Most definitely. If you ran them, you ran them. Well done, Cameron!

Thank you very much. I just wish I wasn't so hot and cold. Oh well, I've finally decided to get lessons within the next couple of weeks to pin point problems in my fundamentals. So hopefully by the end of the year I'll put up a 100 or more.

Hey everyone.... funny this thread came up. I just had a new high run the other day. 98 on four and a half inch pockets. I dogged the 100 on account of shooting the wrong shot instead of going for the secondary breaker. Other than that, my other bests were 75 and 54.

Congratulation Megan!

You are missed here in Valley Forge.:)

We have a new leader, none other than Mr Blackjack himself!

PS
Well done kjehle not too bad :D

Are you going to keep it as Top 10 Craig? At the moment, I'm hanging onto the bottom of the list in er ... 15th!

To be honest Im not bothered, as long as the list doesnt get to big and everyone only has one entry, see how it goes. Gives everyone a chance then. I just cant seem to find the time to have a go at the momet!

Craig

That run was done on easy equipment, for that reason I should be disqualified and removed from the list. Danny Harriman's run at DCC this year should be the high run (I believe it was 138) I'll get with him later today to verify that, unless someone here knows the exact number. Danny is a member of this forum and his achievement should be recognized.

High Runs

Man, we've got some good players on here. I would be afraid to try and run balls on my Brunswick Gibson (the Anniversary copy) with 4.5 inch pockets. I doubt I could get thru two racks in my present state of out-of-strokeness.

For a guy who made his living playing pool for the better part of ten years, I have exactly zero high runs. Well, not quite. You see, if you played pool for cash in the 60's and 70's, you played 9-Ball and One Pocket almost exclusively. So what has changed, right?

Occasionally I played some Banks and a lot of Eight Ball on bar tables. My only straight pool forays were in NY against a couple of old guys who refused to play 9-Ball and wouldn't even discuss One Pocket. So we played 14.1 and they creamed me. 35 and safe, 38 and safe, 27 and out, and I was a goner, losing $50 by a score of something like 100-26. and the next guy I may have gotten to 40. I swore off 14.1 with old men in NY.

I did occasionally practice 14.1 to improve my game and see how many I could run. I believe I had a few runs in practice in the 60's. Now fast forward a couple of years and I'm visiting my brother who is in med school at the U. of Florida in Gainesville. This is like 1969 or 70. I had gone thru the south, playing across Texas, Louisiana and all to get to Florida. And had done okay, arriving in Florida with a healthy bankroll of maybe $1,500.

In Gainesville, there is one poolroom downtown where I got a few small games like $5 9-Ball and $10 One Pocket. As I recall there was exactly one good player in town, whose name I don't remember. We played one time, broke even and I left him alone. Now at the student union, there was one guy who everyone thought was the greatest. The school champion, John something or other.

I played a few guys there who really couldn't play and the officials warned me about playing 9-Ball anymore. Everyone wanted me to play this John guy (by the way he finished second to Nick Varner in the collegiate champ-ionships one year). I only wanted to play him 9-Ball and One Pocket and he only wanted to play Straights. Finally we compromised. He would play me a Race To Eleven for $50 and I would then play him 100 points for $50.

I just wanted to see how he played and if he could hold up for the cash. After all, at 23 or 24 I was a seasoned player with three or four years on the road (or so I thought anyway at the time). So we played 9-Ball first and I got him 11-5 or 6. Now it's time for Straight Pool and I'm freerollin', already $50 winners.

The game begins with me breaking and he runs 42 off my break. Uh oh, I'm in trouble here. I answer with 9 or 10. lol. And he hits me with 30 something more. Double uh oh. I run maybe 17 or 18, and he starts to shoot again. Lo and behold, my brother walks in. He has never seen me play pool since we were kids. I have told him many times that I'm a good player, but I'm not so sure he believes me.

Bruce finds a seat near the table and nods to me. Maybe 30 or 40 people are watching. I am feeling humiliated right now. My turn to shoot and the score is exactly 91-28 his favor. I'll never forget that. So feeling angry about this turn of events, I begin to shoot. I'm mad at those balls now and drill them into the pockets. One rack down, the guy racks the balls, pretty soon two racks down. On and on I keep shooting, still mad at the thought of losing in front of my brother.

I'm not even keeping track of the score. One of the other kids is doing that. I just keep shooting, afraid to miss. Finally I hear someone say I need one ball. That's when I come out of my trance. I'm looking at a ball that's almost straight in, thinking about shape when he says it. Blam, I blast it in with emphasis. And pick up the other $50 from my now silent opponent.

I look at Bruce, who is smiling at me. We walk out together and he gives me the ultimate compliment. "You play a lot better than you used to".

So that's it, my all time high run is 72. Do I get on the nearly posthumous list?

Hi,
I just had a question for you guys,
Does anyone know if there's like any junior straight pool tournaments or something in existence? like an "under 18" or something? cause im 16 and im wondering if theres any way to capitalize on that. I know there are some 9-ball ones but any straight?
thanks

I just realised, where is The Straight Pool Guru, the Straight pool student himself, the karate kid of straight pool dedication....WillieBetMore!?

Come on willie, how many tons you had this week? ;)

first off you live in a good state to play 14.1!, and it's great your starting out playing it young. Believe me, you will be WAY ahead of alot of guys your age who don't play 14.1:D

Call a few local pool rooms for some info. If you can't find anything, play with the big boys and soak up as much knowledge as you can!

Gerry

OK, my "official" practice for the UPA 14.1 tournament is going to begin this week. Hopefully I can run a few and report the results. I've been playing a little more recently and am beginning to find a stroke, so I'd love to put up a nice number.

I was disappointed because two weekends ago I played a race to 500 and couldn't run anything more than about a 60. But it felt like almost every time I got to the table I was running between 25 and 40. So even though I didn't put anything substantial together, it felt like a solid game.

Anyway, thanks for doing this, Craig. Now I have something to shoot for :).

TheHalfaCouple,
I've already posted my less than stellar 44 (though being almost illiterate I neglected to PM you, just posted it about a page ago in this thread - probably all for the best, maybe people won't see it). It was, however, done in competition, on a medium tight table, against a former top 15 player (who now plays little). It put me out to an 80-39 lead, at which point we had to quit (allowing me the luxury of fantasizing that I might have held on to win if we had finished).

I now have about half a dozen runs in the 40's, but have still NEVER broken 50 in competition on tight tables. After seeing the best players at DCC playing on tight equipment, I can say that it REALLY makes a big difference. I saw about as many single digit runs (starting with ball in hand) as I did double digit runs. I saw no 100's in 4 hours of viewing. I saw Allen Hopkins set his break ball about 3 inches from the side pocket, then miss it with cue ball in hand in the kitchen. It certainly gives hope to the duffers like me.

In addition (as a further excuse), I do play a fair bit with some top pro's - if I don't want to just rack, it is often better to run 10 and play safe. I'm so feeble an opponent, that I win a fair percentage (I think more than 50% - but I'm often quite delusional) of safety battles. The pro's seem quite willing to take low percentage flyers a LOT - I don't think they feel threatened by my offensive skills (or lack thereof).

Well it was nice to be number two for a day, lol :D. This weekend im gonna see if I can get that 100. Maybe push past pooladdict and reclaim my number 3 spot.

That probably the best story I've heard in a long time...Jay the way you wrote it I pictured it like in a movie. Did you ever think about making some memoirs and have some Hollywood dude look it over?? That could be something huge.

... Danny Harriman's run at DCC this year should be the high run (I believe it was 138)...
139 on a table with 4.5-inch corner pockets with very deep shelves.

John Schmidt also particpates here, and he had an 87 in the DCC finals, but also had a 112 (I think) warming up for a 100-ball run for Accu-stats, and then ran a 102 or so for the camera.

WillieBreak50 - added you now :)

No prob Steve, looking forward to playing again myself and we'll have to have a hit when I come to NY again. The list is starting to look a lot better now, if anyone can find out John Schmidts best run this year I'll add it too.

So your saying it didn't look good when I was on top?!...uhuh...I see how it is...:D

My runs probably the best I'm gonna do. I almost broke my cue yesterday, seriously I had that thing by the throat. I ran into the 50's 3 times and kept doing VERY stupid things....I told myself 15 years ago I was only learning 14.1to help my 9ball game! ....now look at me playing 1pocket and the likes!
