Fixing the game of 9 ball.

Its a modified rule change to the 2 shot foul push out.

A player can push ot at any time after the break if they're stuck, BUT if the incoming player declines to take the shot, and passes it back to the player that pushed out, THAT player then MUST pocket a ball on the next shot! If the player fails to pocket a ball, the incoming player gets ball in hand to start with.

If the player accepts the layout of the table AFTER the opponent has pushed out, then THAT player must MAKE a ball, failure to do so will result in ball in hand to start with to the player that pushed out!!!
This rule change also eliminates the 3 foul loss of game rule.

I've always wanted to try ball in hand after any miss.

I wonder how that would work for me as a handicap against an 800+ Fargo.

About 5 or 6 years ago, at the suggestion of a well known promoter, I played for a number of hours with these rules. It was miserable. I tried my best to acclimate. There is the intangible and inexplicable. People like what they like and don't like what they don't like. Many, many hours with multiple players are needed to get a good assessment.

Agreed, but if those are sponsored event rules, that changes everything!

There are similarities with your rules and Grady’s rules. As much as they make sense, Grady’s rules were just no fun and were never embraced by the pool community at any level.

Wouldn't this eliminate the most famous shot in pool, Efren's Z shot? And, also, how he single handedly changed the game of 9 ball, with the kick-safe?

Why would it change the kicking game? Player can shoot to make a legal shot anytime, don't have to push out!

Because Efren would have pushed out instead of shooting a very low percentage shot
Ok then, what would Efren have done after he pushed out, and his opponent told him, go ahead, shoot. Now, he has to MAKE a ball, because playing safe won't change the fact that its ball in hand to the incoming player because he DIDN'T pocket a ball! Then what???

Moot point . The point was with the push-out you lost the pleasure of seeing Efren make that z-shot .
Efren would have pushed to a higher percentage shot .

You guys are so negative to change, you're blind to the reasons why change needs to be made! When you use the pushout rule, SOMEONE is going to have to MAKE a ball on the NEXT shot, Hail Mary shot or NOT, but when you use the push out rule, it's NOT to play a safe on your next shot, its to put the CUE ball in a position so you can HAVE a chance to get out of a bad position, instead of selling out to your opponent by attempt to make a legal shot, missing, and your opponent gets ball in hand anyway.

At least with this option, after pushing out, you can challenge your opponent into making a serious decision.....do they take the shot, or pass it back! What's the odds on pocketing a ball, vs missing the shot!!! Does the opponent want to risk it, or DARE the opponent to make a ball, and pass it back to the opponent....and wait and see what happens!!!

And what if Efren's opponent took the shot, instead of passing it back to Efren??? Do you really think Efren would have done that???

Personally, I think Efren would have taken the Z shot anyway, rather than take the chance on not getting the shot back after pushing out!!!

What do you think pushing out to a higher percentage shot does to getting your opponent to tell you, yeah, sure, go ahead and shoot again!! Or, oh hell no, I'll take that shot from here, THANK YOU Efren!!!

You don't get it, do you! After a push out, its do or die to who ever shoots next!!! It don't matter who shoots, if a ball ISN'T POCKETED, its a foul!!! Incoming player starts with ball in hand, and more than likely wins the game! Thats a hell of a risk, so do you really WANT TO PUSH OUT???

Here's what I don't like about sticking your opponent so bad in a safe that there's no way out. Player shoots, makes the best attempt to make a legal shot, but fouls anyway, incoming player gets ball in hand, runs out!! What this rule change does, is give that SAME player a fighting chance to get OUT of that safety play by pushing out to a position in which they have at least a shot to make a ball, instead of just selling out.

This creates drama now in the game because the opponent is now faced with the decision of do I TAKE the shot, or do I take the RISK of giving the shot back to my opponent and HOPE he DON'T make a ball, because if he does, it might cost me the game!! But if I TAKE the shot and miss, THAT might cost me the game too! OH BOY, what do I do now???? Better hurry up and decide though, shot clock is counting down!!!
