$4000 Billiard University (BU) Exam I 100 Challenge

Anybody working on the Exam this weekend?

I might take a stab at the 90 if I can find the time and courage.

Good luck,
Dave
Good luck! 90 is 3 points away for you! I'm definitely going to give it a run or two as well.

I also talked to a buddy on my league team and am trying to figure out how we can get others to compete given that I've already got the table set up for the test. I'll see if I can get any takers.

It doesn't sound like much, but that extra 3 points will require every bit of skill and focus that I can muster, along with a little luck.

I'm definitely going to give it a run or two as well.
I'm glad to hear it. What do you predict is the best you can do before the end of the Challenge?

Sounds good. Thank you for trying to get others involved.

Catch you later,
Dave

What do you think about encouraging Jin to enter the Exam I Challenge? I know he doesn't have much of a chance to place in the top three, but it would be fun for everybody to see him tackling the whole exam on video. If you and Jin think this is a good idea, mention it to Samm so she can help.
Isn't that the truth..... here is my son taking on the wagon wheel at 4m 30s into the video:

That is so cute ... and so awesome!

You must be very proud,
Dave
What would be even more awesome is seeing a video of Jin doing the BU Exam Challenge now, and then seeing another video 10 years from of him winning a future BU Exam Challenge after he becomes a world beater!

Regards,
Dave

We will definitely discuss this with Samm, we are headed to Wyoming next weekend for the juniors tournament and then after a couple days going to PA for SBE. Once we are back and the dust settles, I'm sure Jin will be wanting to tackle this challenge.

And yes, I am very proud of Jin, we are very lucky to be surrounded by many encouraging people from Felt Bar including customers, to people like Samm and many others. It hasn't been easy for him for many different reasons but he is in it for the long term and gets more determined with every loss or missed shot.

Weekend tournaments at Felt Bar have a tough list but Jin has gone from 0-2 every tournament to now winning some matches, sometimes outlasting his pops :grin:

From the first time picking up a pool cue 10 months ago, it's amazing to watch him every step of the way, tackling and conquering so many things but best of all, we get to do something we both enjoy all week/weekend together.

If you want to stop in Fort Collins either on the way there or the way back, I'd be happy to record Jin running through Exam I at my place. PM or e-mail me if you want to set this up.

That's awesome! I hope he keeps his passion for the game long into the future.

I lost my camera setup last on last trip to south.
I'm sorry to hear that. Luckily, video cameras are not as expensive as they used to be.

How long this Challenge is going on?
The Challenge is open through the end of July, 2018, so you have time. I hope you enter. With a solid effort, you should be able to place (assuming we don't get a bunch of pros entering, which seems unlikely).

Good luck,
Dave

Lazy to set up this specific test. Not lazy in general. That was the meaning of my post.

Danny, you are an absolute lock to win the 2k. Let’s see if you do it and prove me wrong.

Thanks for kind words, I am happy to see their alternative to the bar scene, also looks like some decent people aboard the test ship (BU exam). So i support your new (welcome to the digital world). I'm a scratch however, I have more interest in 3 cushion these days. Be careful usedtobe bout making generalizations directed at pro's, too many on here try to demonize or DIVIDE themselves from the Professional players. Your a lock until you understand that people are not to be labeled or divided, again I hope your new world has success. Plus i understand bout traveling expenses and the advantages your format has in relation to the road.

Did you, your buddy, or others give the Exam a try this weekend? If so, how did it go?

I tried 5 attempts, but did too poorly on the draw drill to make a good effort at my PR (87). After doing poorly on the draw drill in the first 4 attempts, I practiced the draw drill a lot before my 5th attempt at the Exam. When I got to the draw drill, I overdrew the ball once from position 7 and twice from position 6 (ending with a score of 5, which is not good enough for me to continue). That was disappointing, but I was happy to not come up short or miscue, as I was doing in the previous 4 attempts. Then I was too tired to try again. One of these days, I hope to start Exam I with a 40 out of 40 (after the draw drill). Then I will feel confident to beat (maybe even crush) my PR.

Regards,
Dave

I'm going to keep bumping this thread, hoping more AZB'ers will enter for a shot at the cash.

The only thing I'm working on this weekend is that pesky draw drill (my nemesis).

Good luck,
Dave

The Billiard University (BU) just announced an Exam challenge with money prizes.
Here it is: $4000 Billiard University (BU) Exam I 100 Challenge.

You just need to post a video of yourself taking BU Exam I (Fundamentals Exam). There is no cost to enter. We are paying out $4000 to the top three scores (including a $500 bonus available for a perfect score of 100).

I hope some AZB'ers win some of the money. I just posted a video with a score of 82 to give you guys something to beat. My goal is to reach 90 before the end of the contest, and I really hope somebody (maybe a pro) can post a perfect score of 100. Hopefully, the $2500 top prize is high enough to attract some top players, given that no travel or other expenses are required.

The BU Exams are excellent practice and I always feel my game elevate a little when I dedicate focused practice time to the Exams.

Good luck and have fun,
Dave

Our baby was born last weekend, so I haven’t had a chance to work on anything pool related. I get a few minutes to go upstairs and hit some, but only in very short durations. No word from anyone on my team or league attempting. Most don’t have tables, and of the ones that do, a lot are 8’.

I’m hoping to get a little time in the near future to try again. I’m hoping to break 80 next time. And, like you, I also see the 40/40 mark a key to high runs. No reason not to score
Perfect with ball in hand...

Congratulations! That's awesome.

That's quite understandable.

I look forward to seeing it.

No reason not to score Perfect with ball in hand...
I agree, but it is still very difficult to have perfect focus, perfect aim, perfect tip position, and perfect speed on all 100 shots, especially with the wagon wheel drill where any pocket cheat, too little or too much draw, or too much or too little speed will cause misses on the shots to balls 6 through 10.

Good luck,
Dave

PS: I have gotten a little frustrated with some of my recent attempts; but after I take a break from the Exam, I usually get excited again to attempt to break my PR. I need to master the draw-shot drill first.

FYI to those interested, I just posted a new video on YouTube about the Challenge. Included is a perfect-score run-through of the entire Exam. This doesn’t count as an official entry because it took me multiple sessions (I.e., it wasn’t an uninterrupted run of the entire Exam), but it was excellent practice. And now I feel like I should be able to improve on my best score to date. It also convinced me that a better player that puts in some dedicated practice should be able to get a clean 100.

Check it out. That Wagon Wheel drill makes it really tough to get a perfect score, but I now think it is possible.

Good luck,
Dave

So Jin and I just got back from the Expo this AM around 3am'ish and when I woke up, he was already on the table. I asked him if he wanted to just play a few racks but he wanted drills to sharpen his shot making and cue ball control.

What better than exam 1? We didn't film it..... we didn't re-do anything but we kept scores in our notebook. Jin got a 38 with plenty of room to improve on shots that he usually gets.

Dr Dave.... we will talk to Samm about taking an official exam soon, not to get anything in a contest, just to see where he is at officially for under 1 year of playing.

Sounds good. And when he completes both exams on video and/or with Samm, post his results and I'd be happy to send you a free BU diploma (for a total Exam I + Exam II score of 55 or above, which I think he will attain). Maybe you can frame it and give it to Jin as a gift or just as a surprise.

Catch you later,
Dave

FYI, I just posted a new video with a score of 88. Here it is:

Dr. Dave - BU Exam I - 88 - 4/17/2018

This is a new Exam I PR for me; although, I was still a little disappointed after giving away several "easy" points. Although, I got a 17 on the wagon wheel drill, which is a good score for me. I still can't consistently score above a 6 on the draw drill. My goal is to reach 90 before the end of the contest, but it will take a lot more work. The additional points don't come easy.

Let's see some more scores and videos from others. The BU Exams are excellent practice, and some of you guys might win some cash in the Challenge.

Good luck,
Dave

Dr Dave, you are a lock to win your own contest;)
I certainly hope that is not the case. I want to see a 100.

I think the top performers from the 2016 Challenge (young German pro Tobias Bongers, Denver pro Marc Vidal, and AZB’s own SidePocket) plan to enter. I don’t think my top score will will be high enough to match what they can do. And I still hope we can get some high-profile pros to enter.

Good shooting.
Thanks.

Catch you later,
Dave

I will keep bumping this periodically. I don't want people saying after the contest: "I didn't know about this ... I wish I had entered ... I could have scored higher than that 2nd or 3rd place person." That's the kind of stuff I heard after we ran the Bank Bend Challenge a couple of years ago.

The current score to beat in the $4000 Billiard University (BU) Exam I 100 Challenge (for the top prize) is 88 out of 100.

Good luck,
Dave
