8 Ball BAR TABLE "RULES" AGAIN!

the last two pool tournaments i entered were "bar table rules" and i vowed to never enter them again. but this tournament tonight was on nice 8'+ tables and i ASSUMED it was a BCA rule game. so i warmed up and another guy came in who was not a total hack and he and i batted balls around. i won four in a row then let him off the hook and he won two games. i then won the last. it was the last because i went to pay the tourny fee and learned that they were playing bar-table "rules". NO WAY i am ever making that mistake again. i declined to play, finished my warm-up game (which i won) and left. here's what happened the last two times i played bar-table "rules";

i entered a "tournament" a few months ago under such an agreement and hoped for the best. i played terrible but good enough to beat the cigar munching rednecks. however, when one of them sent the cue on an epic journey around the table and into a pocket, i found myself with ball-in-hand behind the head-string. well, i KNEW this would happen because my last object ball ( 8-ball game) was in the jaws behind the head-string. so i did the old, shoot the ball into the side-rail with lots of english and sunk the jawed ball only to be left with a character-builder, full table shot with the 8-ball at the foot rail. i missed it and the cigar chomper had a gimmie victory. that really pissed me off because i knew better than to play by "bar table rules". but i decided to get back into tournament stroke just yesterday and searched the net for the closest game. it was about 45 miles away....90 miles round trip. i finally got there and i'll be damned if it wasn't the same bar table rules crap AGAIN. i drove so far that i figured i'd stay and hope for the best.

they had only three bar tables and the place was a real dive, full of cig sucking rednecks and the "urinal" was a tub filled with ice. but i drove a long way to get there so i stayed and played. in my first match i easily beat the lady who organized the event , running the table after she broke and missed. my next opponent had a reeel fancy pool cue but he didn't understand the game. i won the flip and broke. there were some clusters that i couldn't break so i made a nice little safety combo rail shot hitting my ball first, and sinking his, leaving my ball blocking that pocket. i now had two foot-rail pockets blocked and he took over. he did a fair job of dealing with the situation but blew an easy long shot and i took over. by luck he left me with a tough back-angle bank. i chose to play safe, hitting my ball to the rail and leaving him behind the 8 ball with no shot. he starts whining! i tell him that "it was a safety". he doesn't get it.... so he gets up and dribbles the ball to the rail without hitting his ball which is a SCRATCH! oh, but not in this tourny... i told the organizer that he scratched but she didn't get it either. i said if you allow someone to intentionally scratch the game could go on forever with each of us tapping the ball on infinitum. she didn't get that either. in fact, nobody there got it. i packed up my cue and left, vowing NEVER to play at a dive with IDIOTS ever again. it's only real pool halls and BCA rules for me.[/QUOTE]

i emailed robert byrne about my experience and he was nice enough to respond. i don't think that he'd mind me posting this amusing story;

I quit playing in bars decades ago--I don't like the equipment, the atmosphere, the rules, and often the players. Some bar players, for example, think playing safe is beneath contempt, and in one case I know about a friend of mine with a wooden leg was punched and knocked to the floor by his opponent, who said something like "We don't play safe here ......." Bob

U drove 45 miles and could only find a a dive with 3 bar tables? U must live in the middle of nowhere. And if you do then the only way to get the competetions u want is to move.

and if it pissed you off that much you shouldve just kept tapping the cueball back and forth, why pack up and leave? U stuck around that long u might as well have had some fun with them.

It's good policy to forget the bar rule BS. The trick, I find, is to think outside of the box (so to speak) and make sure you exploit the unfairness of these rules to full effect. Show them on the table why the rules are garbage.

For example, in your first story you were stuck on the head rail and had to shoot an 8 on the foot rail. You're not supposed to make it, you sell out if you miss, and they will cry if you safe. So you aim at it pretending like you wanna make a thin cut, let the cue ball miss completely and bank back up to the head rail. Then let him try the impossible dream shot and sell out to YOU.

Extra creativity points awarded for caroming the cue ball into the corner pocket while banking the 8 behind the head string, forcing him to kick at it.

I have never really played bar pool so it is hard for me to understand this "safeties not allowed" attitude. It's probably the same type people that consider the check-raise in poker to be a dirty lowdown scoundrel move.

Safeties are allowed. You just have to remember to curse and stomp your feet, look up to the ceiling and ask the world how could you have possibly missed that shot!

You must really stink to miss so many shots, it's a wonder you beat me! Why my 3 best friends can't even do that, and they can shoot twice before missing.

yeah, i'm out in the middle of hicksville. moving to florida soon though.

i considered that option but the place was filled with cig smoke and i didn't want to waste any more life on these idiots.

all that would have accomplished is a bar fight where i was one and they were many. when i spoke up about the idiocy of the "rules" drunks began converging. lol.... i could have taught them a lesson and dragged the game out for hours but what's the point? i wanted to get back into playing tournaments not arguing with drunks.

i've played in so many of those tourneys and robbed them its not even funny, and have came up on situations like that many times......

yes in many places they look at safety shots with:mad:....but they LOVE LOVE LOVE to go for it....

when they leave you some crap like that then "GO" for it, but don't really go for it...meaning what you should have done was put less english on the CB and instead of hitting your ball in the CB just lies up stuck to the end rail....

now redneck has a bank shot which % he is not going to make....% he's going to leave it laid up perfect for you b/c now your balll is still just sitting in the hole....

make your ball, make the 8, take the money....

they got crazy asss rules you just have to learn how to "play" by them, hell many times in situations just like this one your opponent will scratch on purpose just to dik you over so he can steal an easy shot on the money ball ....but you are right its not worth the time anymore

We have hicksville here as well. They're just better informed on the rules of pool. Hope you plan on living near a more populated town. Orlando or Miami is a hotbed for tourny's. :thumbup:

so he gets up and dribbles the ball to the rail without hitting his ball which is a SCRATCH!
He pushed.:eek:

thats the thing joey in most of the bars there is no penalty for pushing...so they do things like that to you, they will scratch on purpose b/c your ball is in the kitchen...and your ball is not always sitting in the hole for easy pickings

there are holes in their rules so they can cheat you

oh, that brings back a nice memory. when i was 15 i had a friend, gary. he kept bragging about what an amazing pool player was his grandfather. so one fine day i find myself in gary's basement playing his grandfather. everyone else was upstairs. all i needed was the 8ball. ol grandad was in a fix and the 8ball in the kitchen so he just sends the cue into the side-pocket for a scratch, forcing me behind the head-string. rather than so the same, i kicked the cue off of the foot-rail and back down to the kitchen pocketing the 8ball in the corner. i was ready for another game but after seeing that, grandad called it quits. lol....

I just salt them away for future reference

I lose a game here and there when they make up the rules as they go. The fun part is when I use "their" rule against them a little later! :D :thumbup: :D

It's funny you said that. The last tournament I played with no rules the guy I played in the finals played all kinds of tricks like I didn't know what he was doing. I didn't say anything and just continued to play. In the last game I purposely reserved one shot that used "his rule" and it won me the game. He complained to the TD but that went no where.

I could have won that game without that move but I needed to show him that I knew what he was doing in the other games.

I think you are better off finding some friends who like to play for money rather than playing in a tournament that doesn't do BIH.

Sometimes you have to play whats there and by their rules. Most that play without BIH are lesser players and will usually lose their cash.

I agree but the topic creator had a bad exp with playing the standard bar rules. If you can get a money game going with a friend you don't have to play the silly rules and get added pressure of playing for some coin :)
