2014 US Open 9-Ball Championship: 128-player field, $1,000 entry fee

A 1000 won't keep them all out , also I can name many pro's that have not shot of winning so that's not just limited to the Am's

If he stays with a 128 player field and $1,000 entry, then I will go on record right now, and guarantee you that he won't get a full field.

Has there ever been a 128 player tournament that filled up at 1k a pop? Barry needs to hire or ask someone that has promoted 128+ tournaments and let him tell Barry that it won't work. The more I think of this the more I feel Barry really doesn't want to put on anything put a big tournament. Johnnyt

FYI:

Today Barry Behrman said he'd bet 10K that this event would fill up...
I aint lyin to ya..

To whom it may concern: Make him post.

I think a lot of the change is good and will work if the entry is lowered and don't pay as deep. I mean, CSI puts on the Swannie 128 players in 2 days. Add one more day to make it more comfortable for all. A 1000k and going to pay deep with a 6 day tournament sounds like this is the "I really don't want to do it format". Johnnyt

Johnny, just for the record, the Swanee field is 192 players over 2 days.

When you cut the field in half, you better at least add more money to the pot more than what it was originally. Raising the entry fee is to make up for the dead money from the amateurs who think they have a chance at playing. That is fine by getting rid of the dreamers but not at the expense of raising the entry fee to make up for the lack of players.

Trust me, he has this figured out where he would still have enough money in the pot to entice players and get rid of the dead ringers at the same time.

This will work and he will get a full tournament, IF and that is a big one, he at least raises the added money portion of the tournament.

I hope he is not stupid enough to count on the players' own money to make the pot huge. With a raised entry, the promoter also must raise his added pot like the players.

When you don't, or can't add enough money to make it worth while for players to show up, then the answer is to make it a bigger ring game with the players OWN money? Doesen't anyone understand this format is all about getting the players to foot the bill for the prize money?

Basically this.

Full field leaves 106k to Barry after payouts. Now I don't know his overhead but that a lot of money. Ive never ran a tournament of this caliber but im pretty sure players will be paid as long as the field in full. Personally I think it won't but then again Im a banger

FAIL...math much?

Mark Gregory and I have talked about this very subject at least 100 times, there IS a way to get a 256 player field, with more money than any US Open has ever paid out, but I'm so sick of this shit that I'm not even going to sugest how to run it.

Glen

ya don't suggest it then.....make it happen

So has Barry convinced anyone that he will get 128 @ 1k a pop after going on the Internet radio? Johnnyt

Barry has read this thread and others about the Open, and here is what he has to say:

Barry Behrman took some time on Thursday to respond to some of the comments regarding his recent US Open announcement...

From Mr. Behrman: "Thank you all for your replies and concerns on this years U.S. Open. I have read every post thus far so allow me to explain.

First of all, the most important factor is to have the entire event in one room only. And now, by having 9 tables in the main ball room with the same set up with less tables on each side, 4 tables each side, and almost a mirror image of the conference center, viewing for our VIP seats and general admissions will be grand for all.

Also with 128 players max, this will allow us to run the event beginning Monday morning instead of Sunday.

Match times Monday thru Friday will be 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. and 3 P.M. to 5 P.M. for day matches, and only two rounds of prime time matches at 8 P.M. and 10 P.M. Isn’t that wonderful. Either go to bed or to Q Masters a lot sooner.

My expenses back at the Marriot will be much less as compared to the past events, due to the electrical already being paid for, less staff and much more. This will still enable me to add $50,000.00 to the entry fees.

Having $1,000.00 entry fees while paying down to 48th place receiving double the entry at $2,000.00, will insure a field of top players and by leaving First Place at $25,000.00, that should be enough for our Champion as his endorsements will be worth much more.

I am so certain the field will fill at 128 players, that I’m willing to put up $10,000.00 if anyone cares to take me up on that bet.

Again, we all want to be in one ballroom and now we can, in a room which is 60x120 instead of 100x200, and everyone will have fantastic seats.

Also by paying deep we will still get many very good players that may not be Superstars of today and by winning 2 matches on the winners side they win an automatic $2,000.00. The payout increments really look evenly spread out and attractive.

No one pays past 32 spots with 128 players except myself going to 33-48 at $2,000.00.

Lastly, I would like to remind everyone that all players were paid on time last year with all funds coming from the U.S. Open account, which we will use again. Sixty days out, Suntrust Bank will set up an account along with myself.

I read every post and will continue to and I appreciate your advice as well as your good wishes. Please give me more fuel and let’s have a great 39th U. S. Open!

VIP seat info and players entry fees will be available soon."

I wont bet 10k but i'll bet 1k- Any partners out there?

Biggest flaw i see now is the length of the event. Too many days makes expenses plus entry fairly prohibitive

I agree about the length. The Super Billiards Expo is 4 days in length, and that's plenty, requiring one to only have to worry about 2 days of missing work if one wants to attend the entire festivities.

But he wants to have a comfortable venue with good times for matches. Logistically speaking, this new setup sounds much better, I think.

I like the idea that Barry is trying to make changes for the better.

I think a US Open is better than no US Open. Are Barry's steps the right ones, I don't know. With the state of pool these days it is either evolve or die. I hope it is a resounding success.
