That's the W9B champs. If talking abt recent years those not in picture - Wu, Alcano
If talking about all time W9B champs then many not in picture like Earl, Archer, Chao, Varner, 2 Japanese etc :)

Isn't the group round of Stage 2, which starts in about two hours, spaced out a little too much?

They have 16 groups of 8 players. Each group involves just 10 matches. So that's a total of 160 races to 9, and they have 14 tables. Yet it's spaced out over 4 days, playing at just 4 times on the first two days (12:00, 2:00, 4:00, and 6:30 local time) and 3 times on the second two days (12:00, 2:00, and 4:00).

The players who win their first match today have to wait two days to play their next match.

Seems like the group round could easily be played in 2 or 3 days instead of 4. Could stretching it out so much be a cultural thing (e.g., not playing at night)?

Edit -- And, actually, the same comment applies to the single-elimination round of 64 players, That involves only 63 matches, and it is spread over 3 days when it could be handled easily in 2.

In Stage 1, it looks like Chua lost in the semi-finals twice and the finals once. Hideaki lost in the finals twice.

Wow, some last minute twist - probably one of the qualified 116 who got cold feet looking at strong field and felt he had no chance to finish deep enough to recover his expenses
Johann has many lives and his joining group stage is great as young kids like him , Ko and wang can will shake up the tourney :)

The tables seem to be a tougher test than in recent years. I like how it's making some of the matches turn out. Orcullo and Klatt are in an absolute grind it out dog fight right now.

Having referees at every table racking the balls is the only way that any major pool event should ever be contested. Rack your own is ruining our game. Thankfully, it is not permitted at the World 9-ball Championships.

I totally agree.....the game will never grow up without refs.

I can just imagine how some the American players would treat refs/rackers. Only way to stop that is give them the power to take a game or match away from them. A lot of the players don't ever want a racker and the promoters don't want the extra expense. Johnnyt

Totally agree. It adds to the overall professionalism of the event.

Not contradicting anything said but current economics pretty much rule out a ref for each table on a self sustaining event. You have to crawl before you walk and a nice start would be from the semis on out.

.... so have a ref racking the balls once the event gets down to eight players left. Rack your own can be eliminated in the rounds that ultimately crown a champion.

yeah im with you 100%-all u need is that one guy to ref/rack the semis on if they aren't played simultaneously also. Pretty non impacting economically especially if u have a competent local ref
