A crooked shaft or butt. Which is worse?

seventy-five cent question

OKay all you experts. Which is worse and why?

Thanks

Kevin

That is the seventy-five cent question. Since this is on the main forum instead of NPR I am going to assume we are talking about pool cues here. In my opinion a crooked shaft is worst because it may be going back and forth through the pivot point or it is nearer the pivot point. The further away the crook is from the pivot point the less effect it has. (here I mean the bridge, not the pivot points discussed in aiming threads) Another thing is that if you let it the outside of the bow on a wrapped cue butt will naturally turn down. It then is easily compensated for.

I often played with warped shafts too on house cues in the old days, some were ridiculously warped and played just fine turning the warp up and down. The ones that had multiple warps in different directions fairly close to the tip made things tough though, those I tried to dodge.

IMHO Hu is correct on the shaft being the bigger problem.....having said that I also can compensate for a crooked shaft by knowing which way to turn it. But I have a real problem if the butt has a warp that is more then a acceptable. I have a Palmer from the 70's that has a real good wobble in it and i can't get by it.:(

i compensate for a crooked shaft by using a different shaft/cue

A pleasure to come across some good old-fashioned logic

All I can say is shafts are much easier to replace, and if the cue is collectible the joint collar and the ferrule can be removed and used on the new shaft.

Take care

My girls like a bent shaft, in fact they would like it better if you could fold it in half!!!!!!

Go ahead and pick one, I will send her you way in the morning!!!!!!!! Because if she showed up at night it may be a little frightening!!:)

I would say the butt would be worse, You can always re-place a shaft but i would like to think its the but is really messed up you would need a whole new cue.

I have an older Joss that would roll pretty bad when it was togehter but the shaft and butt rolled fine till i found out the joint was lose so i had it fixed and no issue's from it ever since..
