1 Pocket World Championships!!!!!

World events

I have not had the time to read all of the previous posts that have recently appeared - and which have now prompted Grady to say he is going to have a lot of events. And now Randy is going to start more "World" events in the same disciplines (One Pocket, Banks etc.) All of these seem to be instigated by personal feelings - although I obviously recognize their right to do so.

I just do not follow this type of thinking. All of these different and conflicting events are NOT GOOD for pool. Too many events just doom most to fail. It is just like having too many restaurants or gas stations. They all take a little piece of the pie - and they all have an increased probability of filure.

First of all I totally agree that an OPEN event is and OPEN event. And all seem to forget that there are 4 upcoming US Open Championships already scheduled for November (Qlympics).

Obviously I want them to be at least mildly successful. I don't have an outside sponsor - or an angel. All I have is my love of the game. I don't want my event (or others for that matter) to be caught blindsided by all the rhetoric. So-all I can say is to please try to support the events that are already scheduled - rather than go out and start a whole bunch more.

Do pool events for the right reason. If you need more info, please go to our website. More info will be posted nextr week as to the added money and other info. There should be between $30,000 and $60,000 added (depending upon number of entries).

Randy....will you influence DP and invite Grady?

Grady, if invited, will you play?

repair the riff for the good of the game...

Whoa!!!! Hold on there, big fella. Although I am certain, (as i hold the contents of your posts, historically speaking, in very high regard), that this post was born with good intentions, it is way too premature. As my original post said, I will begin, immediately, to investigate whether or not my idea is at all viable, in relation to the WPA.

I will keep all intersted parties informed of any advancements, but please don't ask me about invitations, etc.

I posted this in Grady's thread as well but it is applicable here as well.

Mark you bring up a good point. It sounds like this tournament you are organizing has a solid foundation and more people should be lending a hand instead of creating a new event to stroke their own ego.

Colin Powell had a good quote that stated, "Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it".

I think this motto is applicable here. There is a right and wrong way to go about bettering the current state of pool. Recently I've seen two instances of what I believe is the wrong way.

Wait Mark I love your events. I told you so in Vegas. But if you are going to support anything that Grady does ( re: your post to Grady on another thread) and dont support other promoters that sounds like not wanting competition. Which is what others are accusing Charlie Williams or the UPA of.
I hope to be at the Qlympics even though I live out west. I hope for all 2 weeks. Not to play but to railbird and lay down some bets. So this is all out of my own pocket. I hope its as succesfull as the one in Vegas.

I for one don't subscribe to the idea that too many tournaments is not good for pool. Please, someone tell me the next time you discover too events scheduled. LOL.

I have no desire to to schedule this event, or any other event, at the same time as any other major. For me, it would only mean less player participation. Afterall, my main objective is for the players to have an opportunity to earn more.

From a business perspective, I sympathize with mark, obviously he is putting this on to turn a profit. Sure there are other reasons, but I'm sure he's not looking to take a bath. Me on the other hand, won't make a profit, and that is my objective from the start. In fact, my events could take place in a vacuum, as long as the players get to compete.

I wish Mark all the success he can handle with his new event. When tony robles, along with Charlie and john schmidt inspired me to create the straight pool world championships, the idea was to reenergize that particular games popularity. By all accounts, that is happening all over the US, as well as internationally. I believe that mark's project is a fine example of that.

Hopefully, if I can stage this new 1 pocket event, a new, younger generation might find this game appealling as well, after seeing todays "stars" of mens pro pool battle it out.

Since I am posting - I want to add that Grady is probably recognized as the premier promoter of one-pocket and bank type of events. Although a "little abrasive" at times, I think he has probably earned the right more than most.

I will support any event that Grady does - although as I said in another post, too many events just help make them all fail. Do events for the right reasons.

I, too, agree that TOO MANY events is not a good thing. A good example is what happened when Hilton Hotels tried to start a pool tour, several years ago.

Hilton Hotels came up with a tour plan, and there were big added monies, with tournaments scheduled all over the United States. As it turned out, only two Hilton Tour tournaments got off the ground, and the tour ended abruptly in Pittsburgh, with Hilton Hotels pulling out of the tour altogether. It ended almost as quickly as it had begun.

The second and last tournament of the Hilton Hotels in Pittsburgh was scheduled at the same time as many other pool tournaments. During this same weekend, at least on the East Coast, there was a Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour event at Turning Stone Casino, a New York State regional tournament in NYC (can't remember its name), and a Florida Pro tournament happening in Florida. With four pool tourneys happening at the same time, it split the players up, which resulted in each event not getting as big a turnout as they had hoped.

I was elated when this tour started. The promoter's vision of this Hilton Tour was big. He came to the U.S. Open one year, announcing this Hilton tour, and he was steered to the UPA to help him. The UPA, experiencing problems of their own, didn't deliver the players that the Hilton Tour had hoped for in Florida and in Pennsylvania. The lack of player participation, which consisted of a couple dozen UPA touring pros, was deemed as very poor. Hilton recognized after only two tournaments that pool was not a money-maker, and they wanted no part of it anymore. What an opportunity this could have and should have been for pool.

I also have to mention that the BCAPL is holding the Qlympics event in Louisville in November, and it includes 4 events that are US OPEN Championships. They are 14.1 (150/200 points), One Pocket, Full rack Banks, and 10 ball.

Added money should be around $30,000+. Which by the way is coming out of my pocket - unfortunately no sponsors and no angels.

But as I said before, I will still support any event the Grady does. And I wish his room the very best!!

Mark Griffin

I have a feeling the Qlympics in Louisville will be a huge success, Mr. Griffin.

As will Grady's tournament at Grady's pool room.

Because of the lack of a legitimate sanctioning body in the U.S., it is difficult to schedule dates for pool tournaments. It is sad when somebody posts up a schedule for a tour or an event well ahead of time, only to have some entity schedule theirs at the exact same time.

With the absence of the BCA's involvement in the American professional pool scene, I'm not sure what the answer is for pro players in the United States, which is my interest. I have been called a racist, a bigot, a member of the KKK, and other niceties because of my desire to see American professional pool elevate. I will continue to stand by my feelings and take the beating on this forum by non-American posters as well as the pool organization groupies who remind me of ambulance chasers.

I would like to see an American nationality-restricted tournament, such as a United States championship. They do it in other countries, but NEVER here in the States. We welcome players from around the world to compete in American events. I also would like to see a men's governing body of professional pool effect a change for the better. The current state of affairs seems very uncertain.

I lost my enthusiasm to follow the American tournament trail as far as professional pool goes. I enjoy going to great tournaments like DCC, U.S. Open, all Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour events, and look forward to Qlympics and Grady's upcoming tournaments. They're fun. I like seeing my friends, hanging out with Diana Hoppe on the offs, looking at her cool pictures and laughing. I enjoy meeting the legendary great players and chatting, like I did with Weenie Beenie at the U.S. Open, Buddy Hall at the Carolinas Open, and Billy Burge at the DCC. I really enjoy running into AzBilliards alumni, putting a face to the name.

Today, when I go to a pool tournament, I go to have a good time, whether my horse wins or loses. Winning is great, of course, but I liken tournaments today as a pool vacation. I also have health problems today, that I didn't have when I was younger, and whatever life I have left on this earth, I am going to live it to the fullest. I have not been to a pool tournament since July of 2006, and for good reason.

I wish you nothing but success, Mark. Keep on making things happen, for the betterment of pool. Your efforts are appreciated, as you are truly one of the good guys!

Second verse, same as the first!

I don't for a moment take this thread for anything other than a attempt to throw more garbage in our faces. It's geared towards keeping the war going and is nothing more than another attack. We've had enough attacks generated by hurt feelings. Another attack we do not need and I see this thread as being nothing but childish crap. Shame on us.

Is anybody having trouble with the forum borders and windows? I am seeing white boxes with red X's in them for some smiley faces, but not all.

Some posters' information boxes on the left is wider than other posters' boxes.

I am wondering if it is my browser, which is IE.

You, too? Well, then I won't feel like the lonesome! :p

I don't see this happening on other webpages. I did delete all my cookies and temporary files, as well as booting on and off, and then I even ran my virus protection a few times.

Well, maybe this too shall pass! :)

Just a tip..
Call me crazy... but I think that was directed towards you... and definitely me as well. I was able to figure it out on my own.

Hasn't there been enough arguing, or are you planning on continuing this aggressive and hostile nonsense from here on out? If so, let us know so that the rest of us can file it where it belongs without having to read it first. It is possible to express your beliefs without taking a flame thrower and torching everybody that diagrees with you. Example - SJM. You offer a lot to this forum and bring a lot to this forum, but you are coming across as vicious and unrelenting in your responses. I'm not even sure that you realize that you are coming across that way, but you are. As I write this, I feel that your response to me will perhaps be the same as they always are - aggressive, nasty, and bitter. It's sad because you and I have spoken with each other before and I know for a fact that those traits are far, far, far away from your true character. I only wish that the others you have had problems with on this forum are blessed with learning that about you as well.

Thanks Jim. Your comments are duly noted and with that I will end my side of this petty nonsensical BS that does nothing but waste everybody's time.

I'm talking took up the whole screen huge. No idea how that happened but I am wondering if that could have contributed to your problem.

FWIW, you're a tail-gater to me in recent times, responding to my opinions that you disagree with. I have tried to ignore you several times, but you keep coming back, stating that I am "vicious," suggesting I be banned from this forum, that I am not Keith and have no right to "throw my weight around" because I am not a pool player, et cetera, et cetera. I mean, if that is not antagonistic and vicious, I don't know what is. You've targeted me at least five-plus times in the last 24-hour period, to which I have ignored you.

What is sad to me is the PMs, phone calls, and e-mails that I get from others -- not just one or two, but MANY -- letting me know that you are bad-mouthing me behind the scenes.

What's with you, anyway? Stand up like a man and speak to my face, instead of whispering behind closed doors like a gossipy blabbermouth. If you want to initiate a JAM Haters Fan Club, then so be it. I don't give a damn what you think about me. The tag-team crap is stupid. I've been posting on forums long enough now, David, that I can see through the facade, and I try to handle myself on this forum and abide by the rules. If you want me banned, if you think I'm vicious, if you think I have no right to post here because I don't play pool anymore, then contact the moderator and let your voice be heard.

I have just as much right to post on this forum as you do. At least if I have something to say, I say it right to your face in public. You may not agree with my opinions, and that's okay. Once I'm done with you, I'm done. That's the way I do it. It's time for you to focus on your next ambition in life on this forum and leave me alone.

It happened to me a few days ago, and then the forum went down one evening. When it came back up, everything looked just fine and was back to normal.

Yesterday and today, though, it's happening again, white boxes with red X's. And now, the new thing, is the personal information sections to the left of the message windows with some posters are larger than others. They used to be all the same size.

I'm glad to know that it is just not my computer and that it may be an IE browser issue, however. I can still read the black-and-white print just fine. :D

Thank you Dave. I respect your position stated above and sincerely hope that you can follow through regardless of any "bait" thrown out.

It's truly painful to see people I respect... i.e. you, JAM, and Grady, come to mind, continually throwing hateballs at each other or somebody else. It really is painful to watch and I hope it stops. It's extremly counterproductive to this forum and pool in general.
