Why Is it Named Mosconi Cup?

Willie hated 9 Ball and hammered the game most days of his life.
He didn't like how they took the discipline, grace and art of the sport and turned it into a quickie-masturbation session for hacks.

That's nothing to do with me. I love 9 Ball so rename it The Browning Cup!
For what its worth, I would like to see a Cup with Europe, USA, Taiwan, and Phillipines(4 teams). It just wouldn't be a Mosconi Cup. Round robin, longer races and make a week out of it.

I'd also like to see past players on both teams playing as a warm-up. Think - Earl, Archer, Morris, Hatch, Keith vs Ralph, Darren, Hohman, and 2 other past euro players. Maybe they play the first 3 days, then the main event. Extend this thing out to a week.

You could have a womens version.

You could call it The Mrs Mosconi Cup
Well, the first few years were mixed. But I think the women's version should be the McGinnis Cup. It sort of has a built-in sponsor.

It's called the Mosconi Cup as a tribute to the player who was widely considered the best ever when the event was conceived in 1994, just about a year after Willie's death. It was done with the blessing of Willie's widow. Yes, Mosconi didn't care much for nine ball, but bringing attention to his legacy once a year at the Mosconi, in my opinion, honors the man and I'm all for it.

Matchroom, once again, showed that they care about the game's heritage and history when they took over the US Open 9-ball, naming the winning trophy the Barry Behrman trophy and Emily Frazer made sure that Brady and Shannon Behrman were treated like royalty as attendees.

Personally, I think we should be grateful that Matchroom shows so much respect for pool's past and those that helped bring the game to where it is today.

Very well said! You've always got the good stuff 👍

Minnesota Fats is the only universal name associated with pool.
The "Fast Eddie Cup" seems to have a nice ring to it... Does the name "Fast Eddie" register anywhere on the universal recognizability chart? Just curious.

And while the speech was, perhaps, inspirational to some, I think he called Flora by another name, though I could be mistaken -- I just recall, at the moment, being surprised and thinking it was incorrect. Not that I know anything about Mosconi so I could be wrong. oh, and BTW, if I recall correctly you were the one who took the picture of I and Michaela.

In any case, don't try so hard that it's so evident you want back into the MC commentating booth, Jay.

I spelled Michaela wrong too. Shame on me. And you couldn't carry BH, aka Barry Hearn's brief case. Shame on you.

I like the expansion idea but to me it seams like Europe doesn't play by the rules. Maybe I'm missing something but Fedor Gorst is Russian if I'm not mistaken. How is he allowed to play on team Europe? And Kaci for example isn't European plus over the years their have been guys from India on team Europe. If Europe is going to reach out that far then we should be able to reach into all of North America / Canada or even the entire Americas.

Right and Jayson has been an American citizen longer than Honey Boo Boo.

Since when have the British played by anyone's rules but their own?

I am not in-charge of your opinions and, to me... you're just another internet cocoroach.
Naw, WW is a good dude and you are probably too. I like passion about the game and your thoughts on it too, and the more passionate you are the more you will fit into this little AZ club(imho) sometimes we disagree, but we all love the game(hell, I even disagree with stu(sjm) sometimes 🤣)

Honestly, thanks for posting

I was born in France and have no idea who I would play for.

What the pool world needs now is love sweet love.

I mean - other than money, purpose, structure, direction, respect, organization, leadership, guts, support and a much better media..... but don't worry... someone will fix it.... said the players of 1928.

I've been wanting to drive up to his poolroom for a few months now, when he gets back I probably will.

Too bad our dictator in NY has all the rooms locked down.

I dont blame him one bit for playing for Europe, especially with the Shane rivalry(which is good for the game)

And yes, I get it, he lives here and America is giving him that opportunity. I see it both ways

Another thing about the Euro guys, I play poker with 2 of them and I've never had an issue with sending and receiving $, that goes a long way in the pool world.

Not saying the US guys wouldn't be as honest, but i do have a track record with the other guys and that goes a long way with me, as it does with anybody dealing in larger amounts of $

Imagine Willie Mosconi falling in love with the 30 second clock, a loud alarm when time is almost up, sharking by those in attendance {this year was quiet), special rules for the break, no warm up on the playing table, changing object ball colors/scheme, and races to 5 to pocket 9 balls. I am not up on all the adjustments made, but they weren't to create an advantage for America. They were for hype.

The UK may have put together a superior team, but all the fine adjustments is enough for me to put off watching it and then watch it once at most. I watch such matches on mute. I read elsewhere about the knowledgeable commentators, but I am not impressed historically. Now someone like the departed Grady Mathews would be outstanding. Surely there are people with his talent and observational skills. I have yet to watch the 2018 or 2019 matches.

It would seem that straight pool would better represent the name Mosconi, than a short race of 9 balls. I like straight pool, and one pocket. Their outcomes favor the more skillful cueist.
I respect your opinion about the skill sets needed for 1 pocket and 14.1, but let’s not degrade the skills of great 9 and 10 ball players- being elite in those games takes top notch ability too.
1 pocket and straight pool are too slow to market on TV. 9 ball is a good game for TV, but they made a mistake in changing some of the ball colors.

let’s give match room some deserved credit. They are doing their best to market the sport when few others are doing so

I wouldn't worry about any of it. 1/2 the money you paid for that crappy live stream has gone to the queen and the pope gets his 10%.

Otherwise - they have no clue on when and how they can wipe their own asses.

Americans don't have this luxury. We've always been on our own.
