John,

Garage conversions are real popular here in Florida where I live. Since I need to use my garage for my motorcycle and shop, I added a 15 x 33 foot sunroom to the back of my house. If an addition to your house is feasible for you, you may want to consider that route and still be able to keep the garage for storage or shop etc.

Good luck!

I have my table in my garage. I put a wall up to divide my small work and lawn equipment area and the the remainder is the pool room.I have heating and a/c in that portion of the garage with table. I have to go outside to get to the table but that's better then no table at all. When my friends come over to play we don't have to worry about noise or the music playing,so it works out pretty good for me. Dennis

I have a similar problem and have thought of converting the garage. I have an 8 ft. table in the basement. I would like to build a new house but my wife has fits every time I mention it. I would really like to have a 9 ft. table. My son says that I could reinforce the beam, remove a post, move the furnace and water heater and have room in the basement. But then there is the chimney. That would be tough to move. New house, that's the answer. Or maybe new wife but after 60 years that's kind of tough too.

Sounds great.

You'll want about 15x20 for a 9-foot table, which you should have. That leaves room on one wall for spectator chairs and a high table. There is still room for darts, a sound system and a flat screen TV. There's even more room if it is a 2-1/2 car garage.

Consider A/C and insulation to control humidity and improve comfort. Depending on how far you want to go with this, you could wall-in the garage door, or at least replace it with an insulated door.

Consider the floor. A "ring" of carpet around the table absorbs sound and cushions balls that occasionally jump the table.

Also, don't forget the lighting. Many people are fans of the traditional hanging pool table light. (I personally prefer lots and lots of recessed lights all over the ceiling, but maybe I am wierd that way.)

Good luck! Post pictures when you are done.

Garage

I'm in the process of closing mine in.

I've already leveled up the concrete in the opening, built the wall in the opening. The wall includes 3 windows and a french door.

We re-did all the texture. installed a pull down stairway. The priming began when we realized something was wrong with the texture. It would fall off when the primer went on, in one area only (thank god).

This is the point when the contractors vanished!! LOL. I've done a little myself and my son has done a little too. I hate it, but I think it's time to hire some different contractors.:(.

Check out this Home Improvement Forum: It's as big as AZ!!! LOL!

Things to consider.

You will need to see if your air conditioning system can cary the added space. If not you will have to add a window unit. Also if your hot water heater is in the garage you might consider insulating it so it doesn't heat up you room.

When I inclosed my garage I did a drop down sealing so I could keep my garage door and have storage space. If you opt for this you don't have to worry about bricking the outside or doing siding. If you ever sale the house and interior wall is easier to tear out than brick.

My brother framed in a full length wall leaving 4' of space between the wall and the garage door.
Easily removed if necessary if and when they sell the house.

i did a garage conversion once, I framed a wall infront of the door on the inside, we fastened the door shut, I insulated iit with R-30 insulation and used 5/8" sheet rock, taped and mudded it, sanded it down,a littl texture and paint and it was just fine. Never had the heat come in and it faced the sun, the cold wansnt a issue either. It was a functional second room because the other walls were insulated(make sure they all are), I put down a carpet and a Gold Crown 3, I had that room for about 3 years, when I moved I just took out the carpet and wall and it was a normal garage again, its not a big job at all.

if

If you have a wife the part about it being a extra room and adding
value to the house is a good selling point .Of course she will know
its a pool room .:D I have seen alot of em that worked out good
I run a tv and video service center in Atlanta and people here do it
all the time for bigger tv's .

I put HVAC in the garage about 9 years ago and a 5 ton unit, which is plenty for the house and garage. I then built a custom storage shed on the back of the garage. I gave away and threw out tons of crap to clear out the garage. Sold my Corvette and quads and voila, space for a restored GCI. I have insulated all the walls, replaced two small tiny windows with a large one, roughed in for a TV and some fans, put down carpet and thin pad. The best thing about having the table in the converted garage is that I can play all hours of the night and my family can't hear it. Another plus is that the table doesn't get covered in crap like it did when I had one in the house. Post up picks!!!!

i'm in the process of converting my 2-car garage into a pool room also. for ac, i'm cutting a hole in an exterior door in the garage that wont be used anymore and fitting in a window rattler. the walls are painted, and the cieling is decent. all i need to get is some cheap and thin carpet to lay down, and some couches for the tv area and i'm good. well that, and get my table finished and felted.

im also converting my garage to a "second living room". The garage door is gone, now its a wall with a window and a door. I put one window on the other side and its got a window unit. Ive buillt enclosures around the water heater and washer dryer connections so you cant see them. I hired a guy to do some blown in insulatinon on the outer walls and ceiling. All thats left is tape, float, texture, paint. and carpet around the table. I love it. Ive got a 24 hour storage unit thats not to far up the street where i keep all the stuff that should be in the garage. (paint, lawn equipment, light bulbs, etc etc) If i need anything i can just go pick it up. the "garage" is just for pool now.

If you make it a fun place to practice youll practice more and your game will jump up fast. go for it.

I gotta say do it.

I gotta Gandy niner in mine.Installed some ac/heat this fall....One of those units you might find in a motel under the window.

My brother asks when the hell I'm gonna clean up the Sanford and son look because its still unfinished lol,but it works for me and the my pool playing buds.

I do plan on cleaning the look up and walling in the huge double door once I get a building built to house the yard stuff.

But yeah,do it.

I need the utility of having a garage door. I did remove the opener though.

Here's a few more pics Lenny.........

Garage pool room........

Hey Folks, I am thinking of converting the garage for use of a pool room. I have a 3 bedroom house with a two car attached garage. The only bedroom that is big enough is the master but I'm not giving that up! My truck does not fit in the garage anyway so why not? I really don't use the garage for anything except for tools, lawn mower and normal garage crap.

I have been looking at garage conversions on the net. If I were to do this I would not be able to use the garage at all. The new room would basically be just like an extra living room or.......a perfect pool room;) And, depending on the size of the table I would get it could be a pretty nice setup. I want a table in my house sooooo bad and this seems to be the best way to go about it.

Just wondering if anyone has done this or if anyone has some opinions on the subject.

Thanks, John
This is exactly what I have in Tucson Az. Depending on your climate, I would recommend getting duct work to have heating and cooling also. Hope it turns out great for ya.

The garage conversion is really nice as it is usually on the opposite end of the home where the bedroms are,so when playing pool you won't bother anyone........Insulate well..........
