2008 Player of the Year

If we're talking USA only I'd have to go with SVB. If we're talking world I'd have to go with Ralf.S. Johnnyt

Wow, for the men, it's a very close call between Immonen and Souquet, but I'd have to rate Souquet's win of the Derby City Nine Ball event as nearly being on a par with Immonen's win at the US Open, so I'll say that by capturing the World 8-ball championship, Ralf merits the nod. Busty had a big year, too, winning the DCC Master of the Table, coming second at the World 14.1 championships, and having a top ten in the US Open.

My list

1. Souquet
2. Immonen
3. Bustamante

For the women, Kelly Fisher rates the pick over Allison Fisher. Each won two WPBA events, but Kelly also managed two runnerup finishes and that rates the nod. Jasmin Ouschan's win at the WPBA Carolina Classic coupled with her phenomenal third place finish at the World 14.1 Championships is also something to marvel at.

My list

1. Kelly Fisher
2. Allison Fisher
3. Jasmin Ouschan

Immonen's win at the All-Japan Championships has me reconsidering. Hate to waffle, but I'm changing my order here for the men:

1. Immonen
2. Souquet
3. Bustamante

Mika is hot right now, red hot!

Same here, but SVB instead of Busta. It's Terry's fault, he put this up too early. Johnnyt

Appleton won the World 10 Ball and DCC Straight Pool plus strong finishes in US Open, world 8 ball and Euro Tour events.

Niels also won the world straigh pool of course.

Not sure about Busta but Mika and Ralph for sure.

This is my top 5 list:

1. Gabe Owen (playing better and more consistent than everybody else right now IMO)
2. Mika Immonen (US Open CHAMPION)
3. Niels Feijen (World Straight Pool Champion)
4. Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant (is trapped in the zone lately - a good place to be IMO)
5. Kelly Fisher (achieved the world's #1 this year, an IMO she will be #1 for a long time)

Blackjack, I agree with your assessment of Gabe Owen and Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant as I witnessed what their current level of play looks like up close and personal this past weekend.

There was another phenomenal match that took place this weekend by another American player and it needs mentioning because it was PHENOMENAL. (thread coming soon)

Joey I'm quite sure you're refering to Shannon's great run during his own event. It's good to see him back in form again.

Thank yall so much

I want to thank yall from the bottom of my heart for putting my name on the list of POY's for 2008...

I have fought very hard this year (with alot of adversity in my path) to get out there and do my very best at every tournament. Sometimes, I don't do so well in a competition and I get very down with myself. Seeing things like this makes me see that even with the occasional speed bump, I am still having a good year and gives me the fuel to keep on truckin.

Again, thank you so much for the acknowledgment...

God bless you all,
Hillbilly

You are the ironman of 2008 in my book!

You're one tough cookie buddy! That run you made at both titles last week was some of the best playing I saw all year. You played hard every match and had to play twice as much as anyone else. I think you played EIGHTEEN matches in total. And you never got worn out or appeared to be tired. And these were not short DCC style matches either. You wore me out just watching you :) .

One or two missed balls or you would have made both finals. Congratulations on a fine showing!

what do the players get for being voted player of the year? is there a monetary prize involved, a trophy or is just the recognition?

The 3 major pool magazines (Billiard Digest, InsidePool and Pool & Billiard) each name a P.O.Y. and usually do a 1-3 page story on that players year in review. They offer no prize or trophy, only ink and paper. It's more of the fans way of saying who was the over all baddest man in pool for the calendar year. I have made my own list of players of the year in my own notes I keep on pool. My list goes back to the year I was born (1959) and after having read all that had happened in those former years, I came up with my own list of POY. It's fun to look back and see who was dominating at various times.

Hopefully, someday, the great champions in our great sport will get more than a pat on the back and an atta boy for their accomplishments.

There was a time, Terry, when this was the case. The Camel Tour player of the year, earned, if memory serves, a $60,000 bonus, in both 1997 and 1998, and the supplementary bonus pool paid all the way down to the top 24. I believe Johnny Archer won the $60,000 in 1997 and Jose Parica won it in 1998. Too bad it didn't last.
