2024 World Pool Championship

Elvis and the Colonel…..oops, sorry…it’s Fedor and Johan

Yes, intentional scratches are not that rare. They usually occur when a player faces a very low percentage kick, jump or masse. In that situation, a player often takes a scratch intentionally to tie up some balls or do something else to make opponent's work more difficult.

Most people wouldn't call a foul a scratch unless the cue ball goes in a pocket. Pretty rare that would happen when trying to tie up balls. When it does, it wouldn't be intentional because where the cue ball ends up on the foul is irrelevant.

In games where you have to shoot down table from the kitchen, there's a role for a strategic scratch in rare circumstances.

Pretty sad that you can find a way to turn one of the greatest finals we’ve seen in a while into some sort of political statement. Particularly when you seem ignorant of the circumstances around what you’re even complaining about…
All non-sense aside it has to be a pivotal moment for Fedor to hear the American anthem. I don't know much about him but US citizenship will open up the entire free world to him. Its the most powerful passport a person can hold. He will always have his native land in his heart BUT America will be the country that changed his life in the most profound way.

He is exercising the American Dream like our ancestors did before. I'll be in his corner.

Guess it's a regional thing. Where I live, it would often be called a scratch.

Historically, a scratch resulting from failure to meet the requirements of a shot was known as a "table scratch," differentiating it from a scratch in which the cue ball ended up in a pocket.

You're right, though, in pro nine ball, it seems the word scratch is no longer in use by referees. Whether the cue ball goes in the pocket or not, the term scratch is very rarely heard anymore.

No guarantee it would have changed the outcome, but the cue ball's path here was a few millimeters away from forcing Fedor to kick/jump.

I agree….he‘s got a lot of sporting events to complain about ….and most teams are multinational.

Kaci's miss in the finals. "The most expensive mistake in 9-ball history." Score hill-hill.
Defense and kicking may be Kaci's only weaknesses. He can run the racks with the best of them, meaning Josh and Fedor, but cannot beat opponents to the shot as often as they do. This was not the first time that weakness in the tactical part of the game cost him a major title.

Going back to the semis of the 2022 World 10-ball, Kaci played Szewczyk in the semifinal and the winner would be heavily favored to beat Tevez in the final. At double hill, the Kaci/Szewczyk match would come down to defense and kicking and when Kaci whiffed on a one-rail kick at the three-ball, it spelt the end of his chances, as Szewczyk ran out and went on to win the title. Time stamp 2:17:33, here it is:

As we've seen, the tightening of the pockets in Matchroom majors has placed a greater emphasis on safety play sequences than ever before. Per AtLarge stats, at least one safety was played in 51% of the racks contested at the WPC.

Did you guys see the awards ceremony? The emcee interviewed Fedor first, then Kaci, then Fedor again. When he was finished with Kaci, and heading back to Fedor for the second time, Kaci says "hold on", and called him back. Kaci was on the mic again, and said "I won 2 World 10 ball championships". This was in response to the emcee saying something to the effect of "you'll win a world championship soon". I'm paraphrasing this, as it's from memory.

I was laughing to myself, and wondering what Emily's reaction was. I bet this will be cut off from the highlights reel.

I know I'm late in the post. I don't see the national anthem for Fedor as woke at all. At some point, unless you're indigenous, either we or our forbearers swore allegiance to this country and came from somewhere for a better life as Fedor has. My paternal grandfather was born in Ireland, fought in WW1 for USA. Maternal grandfather, Quebec. WW2. They earned their anthems. There's a lot going on where Fedor's from. Pretty complicated for somebody his age. I certainly wouldn't want my son in that mess. Give him a chance.

The emcee kind of condescended Eklent. He told a 2 time major winner to keep trying. You'll be a champ someday. Kaci's got to be a proud competitive man. He set the record straight in the moment. Nothing against Fedor. That was a FU moment to the uneducated mc after a devastating loss.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the emcee had never heard of the tour before now. Probably didn’t even know Kaci’s story aside from the bit he was told.

Matchroom needs to figure out a way to acknowledge success in the other pool disciplines while still being able to emphasize the importance of their own events. At a minimum, they should be mindful of how they word things - it is a bad look for players to correct them during broadcasts, but what Kaci did was totally fine in my book. Even in the bit they showed where Kaci was describing his injury, Kaci talked about how the first thing he did when he came to was ask the nurse if he'd ever recover enough to win another world title. It'd confuse me a bit as a viewer if I didn't know any better.

On a related note, it was also kind of awkward and funny when they showed Efren coming into the arena for the world nine-ball championship and then him bantering back and forth with Shane and Scott Frost about playing a set of one-pocket.

I think the commentators gave good coverage to other pool events during the matches. I was a little surprised by that. Evidently they have not been told that pool is nine ball only.

Nope, not late in the post. I think its good to express the significance of the US anthem after what Gorst has been through and what lies ahead for him. My grandmother immigrated to northern Minnesota from Finland.

The last week also solidifies Kaci in the highest tier of players in the world. In my mind, FSR, SVB, the Ko bros, and a few others are just a half speed below Filler, Gorst, and Kaci.

That's fair. I think Karl, JJ, and Scott do a decent job at this...it's some of the others that aren't pool players that are a bit cringey at times

Hopefully someone else can confirm this but it seems that Kaci and Gorst decided to split the money for 1st/2nd. I'm not sure Matchroom were aware of this but they received complaints from a lot of top players about the prize breakdown ($250k for 1st, $100k for 2nd).

Not sure how I feel about this (if it's true) I guess that as long as one of them didn't 'dump' and it certainly didn't appear like that in any way in this final, what they want to do with their winnings before or after the fact is really their own business.

A saver in the 25K - 50K range would have been pretty normal when the prize differential was so high, but chopping the entire pot before the final seems unlikely to have happened. Still, you never know. After all, we're dealing with pool players here.
