Both the white and yellow balls are/can be the CB.

But can both players use either the white or yellow as the CB?

I thought I read something where it said each player has their own CB and can only use that specific one.

The white CB is assigned to the lag winner, and remains so for the match duration.

Welker Cochran did indeed win a World Three-Cushion (3-C) Championship that was played under the unique "optional cue ball" rule. [1, 2]
Cochran captured the World Three-Cushion Championship title in 1944 by reclaiming it from his longtime rival, Willie Hoppe. The 1944 tournament (alongside the 1928, 1942, and a few other iterations) implemented an experimental rule modification where players could select an "optional ball" as their cue ball to help increase scoring and make the game more dynamic for spectators. As a master of both balkline and three-cushion billiards, Cochran excelled under this format, which historically inflated grand averages for the tournament's competitors

The incoming player had their choice of what CB to start an inning, if that player scored a point they had to proceed to shoot with that 'Same' CB throughout that inning!

Even with equal innings, I can't think of a reason to give up the hanger first point with position.

The 'Break' in 3C for the Top players now days is worth on the average, 5-7 points!

If 'On Paper' Player 'A' is a Big Fav over Player 'B' in a match that has 'Equal Innings' they may elect to have the 'Last Word' in the match!

Since you excelled at “playing safe” also, how would it be if you could play either cue ball for ‘every shot’?

I imagine the offense would be off the charts.
 
that's one of the spots i would get from players. i can use both cue balls.

and gambling we always played who breaks chooses which ball he has. no one was a tournament player, never met one until robin and gold in vegas.

Steve, Only the 1st shot of every inning!

All remaining points scored in that inning must be with the Same CB!

I know.

I was asking how it would be IF you could pick either cue ball for every shot.

I could see that being one of the types of spots you might have given up in your day.

There was a 'Gypsy' Mike that came to Chicago every Summer to go to Cub games, sit in the bleachers and Bet on every pitch/inning!

He hung out at Bensingers before and after the games!

For 3 years, no matter what game I gave him in 3C, he couldn't win, including shoot with any CB on every shot!

Mike would only play 10 points or less!

We used to play on table #7, in front of the Bar, he liked all the sweaters pulling for him to finally win!

After a day of beatings, he finally said, "I'm not playing you again no matter what the game is"!

I told him, "When you come back tomorrow I'll have a game for you you can't refuse"!

That night after the pool room closed, I practiced playing the Break '5' cushions, and many different positions 5 rails or more for 4 hrs!

When Mike came and heard the game I had for him, he couldn't wait to get to his Fav table!

I had to make All my shots '5 rails or more' to his 3,4 5 or more rail shots!

We played 3 point games, $200 a pop!

We always played 'Winner Breaks', I'd let him win a game here & there, but eventually the usual result!

So back to my question about using either cue ball for every shot.

Would a tournament be exciting if they did something like that?

The Best players in the world would reguarly avg. over 3.00+ in many games!

BTW, Cochran's average for that 1944 World Championship 'Optional Ball' was, 1.35!

The Lower tier B+-A- players in the world today average that in 'Normal' play!
