2014 us open unpaid prize money

I am playing catch up here, but how did it come to pass that this gentleman named Barry came to own "the U.S. Open." I take it that he acquired intellectual property. From whom? Are the details known -- extent of his acquired rights, any retention of rights by the seller? I have the same question about Dragon's ownership (or use) of the term "World Tournament of 14.1." Thanks in advance for any details from anyone who has hard facts.

Barry started the US Open 9-ball tournament http://www.usopen9ballchampionships.com/history.php

Dragon started a 14.1 tournament and co-opted the name. There are a lot of threads discussing the legitimacy of calling Dragon's tournament a "World" event.

Newsflash - I have been in communication with Barry the last few days expressing my displeasure about the unpaid players, and he has been less than cordial with me, saying that I don't have his back. Well enough about that, it goes with the territory.

He sent me an e-mail this morning saying he plans to retire and sell both his poolroom and the U.S. Open. Whether that happens or not we will just have to wait and see. I suspect the fallout from this last Open has caused him to rethink the future.
The US Open isn't worth a penny. Any "good will" created in regards to the brand is destroyed. It's clearly insolvent since he owes money every year. As of now, the value of the US Open is negative due to zero good will and negative cash flow with an existing deficit on the books.

Open a tournament tomorrow called American 9ball Championship. Done.

I'm sorry, I can't answer any of your questions. I'm just the messenger here. I tend to agree with Spider, that the U.S. Open in its current state has no value. Of course, I'm sure Barry would disagree with that.

I do know a little about retaining a "name" for an event, since I went through it with the Los Angeles Open 9-Ball years ago. If you stop using that name you will lose your rights to it. That can happen in as quickly as one year as I recall.

Thanks. Do you or anyone know whether the name/title "U.S. Open" was used -- for 9 ball -- by any other person or organization prior to Barry's using it?

really?

Uh-oh; it's finally happened.........all you naysayers have killed the U.S. OPEN.....Barry is giving it up.....

GOOD...I Hope I helped kill it in some small way...or big way. If so, I was very happy to do so. Johnnyt

PS: He won't be able to give the OPEN away and Q-masters is probably 20% of the 3 million he's asking. Someone is smoking some good $hit.

When does KT get out of "stir" ? ... Maybe he could take over and run it further into the ground.

Jeez, so Barry seems to have been lying the whole time. Now he has to do installment payments on $3,000. At least you got part of it, my guess is it might be all you get based on his track record.

If Barry or Roberta read these forums : Shame on you Barry your a disgrace. Your excuses are pathetic to say the least.

I will repeat myself from my earlier post. I will not be purchasing any streaming of any further US Opens. This is the only way for me to punish this type of behavior since I am unable to attend in person.

Maybe it's time for the US Open to just fold up shop.

I believe the US OPEN name is worth something. 39 years of past history and champions make it so imo. The fact that muddles it imo, is if he really wants to quit, he will 'abandon the name' effectively and someone may wait him out and get it for free.

If he had 72 brand new Diamond tables, that would be less than 1/2 million...but he don't. Johnnyt

yeah that reminds me...

It was pretty funny... The pool hall I came up in hasn't existed for 17 years or so, but it was corner pocket in Redlands Ca, afaik it was the only pool hall ever in Redlands.

The owner had put his house in his gf's name and was pocketing the all cash coming and cooking the books to be making a loss..

Then he tries to sell the pool hall for 80K I hear him telling these potential buyers that it makes such and such amount but since it's all cash, the books don't reflect that...

Needless to say, no one ever buys it, but two months after it closes, a friend of ours comes in and opens it back up, same name etc... He just bought the pool tables from the previous owner and reopened it.

He didn't enforce the same rules though and it turned into a gang hang out and closed a few months later.

But it's funny what people may think something is worth or may just be thinking they might be able to convince someone of what something's worth and then are forced to close down and it ends up being almost free...lol
