The Reyes Cup

Emily and Matchroom are like the United States during World War 2.

Her campaign just up and moves out and conquers and moves on. Its a straight up kill path.

What is Emily's background?

In addition to a Reyes Cup there should also be the Reyes Lifetime Award. The entire billiard team basically Reyes put PI on the map in a positive sports way. The Cesar Morales story might not sit well with immigration or tax people.

It just makes business sense that a Vietnamese player (Duong?) should be one of the wild cards. I had no idea until the past year how HUGE pool is in Vietnam. The ratings will double if there is Vietnamese representation.
check out videos of the Ho chi Minh 3 cushion world cup. Crowd was into it!

Cuesports are definitely big there.

I'm thinking the Mosconi Cup may be in trouble. With the popularity of the Asian pool scene and the raw competitive play we will see in this Reyes Cup tournament may someday render the need to have America involved in this type of format again.

We've been getting our butts kicked for what feels like the last 20 years and it keeps selling out. The MC isn't going anywhere.

Emily's exact words were "This year it is going to be Team Asia vs Team Europe, but it's not going to be that way every year, let's keep Team USA into the mix".

Where did you hear her state that it was winner of MC vs Asia?
Is there an interview link I can watch? I've been looking and haven't found one. Thanks.

Do we think this will have same atmosphere as the MC? I could see the Filipino players managing it well based on what they put up with in their money matches.

What about players from other Asian countries?

If Mosconi was made popular to most Americans and Europeans,

Then what are the theoretical estimations for the popularity of Efren Reyes in Asia and Asian Cultures located in Russian controlled government regions.

The Reyes cup could do for Asia what Billiards did for the European youth sports market. That is create a way for country bound youth to see the world. The world would never know Mosconi if the billiard industry didn't back it.

Today the world knows so much because we were brought together for Mosconi. I still want to go live one day and the Florida one sounds good.

Imagine what the Reyes Cup can do when we think and integrate the best lessons across all countries and disciplines to set up billiards for success. In Asia you can find a pool room easily, that makes these youth a threat. You don't have to be tall or fast or a certain size, in pool you need to know how to set the shot and how to make the shot.

Its an American past time that should be funded by weapons manufacturers. Today they are called Matchroom players, and they tour the world.

When MacArthur was in the Philippines rumor has it he trained rebels and he trained opposition. Today PI is being steered by China, but with Matchroom cutting into the scene, its a new game.

Is Efren the poor former who rose to success internationally or was he denied the opportunity by his government to show the world how talented he was because lack of youth sports investment. Then Puyat Sports open their doors to him. Efren had a career and a future.

The failure of parenting and education in PI is a taboo and shameful. However it is commonly overlooked.

Matchroom is driving the ship and I hope it gives Asians a chance for visibility in their heritage lands. Like many American athletes chasing the olympics, chasing pro sports in Asia has a high upfront cost.

I think thats just the logical assumption isn't it (i.e. the winner of the Mosconi Cup, rather than always Europe)?

That said, I would have preferred The Philippines vs Asia as the Reyes Cup.

They could always have the winner of the two then meet!

I think we're already there. The US doesn't stand a chance. I realize we are big geographically but when you have a whole continent that is densely packed and actually has training facilities and the type of clubs/halls to produce good players we stand no chance. US pool is so disjointed that it's not even funny. We might have a chance if it was North America vs. Europe but as it stands I don't see us winning a MC in the next decade at least.

That means winner of MC usually Europe will play twice while USA and Asia play once. If it is same guaranteed MC payout $40K each for winner and $20K each for runner up, then Europe will be guaranteed at least $60K to $80K each while Asia will be guaranteed at least $20K to $40K each.

So to make it more equitable and fairer for all 3 teams, do another cup between USA and Asia. Call that Reyes Cup. The one between Europe and Asia, call it Steve Davis Cup (since Steve Davis was also pool player ) or Ralf Cup.
That way all 3 teams get to play twice each and each player guaranteed $40K and can win up to $80K.
They can easily find sponsors/partners to help fund for the Ralf Cup which I am sure easily find from their regular partners for their many European events

Look at the American kids’ attitude. We will never succeed in pool. It’s not like Asian kids are hanging out at pool rooms. They are actually late bloomers. We have to have a few prodigies to compete and these are kids of parents who play.

The game just comes a lot easier to them because of mentality. At the pro level you want to minimize mistakes and the Asians seem to make very few and the Europeans as well.

Too many cups will dilute it. The prestige will be gone and it becomes another league.

Perhaps it’s due to Americans predilection for wanting to bang on bar boxes instead of playing pool on pool tables.

We invented both pool and it’s current game of choice 9 ball yet for the last couple decades it is Europeans & Filipinos/Asians dominating the sport. You know what you rarely see in Europe, the Philippines and the rest of Asia, bar boxes. In the area I’m currently in a guy I know opened a room with all new Diamond 9’s & 7’s, an equal amount of each. Within a year he had pulled out all but Two of 9’ tables and made a giant area for Corn Hole FFS. He said he only had a couple customers that utilized the 9’ tables, everyone wanted to play on bar boxes so he kept a couple, pulled the rest out and installed Corn Hole to survive. The problem is Americans “wanting to go to Vegas in APA” instead of being actual pool players that play on a real table and play all disciplines. It’s a damn shame.

It's pathetic. In the Metro DC area it's gone from over 50 pool rooms in the late 60's to maybe 4 or 5 today that have anything but those 7' toy tables. And we wonder why Europe and Asia leave us in the dust when it comes to pool.

Americans are in it for the short term success. They compete for a trip to Vegas every year. They don’t see the long game of getting better. These are adults we’re talking about so there is no aspiration to become pro. They get better on their respective 7 footers and neglect the 9 foot because there is no prestige like going to Vegas on a 9 footer. Yes it is sad and why there will be an extinction of 9 foot tables.

We need more 9 foot tournaments from room owners to get others involved. APA players don’t even play in our tournaments. It’s like another league to them. No interest to even see how they fair against the other half of the room.

I would love to play in a 7 foot tournament but again it’s only allowed for their players.

You’re right, it is pathetic. Every year the US gets their ass handed to them at the Mosconi Cup and the majority of those on this site mourn the loss, and those that mourn are the same people playing on Boxes participating in the “How y’all doing in league” thread and “trying to go to Vegas” in APA. Ping pong players don’t go to Wimbledon and win because Ping Pong isn’t tennis. Putt Putt players don’t go and win the Masters Golf Championship because Putt Putt isn’t golf. The USA doesn’t win at or dominate pool because Bar Box banging isn’t Pool.
