You rock! Thx for the well wishes....yes, the chosen people love pool too

I knew there was a reason I was cooking the wife supper tonight.
I guess I will let her go to bed early and I will make a sacrifice and go shoot some.

Yes, Happy Hanukka everyone. Great day to remember all of G-d's miracles.

The Jews got this Christmas thing wired. Seven days to get gifts!
I should know too. I'm a card carrying member of the tribe.

It's 8 days Jay. LOL. I'm also a born member of the tribe, but I turned my card in a while ago. I spend most Sabbaths on the golf course.

Is this the right thread for this? Someone would be raising hell if it was a Christian thread! Chosen people my ass!

You know, I thought this thread and the OP was pretty funny, but I guess I was wrong, as someone has so astutely pointed out. Scrooge is alive and well!
All I can say is that if there is no room for humor on AZ, then we may as well all go home! Oh, we are home. Excuuussssse me!

AZB has lots of Humor, but some are too up tight to get it. We must first learn to laugh at the Guy in the Mirror, and Mel Brooks made fun of him self, his religion, than we after everyone else.

May we all have some great times with our families, give of our ourselves selflessly and oh yeah!, get some nice new cues, maybe a case or two and lots of table time :) I absolutely wish on the last one! I'll have to settle for my new cue by Christmas time!!! OY! Time to get a dreidel and gamble for some chocolate coins!

Cowboy, I'm not familiar with my Jewish holidays. Isn't that more like a BarkMitzah than a Hanukah picture?

HERE is a Little cue and PASTE!

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for eight days and nights. It starts on the 25th of the Jewish month of Kislev, which coincides with late November-late December on the secular calendar.

In Hebrew, the word “hanukkah” means “dedication.” The name reminds us that this holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E.

The Hanukkah Story

In 168 B.C.E. the Jewish Temple was seized by Syrian-Greek soldiers and dedicated to the worship of the god Zeus. This upset the Jewish people, but many were afraid to fight back for fear of reprisals. Then in 167 B.C.E. the Syrian-Greek emperor Antiochus made the observance of Judaism an offense punishable by death. He also ordered all Jews to worship Greek gods.

Jewish resistance began in the village of Modiin, near Jerusalem. Greek soldiers forcibly gathered the Jewish villages and told them to bow down to an idol, then eat the flesh of a pig – both practices that are forbidden to Jews. A Greek officer ordered Mattathias, a High Priest, to acquiesce to their demands, but Mattathias refused. When another villager stepped forward and offered to cooperate on Mattathias' behalf, the High Priest became outraged. He drew his sword and killed the villager, then turned on the Greek officer and killed him too. His five sons and the other villagers then attacked the remaining soldiers, killing all of them.

Mattathias and his family went into hiding in the mountains, where other Jews wishing to fight against the Greeks joined them. Eventually they succeeded in retaking their land from the Greeks. These rebels became known as the Maccabees, or Hasmoneans.

Once the Maccabees had regained control they returned to the Temple in Jerusalem. By this time it had been spiritually defiled by being used for the worship of foreign gods and also by practices such as sacrificing swine. Jewish troops were determined to purify the Temple by burning ritual oil in the Temple’s menorah for eight days. But to their dismay, they discovered that there was only one day's worth of oil left in the Temple. They lit the menorah anyway and to their surprise the small amount of oil lasted the full eight days.

This is the miracle of the Hanukkah oil that is celebrated every year when Jews light a special menorah known as a hanukkiyah for eight days. One candle is lit on the first night of Hanukkah, two on the second, and so on, until eight candles are lit. You can learn more about the hanukkiyah in the article: What Is a Hanukkiyah?
Significance of Hanukkah

According to Jewish law, Hanukkah is one of the less important Jewish holidays. However, Hanukkah has become much more popular in modern practice because of its proximity to Christmas.

Hahaha!

To be serious thought - You're probably referring to the kipah (headcovering or yarmulke) the dog is wearing & the tallit (the scarf). All men wear a kipah whenever they are in religious services or praying - and at hanukkah we do say prayers over the menorah, candles, etc. The tallit is a prayer shawl that boys receive at their bar mitzvahs at 13, woman at their bat mitzvahs at 12 or 13. It is a symbol of being an official part of the community.
I'm a conservative Jew (not orthodox) - some orthodox men wear the kipah 24/7 & wear tzittzit (kind of like a tallit) under their shirts at all times.

Hope that cleared it up!

Festival of Light, yeah right!

For the first night of Hannukah I had to get out of my house and go to a local bar for a beer and to shoot a little 8 ball.

The reason was that, here in CT, we had crazy weather all day featuring lots of rain and BIG wind. My street had two telephone poles knocked down to the ground by falling trees.

So for The Festival of Light, I had none for about 12 hours.

But not to be deterred, I lit some candles, put on my hat light and went to my rec room to hit some balls. But the hat light broke and so it was off to the bar.

I think I'll finish strong for the last seven days.

Happy Hannukah!

Best,
Brian kc

P.S. See, it's a pool related thread after all.

I am not anti-semitic, so this is purely an objective question that I ask every year around this time.

Why are there no Hanukkah movies?

The vast majority of the Xmas stuff on TV is written by, directed by, produced by or stars Jews.... and yet the Hanukkah story seems to be a perfectly adaptable story for screen, so why no movies?

It's a disconnect for me, and I hate disconnects.

Is it purely capitalism at work or is there some chosen rule against it?

I think there would be no audience for a Hanukkah movie, when you crunch the numbers. More Christians, than Jews.

But Question # II is if Jesus was born a Jew, and died a Jew and Never converted to Christianity in his life time, where did Christanity come from, and why do Christians worship a Jewish Carpenter?

Why not send your question to the major studios?
Happy Channukah.

I should know too. I'm a card carrying member of the tribe.

Then we still celebrate Christmas as well, just without the tree.
It's the best of both worlds.

Actually with my shiksa girlfriend we will have a tree.
