. That was the intention but Chad from Diamond was hearing complaints about table 1 and came up and looked under the head of the table and said "oops". Somehow a 4 1/8 table got put there. I said before how they seemed smaller than before. They are.

Any current list of the top 8 runs?

Here you go!

Leevan on a 180+

(Edit: photo won’t upload)

Dennis - 260
Melling - 244
Schmidt - 216
Mika - 201
SVB - 198
Filler - 198
Leevan - 183
Feijen - 179

Are the pockets 4.5"?

One commentator on the stream during Neil's run said 4", but I think he's mistaken.

Is today the last day for qualifiers?

Maybe 14.1 will make a comeback for Action matches!!!

Frankly, from what I heard at the event this year from well placed sources, there is reason to wonder whether the 14.1 Challenge will return in future years.

Interesting. So if I'm hearing you right, one of the tables used in the SPC accidentally had 4 1/8" pockets and the other(s) had the regular pro-cut at 4.5". Since you're a science guy, and if you have all the data (which runs were on the "tighter" vs looser table), could you crunch the numbers in terms of 4.125" vs 4.5".........avg run, high run, a players avg run on the tighter vs looser, etc? Thanks.

This seems quite odd considering it's generating more interest from players and fans this year than any year prior, and the standard of play is the highest it has ever been.

that would be a shame

That would be a shame, especially if they can keep finding extra cash. I would have thought any run over two hundred was pretty safe on those tables. With proper incentive two hundred seems reachable by a handful or more of shooters.

Seems like we just got some unwanted controversy with a tight table accidentally getting in the mix though.
