9000+ Members Could Help pool

With the 9000+ members here on AZ Billiard it’s a shame we as a group don’t do more to promote pool. We could sponsor players, give money to a promoter to run something called the AZ Members Open sponsored tournament for the pros, and a lot of other things.

We already have the group in place thanks to Mike and AZ. We could have letter campaigns to potential sponsors and TV stations to sponsor and put pool on their stations. Believe me 9000+ customers and their families from all over the world would get the attention of some sponsors.

I’m sure with all the members from all walks of life on here we could come up with something productive for pool. Johnnyt

TAP! TAP!! TAP!!!

i can see where u want to go, and i think we as a group can surely mean something in the poolworld.

but playing devils advocate:
-how many of those 9000 actually post more then 10times a year and arent spammers
- if u do open tournaments, will u be making one in belgium too? :D azb'ers come from all over the world. i think it will be hard to really get a tour or a yearly open.

now good things:
We could sponsor players: has been done (us open, etc)
give money to a promoter: has been done (youth competition)

but you are 20000% right about one thing. We could do more.

Mike H. has toyed with the idea of sponsoring a player in the past. Perhaps he can be nudged to reopen the issue.

9000 is not very many is most anything else, but in billiards that is not a bad start. AZB has my support.

Thats a great idea, I would love to go to somthing like that!

In leiu with the other post, I think we would be able (IF WE HAD ENOUGH SUPPORT FROM EVERYONE) to start a couple of different opens, like one in the US, one in Europe and so on. Do realize if it is a huge success, then soon enough we would be able to have multiple tournaments in the US as well as different countries. The main thing is support, if we pull it off good one time, it will be easier from then on out.

....my 2 cents.

How silly of me asking a pool player/ gambler for a little money. Four hits in 5 hours seems to tell the story.:D Johnnyt

If a quarter of the 9000 members donated $1, that would be $2250. Along with other sponsors and entry fee, it does not seem that it would be too tough to come up with enough money to run a decent tournament. Maybe not pro calliber tournaments right away, but at least some great regional tournaments open to anyone.

Good idea Johnny....

Other forums typically have an option where you can become an official member with more benefits and stuff like that anywhere from $20 to $50 a year......as a member, you get more PM space, can post pics, and so forth.....the member dollars could be used to sponsor tournies, players, or whatever....you vote, have a say in how your money is spent, and it's good for the site...

Again, not my idea, but it's something :D

why is that OUR resposibility.

1. need a cause such as support a young player or start a tournament.

2. For $10.00 Paypal contribution you get a cute little star next to your "rep"

I'd bite if the cause merited it.

How about area tournaments leading to a national tournament for players under 25. I would have qualified 40 years ago !

It is our responsibility because, when its all said and done, you are your brother's keeper.

We could form a pro players organization that is nonprofit, run by the members, with free membership, and strict guidlines limiting its mission. It could put up a website and sell merchandise to raise money and promote itself and pool in general.

IMO membership should be free and it should not be in the business of running tournaments or tours, or policing activies of the players, but instead represent the group of players as a whole to promoters, tournament directors and sponsors with the goals of increasing added money, decreasing entry fees and increasing tournament access to players.

I guess I'm saying instead of sponsoring a player or a tournament, sponsor an organization that works to make all of the tournaments we have already count toward something.

Im in for $25.00 from D&D Family Billiards for what ever you guys get going.

how about something for all the children you AZers have?

Im sure there just beaming with excitement everytime they have to be forced into a pool hall. There is so much variety for them to do.

Access to a computer with internet at a pool hall, or sponsoring someone to help them with their homework, a professional of some sort.

When I was dragged into a pool hall drinking, smoking and staring at a green table was no fun. Things I had on my mind back then were how am I going to show the teacher I am smart. What outbursts could I do to get some attention? And why are my parents giving me such a hard time?

Heck, I'd pay a $1 every month to sponsor tournaments all over the world...or players. You're right Johnny, there is power in numbers. :)

It would great to have tournaments all across the country. Where I am(Mn), there are some bigger tournaments, but not enough money to get the attention of players from other areas. Even if players within 5-6 hours would show up, it would make it the best tournament in the past few years. Most tournaments around have the same people and the best players usually cannot play, because they are on a pro list. Someone I talked to tonight said get people to donate $5 or so (give them something like VIP to any of the tournaments-maybe free entry?) and have the rooms bid too, and have 4-5 nice sized tournaments across the country. Look at Olathe and the number and calliber of the players. Not a real long drive, but would be nice to have a similar tournament once in a while, a little closer to home.

don't waste it on another tournament =_=

Before we get all excited, on any forum the number of registered users doesn't equal the number of active users. On a good day it looks like we might have 1,000 active users.

While 10 bucks from 1000 people would make a nice tournament, realistically we'd be lucky to get 300 to pay up. The result would be just another 4-figure-payout tournament.

If we want to do something for pool, it won't necessarily be financial... I think we could help pool with the force of a petition or for marketing something we think helps the sport or to prove there's an audience for a particular pool TV show. Or the money could go towards pool schooling, or towards high school/college programs, or even opening a new hall. One more 5,000-10,000 dollar tournament isn't going to change the world or improve pool much.

To help "pool" in general you need to help everyday players, not the people who are willing to pony up 100 - 1000 bucks to enter high level tournaments. That's like 1% of the players out there. We want to do something that benefits the OTHER 99% of the players out there.

Creedo has a point but the way to get pool more active is to start some thing that will keep it in the forefront. Some thing like regional tournaments for the up and coming young players. If we pony up $3,000 (per Creedo’s analysis) we might be able to buy X number of quality production cues as augmented by some industry people. These could be sent to several poolrooms who could use them as prizes for the young players.

A national tournament based on the regional tournaments with another $10.00 kicked in would get the kids talking and paying attention.

Some variation of an idea like this would increase the awareness of the sport among the young which would have long term benefits for the sport.

We would supply money, tournament guidelines, and perhaps get some people involved to donate time. What is needed is a ramrod with connections.

Once a young player wins a regional I would bet that some local AZers would back the travel etc and there could even be some friendly banter here on the board.
