A few things I learned on AZ

Sometimes I wonder if enough people chase a ghost, does that make it exist?

Okay, a little esoteric and creepy.

No one's talking about quitting. Fool! :D

We have Greg and Mark, Jay and Fatboy, Hopkin's and Grady, and untold hundreds of others, all trying to come up with a formula for success.
How can we miss ????

what about Mike?

Wondering what Mike Janis is up to too. He was close to ready to pull the trigger on something when he got banned.

I'm hoping that smiley means you're being a tad sarcastic?

You can easily miss. Without even knowing them we know that's the thing everyone's trying to be careful about.

Of course, I'm sorry, I don't like to even be less than clear on my bad attempts at sarcasm. :D

There's a local friend who uses that expression and my written word experiment failed. lol

Please excuse my snappy answer. If you look above my avatar you'll probably see I'm in the market for good news these days. I've run across a few of your posts tonight & they've actually managed to put a smile on my face. Not the easiest thing to do!

All the best.

Having put over 25 years into the promotion and directing of events, one thing i realized, pool players, myself included, are like a cancer. Continuously eating away at their favorite activity. If the tables were solid gold with sterling silver rails and 100% silk cloth, with thousands in added money, they could still find something to complain about.

We brought organization, standardized rules, deeper paybacks, low entry fees, and a code of conduct to hundreds of sites across the country.

We started small with 500 added events and over the span of a dozen years the added was up to 3500. On the way to more events and more added money.

Due to some bad decisions by our sponsors, caused in fact by pool players, we lost our title sponsor and survived a few more years scraping by with smaller companies.

And like Jay, we approached the BCA, with no luck, AND not only did they provide no help, they started their own tour in direct competition with their own members. This is the nature of the beast. Been seeing and fighting it for decades.

I know all you youngsters have no clue who we were, but take my word for it, we ran more pool tournaments and gave away more money to more players than anyone in the history of the sport, not counting the league extravaganzas.

Maybe if AZ was around while we were pounding the highway, we might still be in action. Who knows. I did my part.

Were you involved with John McChesney (sp?)

Bad news guys and gals. The pool players did have MANY opportunities over the years to get organized. And to have a pro tour! Guess what, they've ruined it for themselves each and every time. I was a witness to some huge miscalculations and some very bad decisions made by the players. Often times, it was listening to someone who was giving them very bad advice.

I do touch on these subjects, albeit briefly, in my upcoming book. I talk about Richie Florence who organized several 100K+ events in the early 1980's, and how he got shot down by a bad player decision. Who knows what he could have accomplished. I also discuss the Camel Pro Tour and the reign of Don Mackey. More lost opportunities. You may not be aware that I put on a $160,000 tournament in 1993 that most of the top players boycotted, thanks to a certain "commissioner". That was the last L.A. Open.

There were other opportunities that came there way as well, including the recent IPT. I don't know if the players could have done anything different where TruDough was involved. He answered to no one, not even his own conscience.

the first thing I learned....

most people would rather THINK they know how to play...

because actually learning is WAYYYYY to much work...

you can gain an opinion a lot faster than you can gain a skill...

That was the point - she is constantly telling people they shouldn't post because they are not pro's.

I have never stated on this forum that a member should not write on this forum unless they are a pro.

I believe this forum should be a place for pool folk of all kind, railbirds, social shooters, league players, industry members, pros, and tournament promoters. There is room for everyone here.

BTW, my posting on AzBilliards has nothing to do with my "date." My passion for pool existed long before I met Keith McCready, the "date" you refer to constantly when you try to belittle me.

If you think you're going to get in with the AzBilliards "In Crowd" by attacking me, it won't work. Some of the "In Crowd" have FINALLY been exposed for their true colors, just this past DCC. Word gets around! :D

Sorry, I should have said "other than himself." We know his stroke was tops.

Who does he like in regards to today's players?

Dave

I'm pretty sure he likes Jesse Bowman on the bar box.

On the big table, today's players, I am not sure who he would choose. He has a great deal of respect for Dennis Hatch's game. I'll ask him again when he rises and shines. He was up late last night, winning a mini online poker tournament. Cha-ching! :grin-square:

He has a website now, I think I read somewhere, but I can't remember the name of it.

I miss Mike Janis too. He was a victim of forum gang-banging by those who took every opportunity to take a potshot at him. He, in turn, retaliated in areas he probably should have left untouched, which resulted in him getting banned.

I like Mike Janis and appreciate his contributions to the sport! :)

...JAM...Why don't YOU learn to play pool, then come back and tell some of your own stories.

Uh, I do play pool, probably have played longer than you, but I don't play today anymore. I play a keyboard for a living today, full time, non-stop, and 24/7.

Now, for a JAM story playing pool. Here's a cute one.

Hank Dietle's Tavern in Rockville, MD, used to be a gathering place for all walks of life. Me, I used to be a member of the pool people, but we had our cast of regulars elsewhere in the bar.

The old-timers used to frequent the joint during the day, Sewer John, Fitz, and Laddie. They were in their sevenies or eighties. They'd meet up at Dietles and hang out in one booth that we fondly named "Cardiac Corner." They were all three, the best of friends. I will never forget when Laddie passed away. Sewer John and Fitz looked lost. Both of them died later the same year, all three of them passing so close together in time. It was kind of odd, but I used to like thinking that all three of them were sitting in Cardiac Corner in heaven having a good time yacking it up forever more! :(

Then there were the bar people who came in each day, ran a tab, and would drink their pitchers of beer. Dietle's only sold beer, no hard stuff. There were construction guys, Navy guys from Bethesda Navy Hospital, lawyers, lab technicians, firemen, and a lot of SES-ers from National Institutes of Health who used to take a walk on the wild side and hang out at the infamous Hank Dietle's. :grin-square:

Every day, I couldn't wait to get to Dietle's to see what was going on. It was like a clubhouse, and I knew everybody. I could drive by Dietle's and tell you who was inside by the cars in the parking lot! :o

I don't know why we pool people kept coming back. There was only one table in the whole place, a bar box. It cost 25 cents to play a game, and it was always 8-ball with a big cueball.

By night, Dietle's on the Pike was packed, and we had to start a list to play pool. Sometimes, because the list got so long, we'd play partner games. I was young and had not been playing pool a long time, and when it came time to pick a partner, I was often overlooked for the more experienced bar shooters. After all, we were playing for a buck each.

I can't tell you how many times I'd come up to Dietle's with $5 in my pocket, hoping to grind it up to 10 or 20 bucks on the pool table. In the words of Efren, sometimes I got lucky. ;)

One night, the place was hopping, and the list on the pool table had 20 or more. Everybody was playing partners to make it go by quicker. A stranger walked in the door, and he put a quarter on the table. Everybody jumped on him, "Put your name on the list. We're using the list," to which he complied.

He got himself a brewskie and sat alone, watching the action. His name was finally called. He asked a couple people to be his partner, and nobody wanted anything to do with the stranger, the poor fellow. Nobody wanted to risk a dollar playing with an unknown entity. Then he locked eyeballs with me, sitting there by myself. "Would you be my partner?" he said. I was so excited to be chosen as a partner, I jumped up and said yes. :p

I told him it's for a dollar or a beer, and he said that was okay. I only had a couple bucks in my pocket, and I was hoping for the best. He asked me if I wanted to break, and I said, "No. You break." He cracked the rack and ran out like a pro. WOW! I didn't even have to shoot, and I made a buck. The next challenged stepped up to the plate, racked the balls, and he broke 'em again. We won that game and the next and the next and the next. Soon, I was loaded with dollar bills. I liked this stranger a lot!

It turned out that the stranger was a top Maryland pool player from Randolph Billiards, and his name was Tom-Tom. We have been good friends ever since, 35 years later. :)

What Is Happening Elsewhere

Just spent 4 days watching Groups 3 and 4 - Championship League Snooker - the entry point to the Premier League.

A group is seven players playing a round robin over two days, 4 frame matches, 100 pounds for each rack won, 100 pounds for a century. Bottom two dropped. Fifth gets to come back to play in the next group. Top four play semi finals with money raised to 300 pounds. Final has a prize of 3000 pounds and entry to the Winners Group that plays for a spot on the Premier League.

The games are only on the web - free - no ads - no TV or cable - no live audience - just ref, camera crew and commentators. For the viewer, play is almost continuous for about 10 hours, with two tables to choose from.

As for organization in Snooker, it too has some deficiencies that need to be overcome.

Jay,
There is a little tournament here in nw Montana in a couple weeks. My understanding is there are 132 players (don't know how many women) (and many will travel a several hundred miles to attend in winter weather-one year it was about 16 below when I left). There are 4-5 guys planning and making all the arrangements with help --- these are just guys who love to play. One of their biggest problems is WHERE (there are no pool rooms). I know they started several months ago --- 'cause they called me in December. Its not easy to put it all together --- we have played at various places and different people over the years have been involved in making it happen. I enjoy playing 'cause there are some hard core players who love this game and enjoy the tournament (its forever on their calendar). And I expect to see Bigsky Jake playing:)

So I understand just a little of all that goes into the production for a big tournament with all the pros etc ---- its not easy man. As a player I appreciate all the work.

Oh yeah, I'll be there. I talked to Kevin and apparently they're going to try and stream it on the net

First off "in crowd" grow up. Date I refer to constantly????? 1 post is not constantly, but you can't seem to let it go.
And finally, the last post I responded to-last week YOU SAID.... LEAVE THE POOL FORUM TO THE PRO'S , I'D RATHER READ THEIR WORDS OF WISDOM THAN WANNABES WHO, BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION, CAN'T RUN THREE BALLS IN A ROW.So for the other three of you who gave me RED, she does this stuff constantly and there are alot of us that are sick of it. I guess it's wrong for me to tell her she is outta line but it's ok for her to constantly belittle people???????
Why do you keep mentioning Tom-Tom? We get it that you know him, so do I, so what's your point??? Has he even called you yet? I mentioned it to him last week.
And finally, I'm not trying to belittle you. Hopefully some day you will grow up and figure other people have a right to an opion without being attacked.
BTW I do enjoy some of your posts-just not the ones attacking people. I believe those are the only ones I have said anything negative about you.

He is not a victim of anything. A victim doesn't have a choice. Mike made his choices and the result of his choices got him banned. IMO.
