2014 World 9-Ball Championship

Why would any American player go to Qatar? They have been funding terrorists for years that want to kill as many Americans as they can. They let them live in their country and admit they do so. I don't think much of any of the American players that went there. Johnnyt

Because they are trying to make a living and this is one if the best paying tournaments in the world. Major tournaments are getting less and less every year so why wouldn't they go this tournament? A pool player who's trying to make a living is not going to boycot a tournament because of politics. And I'm 100 percent sure they could care less what some guy on az thinks of them.

Qatar? Are you thinking of the right sand dune country?

So can anyone explain to me how the stages and qualifiers work?

TOURNAMENT FORMATS
Stage 1 qualifying tournaments : Single elimination, race to 7, alternate break.

All applicants are guaranteed to participate in the 1st chance, 2nd chance and 3rd chance tournaments for 12 qualifiers into Stage 2.

Stage 2 group round event:
Double elimination, race to 9, alternate break

There are 128 players in the main event (Stage 2) of the W9BC. In the group round, the players are divided into 16 groups of 8 players each. 4 players from each group advance into the Last 64 final round. 2 from winner’s bracket will be seeded into Final Round according to their results from group rounds. 2 from loser’s bracket will be drawn randomly.

Final Round by the Last 64 to the Final, the competition becomes single elimination with race to 11 and 13 in the final. All matches are by the alternate break.

My predictions for the "3rd Chance" round...

Group A - Kiamco
Group B - Manalo
Group C - Pulpul
Group D - Gallego/Ting

Not sure how Chen Hsin Ting plays (in Group D), but considering his three countrymen made in the first round, I'm guessing he also plays pretty good.

Looks like I picked players from the wrong Asian archipelago. The Japanese are dominating today, securing 3 spots already. Nice to see former World Champion Yukio make it back after beating Pupul in a good match. Japan can take all 4 spots today, but Gallego is currently beating Hideaki 4-2.

The Japanese making last surge ..4 in 4 final qualifiers. and 3 already won and qualified for main draw
It was great to see is ex-World Champ Akagariyama finally qualified after playing 3 chances and total of 11 matches 9races to 7)
It is shocking that an ex-World Champ from 2011 still have to play qualifiers while others less capable players are just nominated by their country association to meet the country quota and they get into main draw without having to play qualifiers.
But it may be blessing in disguise for Akagariyama cos he sure had lots of match practice on the tables these 4 days which makes him more ready for the main draw

Things aren't that simple, Johnny.
Did you know that Qatar pledged a hundred million in aid to Katrina victims?

(I don't want them to shoot one barrel at me)

I'll spot any terrorist the 6 and the break if they want to "shoot pool, and not people"......the stipulations are they have to "post" and they can't be "ticking". ;) (I don't want them to shoot one barrel at me)

"if we don't play the terrorists might win" :groucho:

It appears Kiamco and Faraon still made it through to Stage 2, having had the best records of those who didn't win a bracket. I wouldn't be too surprised if one of them ends up winning the whole thing, lol.

I don't think Kiamco has much of a chance to win. He is considerably outclassed by many people in this event including a fair number from his own country. I would say there are about 25 people in this event who are all pretty much elite level and have roughly an equal chance of winning the event, Kiamco is not one of those top guys.

I would say there is a 50% chance that the winner of the event is from one of the guys in the top 25.

The other 103 guys in the event are splitting the other 50% chance between them (albeit not equally).

Did two of the original 116 in Stage 2 drop out / no show?

There are other Middle Eastern Countries that have been very generous to Louisana. Kuwait is one that comes to mind. The Kuwaiti people generously donated highly customized emergency vehicles to the Red Cross operating here in Louisiana. My wife was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and she is the one who told me about the magnificent vehicles that the Kuwaiti people donated and I witnessed that with my own eyes.

No, it is not that simple. Perhaps pocket billiards can be one of the bridges that allows us to learn how to live in peace with one another.

I agree.

My last post was a bit facetious because there has been recent history of World Champions that have started out the WPC tournament on the wrong foot only to end up winning the whole thing. Last year, Thorsten lost his opening match in the preliminary rounds before going undefeated the rest of the way. I believe the same thing happened to Alcano when he won it a while back.

But you're right, this field is going to be super tough. Don't think either Kiamco/Faraon has much of a chance, but who knows.
